I spent yesterday afternoon talking to pupils about my story of becoming a physiotherapist. I love my job and feel very honoured to be able to help people on a day to day basis. I genuinely believe it’s a great career to pursue. If anyone has a family member who wants to be a physio and isn’t sure how. I’m always happy to spend some time helping them get to that goal.

A PAIN IN THE NECK? • • • •
... A high proportion of people suffer from neck pain. The neck supports the weight of the head which makes it susceptible to injury. Pain can be related to poor posture, a neck strain, previous whiplash injury or occupational activities. It can be a main cause of headaches and hugely debilitating (I can empathise!)
The above factors can all be compounded by age related wear and tear and a condition referred to as ‘cervical spondylosis’. Degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs, osteophyte formation and a restriction of the soft tissues around the neck can lead to pain and stiffness.
✅ For desk workers a well set up work station is crucial. Check the height of your monitor, desk and chair. There are also products on the market such as sit-stand desks and lumbar supports that may benefit you.
✅ Avoid the ‘poking chin’ position as seen in the video
✅ Exercises are found to be helpful. Complete these exercises 5 times with a 15-20 second hold twice per day
Acupuncture, soft tissue treatments and joint mobilisations in combination with exercises such as these are found to have clinically important changes in subacute and chronic neck pain (Miller et al 2010) so get in touch for a complete treatment approach for your neck pain. #helpingeverydaypeoplewitheverydaypain #physio #shrewsbury #physiotherapist

Phil came to me with severe lower back pain with referral into his left leg and foot. He reported a situation over the weekend when his back ‘went’ whilst lifting. He couldn’t lie flat, he couldn’t sit/stand or sleep. His movement was drastically reduced and pain levels were high- 10/10.
What did we do? ... ✅ Behaviour modification: ⁃ Comfortable resting positions ⁃ Reducing aggravating factors
✅ A review with the GP for appropriate medication
✅ Gentle mobility exercises
✅ Acupuncture/soft tissue massage/joint mobilisations
✅ Strengthening exercises
He was referred for a scan confirming a disc herniation with nerve root compression.
Phil has made an excellent recovery without surgery. He’s back on his bike, feeling strong and healthy.
Data from clinical trials suggest patients who have herniated discs have similar long term outcomes with conservative management when compared with surgery
Hong J & Ball PA- Resolution of lumbar disc herniation without surgery. N Engl J med 2016
The moral of the story- it’s all about the process. Things take time. Surgery can not be discounted, but you have a window of opportunity to improve the situation with conservative management - get the basics right and never give up.
