What a night! We were Highly Commended at this year's IOW Business Awards run by the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce. It was a glittering affair and a big round of applause to all of the winners. You all help our Island be a great place to live 👏

Tomorrow is the big day - the 2019 Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for Excellence. We are proud to have been nominated for the Business in the Community Award: https://www.iwchamber.co.uk/…/iw-chambe r-business-awards-2…/
We are taking the opportunity to tell you about one last thing we do to support the community... our Local Flavours range. If you have bought any of the 350 local products stocked across our IOW stores then you have supported a producer on the Isle of Wight. Thank you.
But did you know it was first launched on the Isle of Wight? It is our way of supporting some of the amazing local food and drink producers on the Island - nearly 30 in total! They produce everything from milk, eggs and yoghurt to ales, cakes and biltong. Yummy! 🤤🧀🍅

A brand new product is launching in our sister stores on Monday - Isle of Wight Milk! We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is a success as it will then be rolled out in our store. It is all about fair pay and helping dairy farming on the Island to keep going 🐮

Ahead of The 2019 Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for Excellence (where we have been nominated for Business in the Community Award), we wanted to shout about our amazing colleagues!
Our colleagues here and at our sister stores on the Isle of Wight, gave up 67 hours for volunteering and 70 hours for community engagement in 2018/19. This only accounts for the ones we know about as a lot of our colleagues don’t register their volunteering hours as they see it a...s just part of what they do!
What is most humbling is when we can be there for people in our community in a time of need. In Newport, the pet centre suffered a horrific fire last year - our colleagues donated cleaning products. In Totland, West Wight Nursery was the victim of a senseless theft - our colleagues helped to replace much needed equipment. It is our colleagues that bring alive the values of a co-operative. Thank you ❤️

Still wondering why we have been nominated for the Business in the Community Award at the 2019 Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for Excellence?
Since April 2017, the Manager of our sister store in Ryde has helped 33 people from back-to-work schemes. He has given them the opportunity to try their skills in a store environment and a number of these have gone on to take a permanent position in store – nine in total.
Store Manager, Mark, dedicates a lot of time... and energy into various schemes and organisations including Shaw Trust, Wheatsheaf Trust Isle of Wight, No Barriers, Jobcentre Plus and Military Preparation College Isle of Wight. In fact, he has done so well that No Barriers currently has no one left on its waiting list. We are very proud of Mark and our colleagues who make a difference in their local community 🌟

Did you know in 2018/19, us and our sister stores on the Isle of Wight had six local charity partners 1st Ryde 1st Binstead Scouts - Members & Parents, Bembridge Harbour Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Isle of Wight SANDS Group, Isle of Wight Youth Trust, and West Wight Youth FC. They support around 1,800 local people!
With your help, we raised £7,853.13 for them which went towards helping bereaved families, seriously ill patients, children and young adults in... times of emotional distress and lots more.
Why are we telling you this? We are preparing for this year's Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for Excellence on Friday 18th October where we have been nominated for the Business in the Community Award 🤩

Did you hear last weeks news that the RSPCA seized 65 dogs from a van and house on the Island? They put out an appeal for help and we jumped at the chance along with six of our sister stores in the Isle of Wight.
Together we donated £400 and 13 boxes of dog food. Read all about it here: https://www.thesouthernco-operative.co.uk /…/stores-pack-to…/

Some of our wonderful colleagues have been out litter picking and collected six bags of rubbish! And they weren't the only ones.

With just 11 days, 19 hours and 30 something minutes to go until the 120th Royal Isle of Wight County Show, today we are celebrating tomatoes.
They are so versatile that when we asked the IOW's Tomato Stall for a recipe, we didn't have a clue what they would come back with. How about some roasted Isle of Wight tomato and cheddar waffles! Yum!

Did you like our cheese post last week showcasing a local producer ahead of the IOW County Show? This week we are celebrating all things garlic and are excited to share with you a tip for every garlic lover out there!
Here is advice from Barnes, the Director of The Garlic Farm on the IOW, on how to avoid smelling of garlic: “Eat more of it! The body’s ability to process the odorous elements of garlic increases with consumption. Whilst you build up this metabolic tolerance, ea...ting an apple after a garlicky meal works extremely well.”
So next time you are picking up a Garlic Farm product in our Local Flavours range, don’t forget to also pick up an apple! The Garlic Farm produces an amazing range of garlicky delights from fresh garlic bulbs to delicious sauces and dressings.
Given you a taste of our Local Flavours range? See you at the show’s Food Pavillion on 30th June.

What does Gallybagger, Borthwood and Blue Slipper have in common? They are the names of three cheeses from The Isle Of Wight Cheese Company. Not only that but they all also have local connections.
The name Gallybagger (unpasteurised hard cheese) comes from the local island word for a scarecrow; Borthwood (soft white cheese) is the name of ancient woodland copse that neighbours the farm; and Blue Slipper (the gooey soft blue cheese) is also the name of the gault clay that lin...es a lot of the southern coastline of the island. Sadly, this clay falls in to the sea regularly and when the cheese is ripe it is meant to spill out just how the clay slips down the cliff.
Given you a taste of our Local Flavours range? Head to our stores to give local cheese a try. Or come and visit us at this year’s IOW County Show in the Food Pavillion on 30th June.
