The medal were instituted to record the successful conclusion to the First World War, but was later extended to cover the period 1919-20 and service in mine-clearing at sea as well as participation in various military operations in the following areas:- North Russia, South Russia, Siberia, the Eastern Baltic, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea.

Awarded for operational service in Belgium, France, The Netherlands and Germany from June 1944 to May 1945

The plaque was issued to the next of kin of those who lost their lives on active service during the First World War. At least 1,350,000 plaques were issued in total with significant premiums being applied to Female “SHE DIED” plaques as only 600 were issued compared to over 1,300,000 to male “HE DIED” plaques.
