Lata Upadyaya has embarked upon a new project, and we are delighted that she is revisiting us on Saturday 25 August to let us become part of it!
An ordinary white Ford Transit van has been transformed; now enveloped in a graphic design that reflects the rich diversity of contemporary Britain and the communities living in Essex.
'Transit' brings together cultural signifiers from the two places that I have called home - the stereotype of the British 'White Van Man' first coine...d in the late 1990s, and South Asian truck art; vehicles decorated with elaborate patterns and calligraphy.
The installation represents the range of communities who live in Essex and the valuable contribution that immigration has made to British society.
The project has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, a Culture in Essex small grant award, Thurrock Council, Essex Cultural Diversity Project and Firstsite.

Tendring's coastal resorts played a key role in the establishment of the nostalgic 'British Seaside Holiday' since they became popular in the late Victorian Era. Discover the history of Tendring's unique seaside heritage with this exhibition looking at Jaywick Sands, Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, and Harwich and Dovercourt.
