£150,000 BROUGH MOTORCYCLE RESTORED TO LOOK UNRESTORED – FOR SALE WITH H&H CLASSICS
1932 Brough Superior 680 Black Alpine Central To Debate About Restoration
Sometimes the old ones really are the best ones and you don’t want to mess with them. That is the case with this wonderful Brough motorbike restored to look unrestored by the leading marque restoration specialist, Simon Miles.
... It is estimated to sell for ÂŁ100,000 - ÂŁ150,000 by H&H Classics on July 30 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham where it can be viewed under NMM supervision.
See catalogue online: https://online.handh.co.uk/m/view-auction s/catalog/id/112/
The work to restore this bike cost more than a normal restoration. A lot of original parts were used in its restoration.
It is one of only two bikes restored by Simon Miles to retain the patina of age. The trend is increasing to keep the look of bikes original rather than making them appear to be shiny brand new looking restorations.
The Brough Motorcycle marque will be forever associated with T.E. Lawrence, known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ who bought one of the first Brough SS100s in 1925 having previously owned three Brough SS80s. The crash that would end his life came while riding another SS100, on a narrow road near his cottage in 1935.
Recent sales have seen unrestored bikes sell for the same or even more than restored models. The reason for this development may be that there are less and less unrestored bikes in existence says Mark Bryan of H&H Classics.
Adding to the interest in this Brough is the fact that it is a correct numbers bike and comes complete with (unusually) five old style log books detailing the ownership history - one old log book is more like the norm.
The first owner of this machine was a Mr Ireson who lived just down the road from the Brough factory in Nottingham. He sold the bike back to George Brough in 1934.
The bike looks stunning with its ‘unrestored’ look of age which speaks of miles travelled and years of loving care. It is currently on display at the National Motor Cycle Museum until the H&H sale on 30th July.
Mark Bryan adds: “This Brough is well known to the Brough Owners Club. It is a superb usable investment bike that still retains its original petrol tank and gearbox and has a magnificent feel that makes it look very original and unrestored.”

COLLECTION OF TEN RARE DOUGLAS MOTORBIKES HIDDEN AWAY IN BERKSHIRE FOR MANY YEARS ENTERS THE SPOTLIGHT AT H&H CLASSICS SALE AT THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM IN BIRMINGHAM ON JULY 30
John Anstice-Brown’s 1927 Douglas SB27 Combination last used on The Banbury Run with his wife Brenda in the sidecar in 1959.
The late Motor Magazine journalist John Anstice-Brown, born in 1934, was a huge enthusiast for the Douglas motorcycle and built a collection. Ten of them are now being sold... by H&H Classics on July 30 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
See catalogue online: https://online.handh.co.uk/m/view-auction s/catalog/id/112/
Besides collecting Douglas bikes John Anstice-Brown’s hobbies included motor racing and in 1972 he was British GT Champion.
He stored his motorbike collection in his shed in Hitchin, Herts, in various states of disrepair when he tired of biking. After his death the family took them out and discovered that they had a big collection of Douglas models, most not known to still exist according to the Douglas Owners Club machine register.
Mark Bryan of H&H Classics Motorcycle Department, comments: “It is people like John Anstice-Brown who embody the true passion of the Collector. It is thanks to his work on saving Douglas bikes that we are able today to rediscover some machines that had slipped off the radar. This sale provides a golden opportunity to acquire one of these Douglas rarities.”
Some of the notable bikes include some Douglas DT race bikes and a very rare TT replica. All are being sold at ‘No Reserve’.
Douglas was a British motorcycle manufacturer from 1907–1957 based in Kingswood, Bristol, owned by the Douglas family. The marque was especially known for its horizontally opposed twin cylinder engined bikes and as manufacturers of speedway machine.
Pictured is a 1927 Douglas Model SB27 combination ‘barn find’ (£5,000 - £8,000), a totally unrestored and original bike with a Watsonian sidecar.
It has been in the same family ownership since mid-1950's as seen in the old black and white image at the top of the press release.
The engine turns freely with good compression despite the fact that it was last used on the Banbury Run circa 1960! But it will require recommissioning before being returned to road use. It comes complete with a spare engine.
And then there is another challenge, a circa.1929 Douglas DT5 for sale at No Reserve - an iconic Dirt Track machine that comes with reconditioned forks.
And finally, notable among the ten Douglas bikes in this collection is this very rare bike (below) c.1926 Douglas TT Replica with DT engine and Norton forks. If you are a fan of the Douglas marque, don’t miss this sale!

Magnificent Alex Marquez takes hat trick with Catalan GP victory as another new lap record falls to Triumph 765cc triple
For the first time in his Grand Prix career, Alex Marquez took his third victory in a row with a dominant display on home soil at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and he now moves into the lead of the Moto2™ championship.
Further demonstrating just how well the Spanish rider has connected with the greater power and torque of the Triumph 765cc triple engi...ne in his EG 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex machine, Marquez also set a new Moto2™ race lap record at the iconic track. After seven rounds of Triumph powering the 2019 season, a new record has been set at every single race; a combination of fastest lap, top speed or race time, or a full sweep of records.
The racing in the Moto2™ class was as close as ever all weekend, starting with a remarkable free practice 1 in which the top eight riders were separated by under 0.3 seconds. By free practice 3 on Saturday morning the top 22 were all within one second, and at the end of qualifying, just 0.1 seconds separated the top six riders.
The closeness of competition this year makes it all the more impressive that Marquez has now won three in a row, and that he did so in such dominant fashion, leading home Thomas Luthi by 1.9 seconds with Jorge Navarro a further 0.6 seconds back. Previous championship leader Lorenzo Baldassarri, who has also taken three victories this season, crashed out with 16 of the 22 laps to run at the tricky turn ten, which also claimed many others during the weekend. In doing so he relinquished his championship lead for the first time this season and now lies fourth, behind Marquez, Luthi and Navarro.
Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer, said: “Congratulations to Alex Marquez on his third consecutive win to become the new championship leader, and also to Augusto Fernandez for taking his first Moto2 pole position on Saturday. It’s great to see new riders at the top of the timesheets as Triumph continues to bring new life and excitement to the Moto2 series. Again this weekend the numbers speak for the performance of our engines; another new lap record and a new Moto2 top speed at the Barcelona circuit. With the exception of the US Grand Prix, the 765cc Triumph triple has now powered Moto2 to a new lap record at every race this season, and in Austin a new lap record was only evasive because of the weather conditions and even then a best Moto2 race time was still set.”
The Triumph Moto2™ 765cc race engine is a development of the class-leading Street Triple RS 765cc road motorcycle and produces more than 140ps and the same visceral soundtrack.
Next up for the Moto2™ series is a back-to-back pairing of races with the TT Assen, Netherlands on 30 June followed by the German Grand Prix on 7 July.
