IOSH Managing Occupational Health & Wellbeing - must-have training for managers and supervisors
Today, most companies address their #HealthandSafety risks without a second thought.
... And so they should, as: • danger signs are well documented and often easy to spot and audit; • there's a great deal of advice on how to correct oversights to adhere to guidelines and recommendations; • there's the incentive of #HSE coming down on them like a ton of bricks if their attention to detail is found lacking.
But while employees' mental health has no less potential to do harm (nor is identifying and accommodating it any LESS a legal requirement), managers tend not to pay similar attention to the health and #wellbeing of their workforce.
This ostrich theory towards employee health and wellbeing has got to change.
Labour Force Study Figures show that in 2017-18, 1.4 million UK workers suffered from a work-related ill health issue.
44% of those were assigned to stress, anxiety and depression.
These figures are such a concern - to employers, the economy and the sufferers themselves - that HSE is flexing its muscle, making sure all employers know their legal obligations.
To that end, we're starting to deliver the IOSH Managing Occupational Health & Wellbeing course from 11th March, 2019.
Ideal delegates are: • managers, • first line managers, • supervisors, and • team leaders.
Not only will the course help managers at work, but it has knock on effects of enhancing delegates' awareness beyond the confines of their employed role, too.
Full details and benefits of the course outlined here:

"Every child will learn basic first aid at school from 2020"
Damian Hinds was so blown away by American students' ability to give CPR (and his total lack of similar knowledge) that he's proposing to build basic first aid into the new health and education component of the curriculum.
Proposed new guidance suggests that by the end of secondary school pupils will be taught:... • how to administer #CPR, • the purpose of #defibrillators, and • basic treatments for common injuries.
Damian is not alone. Research by the British Heart Foundation suggests that only 1 in 20 UK adults would "be able, confident or willing to help in life-threatening emergencies," according to the Daily Mail's article (below).
If you are in the same boat as 95% of UK adults and think that your employer would support #FirstAid training - primary or emergency only - get them to give us a call.
Our 2019 training dates have now been released to our coordinators and will be on our website shortly. In the interim, contact training@mohs.co.uk for availability, price or just a brochure in the post/by email!
Have a safe 2019!!!

The HSE's #GoHomeHealthy campaign starts with this video.
The short video highlights some astonishing facts about #workplacehealth, both the physical and mental.
Employers have a duty to make sure that their employees are not only safe at work, but also that their work doesn't affect them after they 'clock off'.
... It is now a legal requirement. What's your [your employer's] #mentalhealth policy look like? Would it stand up to #HSE scrutiny?

With the government looking into the core of what #OccupationalHealth is - and we have been in communication with IFF Research and WHU relating our experience - #OHProviders need to communicate better the benefits to employers (and their staff) of implementing a workplace wellbeing programme.
Staff need to understand that undertaking OH screening is not a disguised witch hunt, seeking issues that their employer could use against them if it needs to make cuts.
Similarly, empl...oyers need to actively look for ways to extend their programme beyond the legal minimum (the basic cover of which is expanding into mental health at an acceptable rate thank to HSE 'sales' initiatives) and promote OH Providers as their partners in bringing "health to the healthless".
In the #BlackCountry, we are surrounded by heavy industry, incorporating both onsite workers and those who work offsite fitting the components local industry produces.
Many workers in this environment are men, often approaching middle age, whose lifestyle doesn't lend itself to going to their GP for regular check ups.
By involving occupational health as standard, manual workers, including skilled workers, are availed of foresight for early warning signs (lung, audio, vibration, skin and more) of potential serious illness. Promoting OH is a necessary, positive step all employers and their employees need to take.

Does how much you earn give you the right to get stressed and/or open up about it?
#WorkplaceHealth isn't just about keeping your physical self out of harm. Building a secure environment for your employees' minds is critical. Not just for #absenteeism, but for building your company's culture from within.
This succinct - if somewhat eyeopening - article HR Magazine identifies the telltale signs that the less you earn, the less likely you feel entitled to ask for help.
... Sometimes, you just can't leave your personal life at the door after you clock on.
Encouraging a culture of openness and having someone on site who can spot when someone's struggling is imperative today, and not just those in the C Suite.
A happy environment is built form the roots, up. Would you know if someone's struggling mentally in your organisation?

Keeping the aging #workforce active, happy and productive for longer:
**Age-related assessments**
To enable #older workers to function effectively, we need to understand how they work, both physiologically and psychologically.
... By ensuring that employers design roles/jobs to fit the employee — including their #physical and mental capabilities — age shouldn't be a barrier to continued working.
Our age-focused workplace assessments can make sure office environments are #ergonomically optimised to suit all workers, whatever their age: https://www.mohs.co.uk/…/health-and-saf ety-courses-asse…/er/
