April has been a short month but jam packed with events, including the Holland Trip, the Lichfield Cathedral Trip, the Y10/12 Careers Event, Y8 achieving Reading Masterclass status, and the spelling bee!
There is also great work in English, Humanities, Art, Media Studies and Drama!

The next MFL Film Club showing is Sophie Scholl (German) on Tuesday 14th May 3.15 – 5.20 in Lecture Theatre. Sophie Scholl is the true story of Germany's most famous anti-Nazi heroine brought to life. Sophie Scholl is the fearless activist of the underground student resistance group, The White Rose. Using historical records of her incarceration, the film re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence in 1943 Munich. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to her comrades, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

Students in Y10 and Sixth Form had the chance to attend a careers event at the Wolverhampton Racecourse where they saw a variety of interesting careers on offer, as well as having a lot of fun with the interactive exhibits. Many thanks to the City of Wolverhampton College for their organisation of this event!

On the last week of term 30 students from the academy visited Holland to take part in a Masterclass Football Competition.
On Monday 8th April, in the early hours of the morning, students began their journey via coach to Valkenberg, for OSWBA’s 2019 Sports Tour. On the first full day of the sports tour, students participated in a 90 minute training session led by professional Dutch coaches, where they looked at a range of different tactics and strategies that could be implemen...ted into our evening games against local opposition.
On the evening our girls team (captained by Jamie Lee Mansell) drew 0-0 to LHC Girls, and our Boys team (captained by Jordan Kaye) unfortunately lost to 4-1 to RKVVL Polaris, however both teams performed and conducted themselves brilliantly.
The second full day of tour included more training sessions and matches against local opposition. Students and staff also got the opportunity to explore the local town of Valkenberg during the afternoon and participate in a school bowling competition.
During the evening the girls team travelled to RKHSV...where they lost 2-0 and the boys team played KVC Oranje, and also lost 5-1. Despite this, it was again a great experience for both teams. During the final day in Holland we all visited PSV Eindhoven Football Stadium where students had a full guided tour of the pitch, executive stands, trophy and press room and club shop, which was another awesome experience for all involved.
The Boys teams participated in a football tournament on the afternoon against other English schools, winning one game and losing two. Nedas was the player of the tournament and Captain Jordan Kaye received a staff voted leadership award for his role as captain throughout the whole tour.
Mr Lawley and all the staff who attended the tour just want to thank and highlight how outstanding all the students were throughout the trip. All students were a credit to the academy and represented the school in a perfect manner!

A massive congratulations to Miss Dhillon's students in 8X1 who are now a MASTERCLASS for Accelerated Reader. This means that as a class they have met the following criteria from Renaissance (an international company!):
• Average engaged reading time of over 25 minutes • 90% or more students achieved over 85% average % correct on their quizzes • 80% of points earned are from independent reading
... All students in 8X1 take part in structured guided reading lessons on a weekly basis in addition to engaging with their reading independently every day. All this monumental effort means that they have featured on the Renaissance Honour roll 2018-19 and received their certificates and prizes in assembly last week.
Speak to your English teacher or Miss Kelly in the library to find out how you can also aim achieve this honourable status!
