A very big thank you to all who helped with the Big Clean at St. Stephen’s this afternoon. It’s made a huge difference and the church feels even more loved and cherished! If you missed this Big Clean then the next one is scheduled for the 4th July 2019 - tea, coffee, cake, biscuits and good company provided.

Sunday 7th April, 4.00pm - St. John the Baptist - Claines. Three candidates from St. Stephen’s are also among those to be confirmed by Bishop John this coming Sunday. It would be really wonderful if as many as possible could be there to support them. As an extra incentive, the service will include a Commissioning of St. Stephen’s, Claines and St. George’s to mark the importance that is being given to work undertaken with children, young people and families.

Why are the Crosses in St Stephen’s veiled during Lent?
If you visit St Stephen’s from now until Easter (the season of “Lent”), you cannot fail to notice that the crosses, crucifixes, statues and some other images have been covered with purple cloth. Why do we do this?
‘Veiling’ as it’s called is an ancient tradition, although some churches do it only towards the end of Lent.
... It’s a stark visual reminder that all the glory in our faith – which we represent through these crucifixes and images – comes only because of what Christ suffered for us.
It’s also a way of simplifying things so that our attention is especially focused on Jesus during these weeks. This reflects the way many people give things up during Lent, ideally to make space for a greater focus on God.
And it also creates a sense of anticipation. We want the veils to be removed, and that reminds us of the glory which God has in store for us, which we long for. As Saint Paul said, “Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.” (1 Corinthians 13:12)
The veils will be dramatically removed for Easter, as we celebrate with joy the Resurrection of Jesus, and the hope he brings.
