A member of the public found these bones yesterday in Brookside. The Brookside Safer Neighbourhood Team were quickly on the scene. Fortunately they have been confirmed as not being human, or dinosaur as one young resident had suggested! 1378

Cops make Jurassic effort for charity
Police officers, support staff and supporters from across the country were locked up in jail last night (Jan 31st) ... all in the name of charity.
The LockUpLockIn event was held in the old Victorian custody suite at Steelhouse Lane Police Station in Birmingham to raise money for the Care of Police Survivors organisation, a charity that supports families of police officers who have died in the line of duty, and the West Midlands Police He...ritage project to convert the cell block into a new police museum.
Safer Neighbourhood Officer for Newport, PC Lee Thomas, and his 17 year old daughter Chloe, a sixth form student at Newport Girls High School NGHS Sixth Form, joined in the fun and also added their own slice of entertainment for the event, in the form of a dinosaur race against two officers from the Metropolitan Police in London and a member of the team behind the popular UK Cop Humour social media site.
PC Thomas said “I’ve supported the work of Care of Police Survivors for a number of years through my own work on social media, but the Dinosaur Race idea was all down to Chloe and one of the main event organisers, Julia Berry”
“It didn’t take much persuading on Chloe’s behalf to rope in a few other willing participants from the world of policing social media to create what we hope was a highlight of the evenings entertainment that saw five brightly coloured tyrannosaurus rex’s running around the basement level of the cell block.”
“The whole thing was streamed live on social media so that people who couldn’t make the event could join in the fun. Unfortunately we were not able to stay the whole night but about 40 others bedded themselves down for a taste of jail life from the Victorian era”
He added “The main point of the night of course was to raise as much money as possible for charity and I’m very proud of Chloe whose own efforts have raised a massive £430 in just a couple of days, towards the current running total for the whole event of £8,811“
PC Thomas wasn’t the only West Mercia Police officer taking part in the event; also doing his part to help raise money for charity was Custody Sergeant Billy Keys from Worcester Police Station who has raised an amazing £745.
Another highlight of the evening for everyone who took part was a visit from PC Dave Wardell and retired Police Dog Finn.
Finn became a worldwide celebrity after being stabbed and critically injured protecting PC Wardell when he was attacked in Hertfordshire in October 2016 while searching for an armed suspect.
Finn required major surgery to save his life but went on to make a full recovery, and as a result of PC Wardell’s subsequent campaigning, ‘Finns Law’ became law in 2019 making it a specific offence to harm a service animal.

Off road bike rider fined after being caught in Newport
An 18 year old man from Walton Road, Wednesbury, in the West Midlands pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrates in Worcester on 9 January following the incident which occurred in Newport on the 30 June 2019.
Brad Edwards was located on Shuker Close by members of Newport and Donnington Safer Neighbourhood Teams after complaints from local residents about a green and white Kawasaki off road motorbike being ridden ...around the town.
Officers seized the bike under powers given them to deal with vehicles being ridden on public roads without insurance.
PC Lee Thomas from the Newport team said: “Over the summer, we had received a number of complaints of anti-social behaviour by youths on off road and pit bikes riding around Newport.
“With the help of colleagues from the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Donnington we pooled a lot of resources into addressing the issue and this outcome is just one part of the success we were able to achieve.
“It’s worthy of note that after this bike was seized, word clearly got around very quickly and instances of similar activity dropped off overnight.
“I would like to thank the members of the public who came forward with CCTV footage of the offences which was instrumental in us being able to get this matter before the courts.”
Edwards was fined £350 for riding without insurance, £116 for not displaying L plates, a total of £85 costs, given 6 penalty points, and his motorbike was scrapped.

ROADWORKS – CHESTER ROAD / DEER PARK DRIVE, NEWPORT
Please note that roadworks will commence on 27th January along Chester Road, Newport, around its junction with Deer Park Drive. The roadworks are planned to last for 3 weeks.
The purpose of these works is to install road safety measures on the approach to Deer Park Drive and St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School. These improvements are being carried out after many requests and campaigning by local residents / councillors.
... We understand that the works will include:
🔴 The installation of a new pedestrian refuge with dropped kerbs and extended footpath to the south (town side) of Deer Park Drive
🔴 Speed cushions both sides of the Deer Park Drive junction
🔴 A ‘school safety zone’ with signage, warning lights and an advisory 20mph speed limit
🔴 A 40mph ‘buffer zone’ from the point where the existing 30mph / national speed limit signs are north of Deer Park Drive for a length of 425 metres towards the A41 bypass
🔴 The installation of ‘School No Stopping’ yellow zig zags on part of Coppice Drive, directly outside the school.
The area of the roadworks will be controlled by temporary traffic lights but there may be times during these works when access to Deer Park Drive & estate, the school and the A41 bypass may be subject to delays from the town side (and likewise, traffic heading into town from the A41 along Chester Road may also be subject to delays).
Drivers may prefer to enter/exit the town via Stafford Road and its junction with the A41 bypass rather than using Forton Road which could also become congested at busy times.
Parents and carers taking children to / collecting from St Peter and St Paul RC Primary school are advised to walk or cycle during the period of works where possible. If car journeys are necessary, we strongly recommend drivers use the parking facilities made available at Newport Rugby Club on Forton Road and walk through to Deer Park Drive from there.
Further information about these roadworks is available by visiting the Telford & Wrekin Council website at www.telford.gov.uk/traffic and clicking on the link that says ‘Chetwynd Road, Newport’
