The Sweeney is a family owned and run boutique hotel set in the heart of the Shropshire Marches.
The Sweeney Description
The Sweeney Country House Hotel, set in the gorgeous rolling Marches, has everything you could want from a Hotel. Few hotels can boast the ability to cater for both a romantic weekend for two to a full blown wedding party but we at the Sweeney like to think we can. We like to extend to our guests the warm welcome that they should expect from a privately owned and run Hotel coupled with the contemporary style that they should expect from a boutique Hotel, not to mention the tranquillity to be found from our glorious Award Winning grounds – the perfect English Countryside setting.
The Sweeney has been owned by the same family since 1993, with Sean taking over full ownership in 2006. Since taking over Sean has rejuvenated the Sweeney, turning it into what it is today. Retaining the best of the character and architecture of the building, he has refurbished the interior to the highest standard and turned the Sweeney into one of the premier boutique hotels in the area. We think that time spent in a hotel should be a treat and at the Sweeney we hope that your stay with us will be!

THE HISTORY OF THE SWEENEY HALL. . . . . .
The Sweeney Hall Hotel, or 'Sweeney' as it was known was purchased in 1563 by Arthur Chamber from Henry Fitzlan, Earl of Arundel. The property was sold by his son in 1623 to Thomas Baker, who was in the employ of Mr Chamber, and married his housekeeper. His son Thomas, who, according to history books, erected in 1640 "A new fair house in Sweeney, a handsome pile of buildings', succeeded Mr Baker. He supported the parliamentary side in the civil war, and was made High Sheriff of the county in 1649.
In October 1649, Norry, King of Armes, issued a declaration granting Thomas Baker of Swaney a crest of armes carrying three swans' heads and surmounted by a hand holding a further swan's head. The name "Sweeney" could have derived from the original "Swaney".
The congregational church of Protestant dissenters was formed in the township of Sweeney in 1662 after ejection from Oswestry. The pastor also acted as Chaplin to Mr Baker of Sweeney Hall, in which a pulpit existed. The ancient burial ground of the first nonconformist is still maintained in the grounds of the hall, and includes the grave of "Thomas Baker Esq. ", Deceased March 9th, aged 68, AD 1675" Another inscription, which is still legible, reads, "Here lies Mrs Abigail Chetwood, daughter of Sir Richard Chetwood, who died 1st May 1658. "
Only the pillars of the entrance gates and supporting wall remains of the "new fair house" of Mr Baker. He died without issue in 1675, an the estate passed to a relative, Thomas Browne, whose family motto "Dead Shame" is incorporated into the stained glass crest above the front door of the present hall.

Wow! We had our wedding here on 5th May and the day just went perfect. This venue is so bespoke and worth every single penny spent. The staff were amazing and Sean and Paul’s efforts on the day were fantastic. I would recommend this venue to anyone getting married. For every request we had it was met. Many of our guests have said it’s the best wedding they have ever been to.

We had our wedding here on Saturday, it was absolutely fantastic could not fault anything it ran so smoothly, even the breakfast the next morning was fantastic. All staff are fantastic and could not do enough. Thankyou for making out big day a day to remember.
Took my mum yesterday for Mother’s Day...great service and food was beautiful. Nice little touch came away with a little posey of flowers too :)
This is the second time we've eaten at the Sweeny on new Years day and we love it. The staff are friendly, polite and very helpful.The setting is beautiful and the food is very good... We would highly recommend the place to both family and friends.

My son and daughter in law held there wedding reception there yesterday. We all had a wonderful time. The staff were so attentive and nothing was to much trouble for them. The food was superb and all of the guests commented on how tasty the food was which came in great quantities . Lindsey was fantastic and a credit to the Sweeney. Both manager Sean and assistant manager Lindsey made sure that the day ran smoothly. Thank you all so very much.
My husband surprised me for our 12th Wedding Anniversary by booking a meal at this venue last night. We live not far away but we'd never been and always wanted to go. Well it didn't disappoint. The food was truly amazing, best I've had in a long time and that was true of every course of our three course meal. All the staff were so friendly and efficient. They even gave me a little present of some of the homemade honeycomb from my dessert. Really thoughtful, unexpected and very kind. We will definitely be coming back. Thank you x
Just eaten one of the nicest Sunday lunches I've ever had.. I'm gluten free and usually find eating out stressful and disappointing.. but nothing was too much trouble... I managed to eat an almost identical meal to everyone else... special thanks to the chef for making me some gluten free stuffing too... it was delicious.
I had a lovely surprise 60th Birthday lunch yesterday with 43 family and friends. The meal was superb thank you so much Shaun and staff
Had a lovely birthday meal and up to its usual 5star rating. No complaints apart from the heat! not Sweeney’s fault �����
Had a beautiful afternoon tea here on Thursday, from the initial booking phone call I was made to feel welcome and the gentleman I dealt with was very accommodating with booking us in earlier than they would normally serve afternoon tea. Really welcoming on arrival and especially attentive to my little boy, which is a great touch. The sandwiches were lovely and fresh and cakes delicious too, will certainly return. Thank you
Friendly staff, great rooms and brilliant food, from the evening meal to the breakfast at amazing prices for the quality and quantity! I travel with work literally all over the country but this one will stay with me. Thouroghly reccommended. Well done !
Beautiful relaxed fabulous terrace and attention to details to everything - best bed I have slept in yours and the most sumptuous cushions and pillows - great food and cocktails and very reasonably priced - perfect stay and in this weather just all delicious!
As always, good food, service and value for money. Had Sunday lunch with 5 friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. You can always rely on Sweeney Hall. Thanks again
