Getting this stained glass dome from first floor to ground floor in one piece...a delicate operation. Grade II house refurbishment.

Delighted to be starting work on the complete refurbishment of this Grade II Cotswolds rectory...see below for the design of the new palm-house inspired Garden Room.

Delighted to have photos of this recently completed pool house and pool from very happy clients who finished it just in time for our hot summer this year, a stunning job and some really great photographs. The job was in the grounds of a grade II listed farmhouse, the third phase of some quite tricky consent work we carried out with JPPC planning consultants and the building work by Richard Spence, pool by Clearwater Revival. Photographs Gareth I Jones.

A great pleasure today to help lead the Voysey Society around one of our projects, and to pay back the great man, in a small way, for the inspiration he has provided me over the years.

SPAB John Betjeman Award Winner!
Thrilled that the Death Reawakened Project at the Guild Chapel of the Holy Cross in Stratford upon Avon has been awarded this year's John Betjeman Award for outstanding repairs to the fabric of places of worship in England and Wales. The conservation work to the medieval wall paintings in the Chapel were carried out in 2016 alongside work to develop interpretation and a volunteer body at the Chapel to raise awareness. Hawkes Edwards were invo...lved for a long time beforehand as Chapel architects and had a key role, both in writing the successful HLF grant application, managing the project and coordinating the conservation work by Perry Lithgow Partnership. A great project and excited to be taking the next phases of work forward over the coming years!
Judges comments: “We were impressed not only by the extent and depth of recording and analysis underpinning the careful conservation of these amazing paintings, but also by the great skill with which it had been undertaken. The work was delicate and sensitive and executed to a faultless standard. As judges, we particularly noted the powerful results obtained just through the removal of damaging overpaint and coatings where possible, alongside gentle cleaning and stabilisation, without other interventions being made to increase legibility. The SPAB supports repair over restoration and champions a ‘light-touch’ minimalist approach to conservation and this was very much in evidence.”

Delighted that our Guild Chapel project has received a Commendation at the Historic England Angel Awards. An exciting project with more to follow in the coming years. Well done to the Hawkes Edwards team.

Yesterday morning we were privileged to meet the judges for the SPAB John Betjeman Award at the Guild Chapel, for which we are lucky enough to be on the shortlist. By amazing coincidence the BBC broadcast Neil MacGregor's episode of Shakespeare's Restless World in the afternoon, which included a description of the chapel and the paintings recorded in the building, just to hammer home how important these paintings really are. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01g61vf

New lights in the Guild Chapel and UV mesh on the windows.

Today a little visit to inspect All Saints in Leicester. A great church but nowadays redundant. It deserves a new use, wouldn’t it be fantastic if the community could find one.

Good news today: Consent granted for a new Garden Room and Pool extension to a Country House in Oxfordshire- hard won after schemes were refused for the architects before us.
