About Samurai Judo Club

We are a non-profit making club with around 150 members, male & female, ages of active players ranging from 6 to 66. We cater for all levels and interest.

Samurai Judo Club Description

The Samurai judo club was formed in 1979 by Andrew Haffner - then only 19 years old - as a club dedicated to the pursuit of improvement. The philosophy behind the club was and remains to strive to be as good as you can, and be aware of all aspects of judo as well as just the competitive side. Although the club's competitive section has attracted the most publicity, the other fields in which the club is involved such as Kata, Refereeing and general technique remain very important.

In 2012 the club finally achieved their dream of building their own premises (final cost around £1 /3 million) which now provides them not only with a purpose built facility but a home they own. Now the club can focus totally on supporting and developing their players at all levels, from the once-a-week recreational types to those competing in events all over the country and Europe and occasionally beyond.

The club is run by a Chief Coach (still Andrew Haffner) and committee, who are elected at an AGM to which all members and parents of junior members are invited. No club official or coach is paid, all are voluntary and all money received goes towards club expenses and activities. Accounts are presented at the AGM. Committee members and coaches names and phone numbers are on the notice boards and they may always be approached for help or advice. ALL NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME - the more the merrier.

Very good well run club, well done Andrew.

This was the first time I have ever trained judo. The facilities at the club are really impressive and clean. I trained in the parents session which was mixed ability. Everyone made me feel welcome, helped and advised me. I was really impressed with the instructors, the class ran alongside a juniors class so that you can train at the same time as your children if you want. I will definitely be returning, it was a great workout and very enjoyable.

User

Lovely club - thank you Andrew and all coaches for the support and encouragement given to Leah - she is so privileged to belong to such a lovely club

I managed to get down to Samurai Judo Club at the weekend for their 35 years anniversary. I can honestly say how amazed I was to see what the club has achieved. Its been 20 years since I walked through the doors of Samurai Judo Club and it was great to see so many familiar faces still doing a bit of judo. Both myself and by sons received such a warm welcome from the club, we felt very privileged to be a part of the story and the day. Samurai has always been a great club, but its come a long way since the days of Plimsoll Street to the facilities they have today - its an amazing club and Andrew Haffner and Co should be proud!!!
