About Barwick-In-Elmet Maypole Trust

Barwick-in-Elmet - home to Britain's tallest traditional maypole!

Barwick-In-Elmet Maypole Trust Description

Barwick-in-Elmet is home to Britain's tallest traditional maypole. At nearly 90 feet, it's a proud focal point in the centre of the village.

For centuries, the maypole has been lowered every three years at Easter, for repairs and re-painting, before being raised again in May, accompanied by traditional maypole dancing by local school children, the crowning of a Maypole Queen and a procession through the village.

Barwick Maypole Trust are endeavouring to maintain this great Yorkshire tradition, although the ever present spectre of 'Health & Safety', along with increasing insurance costs, mean this isn't the easiest of tasks.

You can support us by attending our annual Beer Festival, or our triennial Maypole Festival (the next one being in 2017).

We always need volunteers too, so if you think you can help, please get in touch!

With just a year to go before we lower the maypole for repairs and painting, it's time to turn our attention to the maypole garlands. The four garlands which hang half-way up the pole are a really important part of our village tradition. Each one has over 1,500 hand-sewn rosettes.
And that's where you come in (we hope).
We need volunteers - old and new, young and old, ladies and gents - to help in sewing rosettes for the garlands. You only need basic sewing skills, and we provide instructions and all the required fabric. There are thousands to make, but many hands really do make light work! So please get in touch to offer your help. Hopefully we can have a small army busily sewing rosettes across the village. Message us here on Facebook, or email maypole@vipond.plus.com. Thank you in advance!!!

We are delighted to announce that the utterly fabulous Harrogate Band will be joining us once again at the Maypole Festival 2020. They'll be leading the procession through the village and performing throughout the afternoon. Listen out for their rendition of "Barwick Green" (better known as the theme to "The Archers").

Happy New Year's Eve Maypole Fans! If you're celebrating in the village tonight, try to make time to come down to the maypole at midnight. It's a grand old tradition that some years gets forgotten. There really is no better way to see the New Year in. This is back in 2016. Come on down tonight if you're about.

A damp but well-attended act of remembrance at The Cross this morning. And the unveiling of the village's Tommy silhouette.

Wilson's pies will once again be on offer at Barwick Beer Festival. Yorkshire Small Pork Pie Champions. Winners of the Old Pork Pie Appreciation Society Annual Competition. They also go down very nicely with a pint of Yorkshire ale.
Featured here with Yorkshire Caviar (a.k.a. mushy peas) and obligatory mint sauce. They'll sell like hot pies (so to speak), so get there early.
Barwick Village Hall, Saturday 15th September, from 12pm.
