Did you know over half the cells in your body are microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses rather than human cells? The way these organisms interact with us is not fully understood. A course of antibiotics may kill a huge proportion of your ‘friendly bacteria’. It is not know what long term impact this may have on your risk of developing allergies, autoimmune diseases or other conditions. This is one of the many reasons we use antibiotics only when they are really needed.

Dear Patients,
NHS England has launched a 12 week public consultation asking for people’s views on reducing prescriptions for medicines that can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. The consultation aims to seek the views of the public about medicines used to treat 33 minor or short-term health concerns. In the year prior to June 2017, the NHS spent approximately £569 million on prescriptions for medicines that can be purchased over the counter from pharmacie...s or supermarkets. These prescriptions include items for a condition:
· That is considered to be self-limiting and so does not need treatment as it will heal of its own accord · Which lends itself to self-care, meaning the person suffering does not normally need to seek medical care but may decide to seek help with symptom relief from a local pharmacy and use an over the counter medicine
NHS Walsall Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are supporting NHS England and are inviting Walsall residents to take part in the consultation, which ends on March 14, 2018. Vitamins/minerals and probiotics have also been included as items of low clinical effectiveness which are of high cost to the NHS. A list of the 33 minor or short-term health conditions can be viewed on NHS England’s website.
During the consultation NHS England will be hosting a number of events, including webinars for patients to attend. One of these events is due to take place on February 09 from 2pm – 4pm at Jurys Inn in Birmingham Visit www.events.england.nhs.uk/organiser/5695 to book a place or to see a full list of the events.
