“The true guide of life is to do what is right” – Winston Churchill. 54 years to this date Sir Winston Churchill passed away, aged 90. Under the plan ‘Operation Hope Not’ Churchill’s funeral was officially decreed by Queen Elizabeth II, to be a commemoration “on a scale befitting his position in history”. If you would like to read about Churchill’s connection and visits to Kenley Airfield, why not read this article: https://bit.ly/2DFqaUu

Christmas at war time
Christmas was still festive during WWII, Father Christmas would come and visit the children on Britian and present them with gifts as he would today. This picture is from a Christmas party in 1942, held at the Admiralty House for Allied naval officers' children, here Prime Minister Winston Churchill's grandson, Winston, recieves his gift.

Christmas at war time
There were many service men and women who came to Britain from overseas to support the war effort, an idea that was brought in was to have British families welcome these men and women for Christmas Day, allowing them to enjoy the festive cheer. Many lavish gifts were brought to the families as thanks which were greatly appreciated.

Wartime at Christmas This is a copy of the poster that was issued by the National Savings Committee during WWII, an encouragement to withdraw from spending too much during the Christmas period and use other ways to give gifts and celebrate. All in the attempt to get people to save and invest in the British war effort. https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o bject/33381

Christmas at war time
Many Christmas gifts and decorations were hand made during the war as there was a null of supplies, leaving few decorations being able to be bought in shops. Mostly made of paper or painted newspaper, things such as paper chains were hung throughout the British households in WWII.

Christmas at war time
For many families, the most difficult part of a wartime Christmas would be spending the festive season apart from loved ones. Many men were fighting abroad in the armed forces or were being held as prisoners of war. Women might also be away in the services or carrying out war work. Many children spent Christmas away from home as evacuees. By the end of the war, thousands of families had suffered the death of a family member either in action or from enemy bombing raids.

We just went to the family fun day and it was a lovely day. The kids all borrowed a bug finding kit and went out to find lots of little bugs to look at. Then they made some bird feeders and bee hives. It was a really great day and the kids loved getting up and close with nature. The people running it were so lovely and helpful.
