Every other Wednesday afternoon we run a stroke drop-in service at the Paul Brown Day Hospital, Princess Royal Telford.
The afternoons are attended by various organisations that come to answer questions, offer support, and signpost patients and carers of patients who have had a stroke.
The next event the team are holding will be from 2pm until 4pm this Wednesday (11th July), which will be attended by Headway and Clinical Psychology staff.
... There is no need to book – so the team would like to welcome anyone along who requires advice or support!

SaTH’s Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist, Marie Haywood, will have an information stand at our Princess Royal Hospital today.
Marie will be joined outside the Apley Restaurant at PRH by the local advisor for Parkinson’s UK, Val McKay. Marie (left) said: “My intention is to help raise awareness of who I am and how I can help ward staff support patients who are suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.
“I will be pushing the Get It On Time campaign and will be asking staff for feedback of the yellow stickers we use to identify patients who need timed medication. I need to know if this is helpful for staff and a benefit to patient care. All feedback will go into a collection box and we will draw a staff member to receive a voucher and box of chocolates.”

Our latest #FacesofSaTH is Jessica Brazier, an Audiology Assistant Technical Officer.
Jess has worked at the Trust for 10 years – spending the first 8 of those years in Head and Neck Outpatients, before an opportunity arose in the Audiology team. Now, her role involves being responsible for hearing aid repairs, maintenance and aftercare clinics.
With ambition to pursue a career in Audiology and specialise in Dementia Care, Jess says the best part of her job is having the abil...ity to improve the quality of life for patients. “If a patient is having difficulties with their hearing aid, then it is my role to identify a solution. Since being in post I have attended conferences for Dementia Care and feel very passionate about promoting this within Audiology”.
Outside of work, Jess is a keen photographer, who enjoys exploring, travelling and capturing everything along the way, especially during weekend trips to the Peak District and Yorkshire.

*IMPORTANT MESSAGE*
The following is a joint statement from Dr Edwin Borman, Medical Director, Deirdre Fowler, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality and Sara Biffen, Interim Chief Operating Officer:
“People will be aware of reports across the national media about the considerable difficulties that the NHS as a whole is experiencing this winter.
... “As we have publicised recently, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) – like many other hospital trusts – is experiencing very high numbers of patients presenting at our two Emergency Departments at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) and the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford, as well as a high number of admissions, meaning that all of our Ward areas are full.
“Our staff are working incredibly hard under what are very difficult circumstances, but the number of patients we are seeing means that there are long delays in seeing patients in our Emergency Departments, and in helping patients on our Wards.
“There has been a national recommendation that elective surgery and Outpatient clinics should be cancelled until the end of this month. At SaTH, we intend to review, on a week-by-week basis, elective operations and elective clinics. We will, however, ensure that patients requiring urgent assessment and treatment continue to be seen as a priority, as will patients requiring assessment and treatment for cancer and other potentially life-changing conditions.
“These decisions will be made in consultation with clinicians, including our doctors and nurses.
“Anyone who has their elective procedure cancelled will be contacted by the Trust.
“We would like to apologise for these exceptional measures but, given the considerable pressures our two hospitals are facing, we have to ensure that we prioritise the care of urgent and emergency patients.”

Filming of a snowy scene for 'A Christmas Carol' at the Royal Salop Infirmary in 1984.
Another #tbt# fact is that the 'fake' grave of Ebeneezer Scrooge, as in the film, can still be found in St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury. The headstone is not a "prop" but an actual period headstone, on which the original inscription had deteriorated to the point that the movie production people asked the church if they could use it and inscribe the "Ebenezer Scrooge" wor...ds on it.

This week’s Face of SaTH is Medical Performance Manager Sam Hooper.
Sam, who has worked in the Trust for 29 years, says the most enjoyable part of her role is “working with great people. We are very lucky at SaTH to have such exceptional and dedicated people at all levels of the organisation. I am also a ILM7 accredited Executive Coach and really enjoy helping and supporting the great staff in our Trust.”
When asked what it would be if she could learn anything, Sam answered ...“I love learning, and do continue to develop my skills. Since completing my Coaching qualification four years ago, I have qualified as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner and I have just completed my Reiki Practitioner qualification. I am thinking about my next thing to learn…. so watch this space! I believe continued learning and self-awareness throughout life is very important.”
Outside of work, Sam owns lots of animals including a cat, a goldfish, horses, dogs, ducks and a herd of cattle! She says her passion is her horse, Blondie, who at 26 years old still enjoys his time doing dressage, a little bit of jumping, fun rides, hacking and much more. “If I won the lottery tomorrow I would set up a rescue centre for all sorts of animals. I have always loved animals and when I was a child I always wanted to be a vet.”

The staff on ward 19 were absolutely amazing, my daughter (who is 5) wasn’t the easiest of patient after 3 different hospitals with multiple tests, needles, medicines and even an operation in just a few days! They all looked after her with such love and care (even a cuddle for mummy when needed)

I hope all you ears have recovered from esmees squealing!

I’d 100% recommend the hospital to any family or friends xx

Victoria (Tor), Fergus’s midwife is taking such good care of my grandson. My daughter and son-in-law are ably to stay in a family room, right next to where little Fergus is. Fergus was born at 29 weeks, and we’ve all been worried about him. I’m so happy he’s where he is - I feel sure he couldn’t be in a better place. Thank you for all you are doing for Fergus, Jo and Denzil; we all really appreciate it.

Thank you so much to the A and E staff who cared for my mum so well last night after a fall. A special mention for Mustafa who mad a worrying time so much better. Shes now home recovering.

My dad was rushed in on Monday following a cardiac arrest. As a family we can't praise the staff enough for the care they gave my dad and us as family in a&e, Amu ward and palliative care team. The care and support was excellent right up to yesterday morning when he lost his battle.

My 2 year old little boy was admitted to the Children's Ward on the 8th May for 4 days. The staff on the ward were amazing and they allowed us to stay with our son as we are from Liverpool. We were treated so well and we couldn't thank them enough for caring for our son!

If we could give it 10 stars we would... We need to say a massive thank you to everyone we had dealings with in the women’s and children’s centre.

In Triage and Delivery Suite. There isn’t a word that is enough to describe the patient care. From the start of my labour (thanks to Gael in Triage) to the end and beyond (Ruth and Carys in Delivery)

I don’t know where I would be today if it wasn’t for the professional, kind and calm manner of these ladies. Not only with me but their support to my husband too.

I know I wasn’t the easiest patient to deal with but I can’t say enough to thank them all. The facilities were amazing and everything we could have wanted or needed was right there. Honestly ladies, you are doing a fantastic job, and anyone who has there apprehensions about delivering in Telford, due to location, preference etc. Forget them all. My only regret is that I never had my other children here.

I was moved to the Wrekin MLU, after delivery, and all be it not got the same facilities as the Women’s and Children’s Centre, the compassion and care shown by the staff that I had dealings with was brilliant. After struggling to feed my daughter and being up for over 40 hours, we had the pleasure of a one to one with Val, (I think) who is worth her weight in gold, she helped feed and reassure and not once was I judged or given the ‘breast is best speal’ you hear so often after requesting a formula feed for my little gannet. All of the midwives on the unit were lovely too.

In a way I’m gutted that I won’t have the pleasure of dealing with any of the ladies from the past few days ever again.

Thank you x

I just want to say a huge thank you to all the staff we met during our visits, we popped to A&E suspecting my 8 year old had broken her arm, she was given a teddy by the triage nurses and taken to a private bay quickly. We were then moved to the children’s ward overnight, and all the nurses were so lovely, we all were given strawberry milkshakes!! Thankfully no operation was needed and we got to go home on Christmas Eve, Daisy was given a big bag of toys which was such a lovely surprise. We have been back today to have the plaster changed, the service is brilliant, within two hours she was seen by a doctor, plaster changed - and given a selection box- x rayed and back to the doctor, I couldn’t fault it at all! Every member of staff we met was amazing and really helped Daisy to be at ease. Thank you all so much for making a scary situation a fun and almost enjoyable for her x

User

The doctors where rude and it was really understaffed, I was taken in for emergency blood test at 10pm last night by ambulance and I waited until 2am for them to tell me they couldn’t be bothered to do my bloods it’s disgraceful and not the first bad experience I’ve had there either

User

Rubbish. I needed a part for my machine that keeps me alive and told to come back one week later. The staff are horrible and do not care about patients.

My uncle who is mentally and physically disabled was taken to and a and e 16th dec A and e waiting time was ridiculous 17 hours we were waiting and to top it all in the plaster room of all places!

He was admitted and was on ward 7 who were brill with him, then he was moved to day surgery ward well where do i start on there...

Most of the staff had no time for him he was nearly given food he wasnt allowed due to him having a swallow problem he should of had puree diet which i was there luckily and told her its above his bed in black and white.

Apparently the nurse on there also told his carer if he didnt eat his meal not to bother and leave him.

He hadnt been washed, and apparently his carers who went into him told us the nurse told them to leave it and let ward 8 do it,

Luckily they didnt do that and they washed him.

Appalling treatment by day surgery ward.

My nan complained about it so they moved him to ward 8 where they have time for him and his needs. They are lovely.

User

If I could rate it a 0 I would. You can Ignore someone who's embedded something metal and unsterile in there arm and leave it when it could do me more harm than attempting to remove it the doctor said there's no sign of infection yet it's more raised than the Wrekin you really need to sort this out because with self harm your treated like shit and refused treatment, I'm sick of being treated this way when my illness is just as valid as anyone else's.

The doctors where rude and it was really understaffed, I was taken in for emergency blood test at 10pm last night by ambulance and I waited until 2am for them to tell me they couldn’t be bothered to do my bloods it’s disgraceful and not the first bad experience I’ve had there either
