Mainly to correct posture such as rounded mid back which is typically seen by desk employees sitting 8+ hours a day. • Another reason is to prevent upper body related injuries which may occur in the gym due to poor mobility and control. This exercise in particular engages mid and lower traps, which typically get neglected and don’t activate how they should with the majority of beginners in the gym.

What do our Barbell Club sessions look like?
Below is week one of our new 12 week training cycle, after testing our lifts last week, we have begun an accumulation phase, aimed at improving work capacity and developing a good general strength base!
- We use a combination of RPE and flexible repetition template, the RPE takes into account individual differences in reps performed at a particular percentage, and the flexible rep template allows customisation of the rep scheme to ...suit peoples individual level. Our beginners are encouraged to do more sets and less reps, while our intermediate lifters push the sets harder once they can maintain form under fatigue! Both groups will still achieve the same amount of working reps, which research shows is the most important factor when aiming to increase work capacity and muscle hypertrophy.
- We use variations of the Olympic lifts and various throws and jumps to develop speed and maximal speed, our Barbell club aims to develop multiple qualities rather than just Strength!
- Our exercises can be scaled up and down to meet your individual level, if you can’t currently Power Clean? We will introduce you to the high pull from the hip, and progress you from there!
- Think you need a step between what you are doing now and partaking in Barbell Club? We offer a small group 4 week Learn to lift course, three sessions a week to build your technique and confidence! If you are interested, enquire about our availability to start in September!

Good mirning everyone! Here is another weightlifting tip: Jerk Balance
If you trying to do the split jerk but you keeping your hips behind the bar or you overloading the front leg, try this drill.
Jerk balance will help you to practice the proper movement of the body under the bar during the split jerk.
... Set yourself to correct split jerk position with a bar in the jerk rack position (front foot: knee just above the ankle, back foot: toes slightly in, heel out and soften knee). Dip straight down, drive straight up and step the front foot while punching the bar over the head into a full split jerk position.
3-4 sets of 2-3 reps @ light to moderate weigh.

Since joining MSC my training has dramatically improve for the better.

The coaches are very experienced and knowledgeable.

Without doubt is the best gym in town. With excellent equipment and plenty of space to move around that you would never feel like a sardine stuck in a tin.

With the many squat racks you will never have to wait for an empty rack or barbell.

The great equipment that they have include eliko barbells, texas bars and powerlifting plates!

They have 2 sets of jerk blocks and 5 platforms! Am I in heaven or what!?

The atmosphere of the gym is brilliant. After having trained in a health club for years the best thing about MSC is that I have never felt intimidated but instead I feel supported and empowered.

I am so glad that I won't have to hear comments like I didn't know women could do that, becareful you don't want to hurt yourselves or omg you don't want to look manly!

The best thing is that I won't have to deal with bros who do bicep curls in the squat rack or take my equipment without asking because as I am a woman they assumed I ain't using it!

From the Crossfit Box in town to the local 24/7 gym there really is no comparison. The main difference here is the quality of coaches/owners. MSC Performance is a great gym if you're serious about training.



It's amazing that in a gym with so many bars and plates that so many people choose to train in groups. This is down to the atmosphere and sense of community at the gym. It is unlike any other gym I've trained at and I can attribute lots of PBs to the encouragement I have received from members of the gym.



Not only is there a huge community at MSC, but the people that make up the community are great. The coaches are all well experienced and very good at their jobs, with a long list of credentials; and many of the members are accomplished athletes. This makes it so much easier to improve in whatever you're into.



If you're new to lifting weights then the gym runs Learn to Lift an Barbell to teach and programme weightlifting/powerlifting basics into your routine. There are also many other classes for people of all ability. The gym is great not only for serious and advanced athletes, but also for complete beginners and everyone in between.

I’ve been a member of MSC Performance for around 6 months and it’s been the best discussion I’ve made in terms of my health and fitness.



The facility is by far the best in Birmingham. The investment in equipment to allow a whole host of training options is brilliant. All of the staff are extremely approachable and knowledgable. Always on hand and willing to offer a little advice on your lifts or a conditioning exercise to help progress your training.



MSC also offers a number of class training option every day. I haven’t got involved in these yet, but I’m looking forward to.

Unlike many commercial gyms,everyone in the gym is friendly and supportive of your own individual goals, many of us training together throughout the week.



MSC Performance has an amazing community of lifters across all abilities from those who have never picked up a barbell to International level competitors.



Since joining in October 2015 I have competed in my first power-lifting competition. We urge each other on in our training and support each other at competitions.



The facilities are top notch with 5 lifting platforms and 3 power racks along with enough plates for everyone. Classes are available throughout the week with more individual sessions also available.

There is a vast range of classes to suit all abilities and interests and having taken part in both the Met Con class and Strongman class I can vouch that these are far better than any other class you would attend at a commercial gym. As well as this you can also take part in weightlifting and powerlifting classes both coached by top althetes who know their stuff!



This gym offers great equipment and facilities and provides an amazing training atmosphere with all members encouraging each other all the way. There isn't a reason not to train at MSC so take a trip down and give it a go!

I've been at msc for a month or so and Ive figured that there's a number of things that make it such a fantastic place to train.

I've done boot camps, commercial gyms, running clubs, boxing gym.... each having something specific to offer, however now at msc I find I'm getting everything I could possibly need to get what I've always wanted out of training.

There's an amazing team of coaches. Each different with a great range of experiences and teachings. Extremely knowledgable, friendly and really supportive and encouraging.

The range of training available, its in the name Mobility, Strength and Conditioning, too often I've seen pt's almost brush off the mobility side, losing the important balance of what your body needs to get the best out of it.

The equipment, everything you need to challenge yourself, try new things and enjoy it at the same time.

And of course each of the other members that train there, a variety of people, from different backgrounds, of all shapes and sizes but everyone with the same determined mindset. An absolute fabulous mix of likeminded friendly and encouraging people which gives you an incentive to push harder. The more experienced members, those who compete in competitions giving their support to newer members, which makes you feel valued no matter what level you are at.

All of things come together to create one of best places I've ever joined. If you're serious about training yourself. For whatever goals and want to learn the right way to become stronger, fitter and faster, then check MSC out!

I was introduced to this gym last year through work, and loved my experience! It is a great gym space and has a great atmosphere, equipment and outstanding coaches (understatement) that treat each member as an individual. Before MSC I was training at different gyms across Birmingham. However, I soon hit a plateau in my training life; it became dull and boring. I was not pushing myself, my interest waned and I was not seeing results. I needed help but initially wasn’t sure how to go about it, but after some ‘research’, off to MSC I went!



It has been two months since I’ve become a member of MSC. Since then I have made a conscious effort to throw myself into the Barbell club and Metcon classes. My form has improved, I’m lifting heavier weights, I’m leaner, and I’m learning and developing under the guidance of knowledgeable coaches, and members at the gym. I never thought I’d experience ‘withdrawals’ from a gym when I’m not there!



The atmosphere and the sense of community stands out for me. Coaches and members are constantly encouraging me to surpass my potential, to work hard and stay humble, and most of all enjoy the journey. There is a mix of men, women and different age groups all working to achieve their goals.

I can't recommend MSC highly enough! Gym life for me before MSC was pretty dull, pounding the treadmill without seeing much in the way of results. I knew in the back of my mind I needed to be doing some strength and conditioning work but that 'area' of the gym always seemed pretty unwelcoming, and I felt like I didn't have a clue where to start.



Since joining MSC I am regularly taking part in the metabolic conditioning classes and have learnt so much about my own fitness and how to build strength work into my routine. It's taken a while to get my head round the fact that lifting heavy weights and becoming stronger would actually make me leaner! I also LOVE the Friday morning strongman classes - I never thought I would enjoy flipping a tractor tyre before going to work but it turns out that I really do!



The atmosphere at MSC is brilliant, very supportive with coaches who really know their stuff. There is a very even mix of men and women - and these women are giving the guys a run for their money with their strength which is great to see and be part of.



Come down to MSC and listen to someone who knows what they're talking about!

Great gym, with highly trained staff, a supportive atmosphere and all equipment needed for a perfect workout. Great for individual workouts as well as group exercises (I highly recommend Metcon). The guys working there are all very skilled, always ready to help and answer questions, come up with new exercises and encourage improvement. Additionally, the people training there build a community that is fun to train with. It is a clean gym with all facilities needed (changing room, lockers, showers).

Finally found the perfect gym for me! A lot of functional equipment great for sports performance, awesome coaches and great people. I've enjoyed attending the workout sessions such as Metcon which are run several times a week by the knowledgeable coaches. Our S&C sessions have had a great impact on the field for my sport and I've noticed gains in fitness and strength in just a few weeks.

Being a member of my own local gym which is part of a leisure complex of a hotel, it was a bit daunting at first to see such a hard core gym! But i need not of been apprehensive, the gym is very well equipped and straight away when you walk in your mind is set and focused. Being more of the mature age group, again, I was concerned I may be a bit out of my depth but again I was made to feel very comfortable being there. I have achieved so much in just six weeks and I would not have got this far if it wasn't for my PT Richard who has encouraged me and guided me all the way. Thanks to all at MSC Performance.

I never thought I’d experience ‘withdrawals’ from a gym when I’m not there!



The atmosphere and the sense of community stands out for me. Coaches and members are constantly encouraging me to surpass my potential, to work hard and stay humble, and most of all enjoy the journey. There is a mix of men, women and different age groups all working to achieve their goals.



I’d encourage everyone to join MSC, no matter where you are on your fitness journey. MSC for me, has definitely made training a pleasure! The best decision I’ve made �

I can't recommend MSC highly enough! Gym life for me before MSC was pretty dull, pounding the treadmill without seeing much in the way of results. I knew in the back of my mind I needed to be doing some strength and conditioning work but that 'area' of the gym always seemed pretty unwelcoming, and I felt like I didn't have a clue where to start.



Since joining MSC I am regularly taking part in the metabolic conditioning classes and have learnt so much about my own fitness and how to build strength work into my routine. It's taken a while to get my head round the fact that lifting heavy weights and becoming stronger would actually make me leaner! I also LOVE the Friday morning strongman classes - I never thought I would enjoy flipping a tractor tyre before going to work but it turns out that I really do!



The atmosphere at MSC is brilliant, very supportive with coaches who really know their stuff. There is a very even mix of men and women - and these women are giving the guys a run for their money with their strength which is great to see and be part of.



Come down to MSC and listen to someone who knows what they're talking about!

Great gym, with highly trained staff, a supportive atmosphere and all equipment needed for a perfect workout. Great for individual workouts as well as group exercises (I highly recommend Metcon). The guys working there are all very skilled, always ready to help and answer questions, come up with new exercises and encourage improvement. Additionally, the people training there build a community that is fun to train with. It is a clean gym with all facilities needed (changing room, lockers, showers).

Finally found the perfect gym for me! A lot of functional equipment great for sports performance, awesome coaches and great people. I've enjoyed attending the workout sessions such as Metcon which are run several times a week by the knowledgeable coaches. Our S&C sessions have had a great impact on the field for my sport and I've noticed gains in fitness and strength in just a few weeks.

Being a member of my own local gym which is part of a leisure complex of a hotel, it was a bit daunting at first to see such a hard core gym! But i need not of been apprehensive, the gym is very well equipped and straight away when you walk in your mind is set and focused. Being more of the mature age group, again, I was concerned I may be a bit out of my depth but again I was made to feel very comfortable being there. I have achieved so much in just six weeks and I would not have got this far if it wasn't for my PT Richard who has encouraged me and guided me all the way. Thanks to all at MSC Performance.
