Wightwick Manor & Gardens

About Wightwick Manor & Gardens

Built in 1887 by Theodore Mander Wightwick has become one of the outstanding examples of a Victorian house furnished in the Aesthetic style.

Wightwick Manor & Gardens Description

The legacy of a family's passion for Victorian art and design

In 1937 Geoffrey Mander MP did something remarkable - he persuaded the National Trust to accept a house that was just 50 years old.

The local paint manufacturer and Liberal MP had been left the timber-framed house by his father Theodore. Taking inspiration from a lecture on 'the House Beautiful' by Oscar Wilde, Theodore and his wife Flora had decorated its interiors with the designs of William Morris and his Arts and Crafts contemporaries.

This house of the Aesthetic Movement was, by 1937, a relic of an out of fashion era. Yet, so complete was the design that it was worthy of preservation. Having given the house to the Trust, Geoffrey and his second wife Rosalie became its live-in curators, opening the house to the public and adding to its contents. In particular they added a remarkable collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings by Rossetti, Burne-Jones and their followers.

So take a step back in time and visit the ever-changing family home that’s also the world’s most unlikely art gallery.

Wightwick Manor - haven of a romantic industrialist.

We Will Remember Them. The Mander family commemorated the employees of Mander Brothers Ltd who fell during the Great War. The memorial plaque which used to be outside the factory works is now at Wightwick Manor, where there will be an act of remembrance today, 11th November, at 2pm. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Yesterday evening, our House and Collections manager, Helen, was invited to the launch of The Lowry's new exhibition 'Lowry & The Pre-Raphaelites'.
Two of our artworks by Rossetti are on display, helping to explore L S Lowry's passion for the Pre-Raphaelites, bringing together works by his two favourite artists, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, alongside Edward Burne-Jones and others.
You can find out more about their exhibition, which runs from Saturday 10 November to Sunday 24 February, here: thelowry.com/whats-on/lowry-the-pre-rapha elites

Our visit on 23rd Feb was a wonderful experience . It is a really special homely manor and everyone was so helpful and friendly from the lovely gentleman on the car park, the girls in reception, the stewards in all the rooms and the staff in the cafe. The pre raphaelite painting s and the William Morris fabrics were amazing . Can't wait to return and enjoy the gardens in the summer. A big thank you to you all

One of the best properties and best days yet. Thouroughly recommend. Will be back for the Christmas lights and in the summer to enjoy the gardens.

As suggested by other reviewers this house is not as clinical as other trust properties, more lived in.

Loved it!, it’s a jewel right on our doorstep!. Great for exploring as a family and steeped in history. The people who work there are so nice and accommodating and couldn’t do enough for us. Plus we found the hidden playground up on the hill which was wonderful. We will definitely go back x

User

If you like Pre Raphaelite art you will love this property. Take the tour, well worth it with very knowledgeable guides. Exhibition of paintings and ceramics by the De Morgan's. Well worth a visit. Enjoy.

User

I fell in love with this house the moment I walked through the door and it was a feeling that stayed with me long after we had left. Compared to some of the other NT houses which can feel somewhat cold and aloof this is the exact opposite being both warm and welcoming. In just about every room there is a wealth of treasures for you to discover and it is not a tour that should be hurried. A nice touch was that there were plenty of seats marked with a cat cushion that meant the visitor could sit and just soak up the atmosphere of the room. It also meant the you might notice one or two things that you may have missed at first glance. Separate to the main house is an art gallery featuring the wonderful Pre-Raphaelite work of William and Evelyn De Morgan. The staff were all extremely friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
