The charity creating healthier futures for children by inspiring a love of being active, in schools and communities with Park Kids and Marathon Kids.

The backstory…

Kids Run Free launched in 2010 by lifelong friends and competitive athletes Martine Verweij and Catherine O’Carroll. Already owners of Raceways CIC, a successful sport event management company, they went to lots of running events where children were watching the adults compete but couldn’t get involved themselves. They wanted to create opportunities that would inspire children to be active from an early age, and the rest as they say, is history!

How we make this happen?

Park Kids are free community running events for children and families, hosted around the UK in parks and green spaces. The hour long events kick off with fun warm up games, a series of races, an endurance lap challenge then finish off with rewards and a celebration – what a way to start the weekend!

The volunteer crew are dedicated and passionate about getting the children engaged with physical activity, but alongside this the social prescribing element is a very big thing. The events have a real community feel about them, where people are encouraged to come along and help, which not only benefits the children but has a positive affect on their own health and wellbeing – everyone’s a winner!

Marathon Kids is the free primary schools programme where children are encouraged to run /walk up to four marathons over the school year. It’s all about personal goal setting rather than competition, and inspires children of all fitness levels to set and reach their own goals.
Running a marathon is recognised by everyone as a huge achievement and it’s the perfect way to get the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity in school time.
