Lascaris - Malta Association

An Association with the sole aim of reuniting men and women who served the Crown in Malta G. C.

The association was started in 1989 by four RN Communicators and was originally called The Lascaris (Malta) Communicators Association.

Initially it was formed with the sole purpose of re-uniting Communicators who worked at the Commander in Chief Mediterranean Fleet's Communications Centre in Lascaris buildings, hence the name.

Staff were based in Camarata Barracks, H. M. S. 's Ricasoli, St. Angelo and Phoenicia as well as WRNS communicators living in Whitehall Mansions which now houses several embassies and the British High Commissioner.

It soon became obvious that no exclusively Naval Association existed for former Royal Naval personnel who had served in Malta. Recognizing this, the Association constitution was broadened to incorporate all personnel from all branches based ashore in Malta or serving on a ship based in Malta.

In 2002, the then Secretary of the Association, was contacted by men of the Army and Royal Air Force who had served in Lascaris but for which no equivalent Armed Forces Association existed.

After detailed discussion, based mainly on the concerns of the membership that the Association would lose its unique ‘Naval’ background, the constitution was again amended such that Associate Membership was extended to men and women of the other British armed forces and to civilians who had served the Crown in Malta.

The only limitation on Associate membership is that their number is restricted to 30% of the full membership but Associate Members have equal rights and privileges as those of Full Members.

The current active membership is around 200 who mainly live in the UK but members also live in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, Austria and Italy and yes, we even have one member living in Malta.
