It looks like Storm Ciara has finally blown her way clear of the region. As a result of the high winds and heavy rain our tree gangs were very busy this weekend. We received 11 call outs on Sunday alone. There were many reports of trees blocking the highway, including a large tree which was completely blocking the A5. Upon arrival the crew worked with the Police to clear the fallen tree, and made the highway safe again. In addition to a small tree outside St Paul's in the town centre, fallen trees in Crook Lane, Pheasey and Coltham Road in Short Heath were also reported. Well done and many thanks to the teams who responded so quickly on Sunday in the very challenging conditions. Our tree gang and street cleansing teams are continuing the clear up around the borough.

We have received a few telephone enquiries about Garden Waste collections for 2020. Garden Waste collection dates will not display on the online postcode finder just yet.
We are currently working our way across the borough to deliver calendars for 2020 & 2021 collections. It can take us up to 6 weeks to deliver to all households in Walsall, so please be patient! The Garden Waste collection service will resume w/c Monday 6 April and your new calendar will confirm your collection day and dates.

It was still dark and misty on Sunday morning when our Street Cleansing Team started to place cones around Junction 10 island in readiness for major clean up. Safety was of the utmost importance for the team working on such a busy section of Walsall’s road network. Responding to recent complaints about litter and debris around the M6 junction the crew set to work to remove paper, cans, bottles, wrappers and cartons from around the island. Once the area was litter and debri...s free the team used strimmers and blowers to clear weeds and overgrown shrubbery from the island and the edge of the carriageway. The 5 hour transformation saw the team remove a massive two van loads of rubbish and shrubbery from the island, including some stray wheel trims from vehicles! We’d like to say a huge thank you to the whole team who worked in the challenging location to make such a difference. Well done to you all 🏆👍👏

Weekly reports from our recycling contractor identify the items being put into Walsall recycling bins which shouldn't be in there. We call these items 'contamination', and they can cause a whole lorry load of recycling to go to landfill. Christmas and New Year aren’t usual weeks, with lots of wrapping paper, food, celebrations and extra packaging. Unfortunately, we can see this reflected in raised recycling contamination levels. Current reports from our contractor tell u...s that this festive period, our main recycling spoilers were: ☹️ Food waste ☹️ Liquid filled bottles ☹️ Textiles The pictures you can see are items from Walsall recycling bins, removed from the conveyor belt at the recycling plant.
✔️Bottles and jars should be empty, rinsed and dry. Liquid and residue can seep out when bottles and jars are compacted in the recycling lorry, leaking on to other recycling in the load, making any contamination worse. ✔️Food waste should be put into your general waste bin or into your home composting. ✔️Textiles can be recycled but please don't put them in your green recycling bin! They can be taken to either of the HWRCs in Bloxwich or Aldridge, or if they're of good quality many charity shops will be pleased to accept them as donations. Donations can be made by dropping items off at shops or by using charity bags for collections on specified days .
