Buckets and spades at the ready! English Heritage has just launched a country-wide competition to build the ultimate sandcastle, in celebration of the 66 castles in its care.
Find out how to enter the competition, or get some inspiration from the sandcastle experts! The charity has just created this magnificent sandy stronghold at Dover Castle — using real castle building techniques: http://bit.ly/lovecastles

A new English Heritage survey has revealed that children's earliest memories of castles are more likely to have come from fantasy, film and fiction, instead of a real-life visit. Time to reverse the trend! http://bit.ly/2KT7IYT

Yesterday was me and my wife's first whole day out together for a while so we decided to have a day out and we weren't disappointed! Such a beautiful picturesque place with gorgeous weather to boot!! All the staff were friendly and really helpful.

User

Well worth a visit. We happened to pick a very sunny day. Very good sandwiches and toasties from little cafe. Plenty of picnic tables. Great views from top of tower. There is a free audio guide.

User

Very old really enjoyed looking around well preserved the original fireplace still there

User

Unfortunately we didn't get chance to see the castle as our 2 year old ate a wasp in the picnic area of the car park! However, the staff I spoke to to get help were absolutely fantastic and arranged medical help for him. I can't thank them enough for helping us out when his mouth was swelling up and keeping me calm!! Hopefully we'll get chance to come back and see the castle next time!

User

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit, captivated by the beauty of the castle and its surrounding scenery. Despite being very busy on the day we visited, I was more than happy with the welcome we received from Staff. Found the whole experience well worth the admission fee. The audio facility really added to the atmosphere as I was guided through the rooms. Amazing historical facts related in such a way that I felt transported back in time. Finished the way with a trip to the tea room, again met my friendly and helpful Staff. Good very, very good and reasonably. Highly recommend a visit. Thank you to all Staff.

User

This is a beautiful fortified Manor House with gorgeous landscapes and scenery.

Enchanting and magical. Peaceful and harmonious.

User

Love to visit whenever we come down here. Very relaxing and peaceful. Love the "grafitti" from people decades ago, hidden here and there. The church is also lovley to visit. Managed to catch an evening play(Aug24) in the grounds, was brilliant.

User

I'd never heard of the castle but visited after a recommendation from someone and so glad I went! Amazing place, one of the best historical places I've been too (which is a lot!) beautiful place in stunning surroundings, fascinating piece of history and very helpful, friendly staff, highly recommend!

User

I am so glad that the castle is being renovated. It is set amongst beautiful countryside. Although a little on the expensive side I found it to be charming. You also had the option of free audio info which I found invaluable. A must visit if you are in the area. We went at the end of the day about 4pm, it closed at 6pm, at that time of day there were only a few people there which was nice as we could see everything clearly without having to move around people. The little cafe served cakes, drinks hot and cold, with seating in the courtyard which was very relaxing. All In all very enjoyable.

User

Had a lovely day yesterday. Food really nice in the little tea room and not bad price. They had a event going on which was really fun. Went expecting to stay an hour or 2 stayed all day.

User

First time visiting here, found it by accident when driving for work, and suggested it to the family, took the in-laws as part of fathers day too, was glorious sunshine and really peaceful relaxing environment with a real insight into the history of the area well worth visiting.

User

Fantastic! Came to the Courtly combat, archery and dancing. Great history, displays and vibe. Was not expecting the Knights to fight that hard! They didn't pull any 'punches' (Mace, sword and axe swings). Family loved it. Thank you.

User

Beautiful place for a visit and so well preserved. One of the EH sites that has the Audio Tour so you can go round at your own pace. Perfect afternoon out.

Great little coffee shop with indoor or outdoor seating too

User

Absolutely beautiful place. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and the gardens were beautiful. Also had the pleasure of watching the nesting swallows feeding their chicks in the rafters of one of the rooms. Lovely little tea room on site where we sat outside watching the birds. Don't forget to visit the little church next door too. Very enjoyable day out.

User

A great place to visit great location and view from the top of the tower the audio guide is good helps you get more from the visit. The staff were very friendly and helpfull

User

1st off I want to commend the staff that works here, from the folks walking around, the ticket sales in the gift shop and the upper tea room.....alll are cheerful and enjoy working there.

Sure this is a smaller historical site but is a awesome historic visit for all ages and not much long walks.

The parking lot has covered lunch benches with a new food 'house' located.

For young children this is the perfect small castle with even a couple of games for them.

User

Why have I never been here? After all I only live down the road!! First time English Heritage Members so this was our first place to visit!

Very interesting with lots of nooks & cranies, towers to climb & rooms to sit in & let your imagination go wild! What it must of been like to of lived here....probably very cold like it was when we visited!!

Lovely little tea room serving soup, sandwiches, cakes etc but I can see why a new tea room is being built......this will be a great asset!!

Don't forget to visit the Church...very peaceful!!

User

It's a lovely place to visit, and there were activities on that entertained my 11 year old. however I should have realised it was no place for a pram. I couldn't even get through the door without help and you can forget looking elsewhere.

however it was a pleasant day and I had a lovely hour on the bench while my daughter played and my husband took my toddler up the tower part.

I will visit again but bring the baby sling next time.

User

An excellent visit. Stokesay Castle is set amongst the beautiful hills of south Shropshire and, although there are no furnished rooms, the castle is brought to life in an interesting, free audio tour. We also enjoyed visiting the church and wandering around the graveyard and castle grounds. The staff were very friendly and helpful and our lunch was delicious and presented in an appetising way.
