OPPORTUNITY IN VETERINARY CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
CTDS 2015 Ltd is part of the Veterinary Pathology Group (UK and Ireland) and is based near Leeds in West Yorkshire. We are looking for an experienced, suitably qualified clinical pathologist, with RCVS registration, to join our team. We would ideally welcome an individual interested in business development and the provision of external education. We offer a highly competitive salary based on your qualifications and experience, a ...generous performance related bonus scheme as well as a company pension scheme and paid CPD allowance. The group has a strong pathology team of European and American boarded clinical and anatomic pathologists and provides quality diagnostic services in haematology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, cytology, histopathology, toxicology, PCR, and microbiology for first and second opinion practices and tertiary referral institutions. Our caseload is predominantly dogs and cats with avian and reptiles constituting approximately 5-10% of cases and a similar proportion of equine submissions. You are invited initially to discuss the role informally, and in complete confidence, with the Veterinary Director Nick Carmichael who can be contacted via email to recruitment@ctdslab.co.uk or by telephone on 00 44 113 287 0175.

Same day parvovirus antigen testing is available at the lab and is useful in the very first few days after the onset of signs. After this time we need to use PCR as the antigen test will be negative. PCR will continue to detect the virus and is quantitative so if the signs are suspicious then ask for parvovirus PCR which can be run on the same sample... as the antigen test.

Making The Most Of Haematology (1)
We examine blood smears from all haematology submissions, stain them appropriately and then microscopically check cell morphology and look for abnormalities that are too discrete for automated analysers to detect. The importance of this examination cannot be emphasised enough - red cell changes such as the presence of dacrocytes, spherocytes, blood borne parasites along with white cell changes such as neutrophilic toxic changes, reactive ly...mphocytes and neoplastic cells will not always be apparent from the results generated by automated haematology analysers and can often only be identified by the trained human eye. All cells start to break down and deteriorate as soon as they are removed from the body due to the removal of them from their renewable source of nutrients. Many morphological changes can be missed or misinterpreted following this cell degradation (irrespective of the storage and or anticoagulant used) especially after prolonged storage. Furthermore certain inflammatory conditions and neoplastic conditions can cause cells to deterioate even more rapidly. By submitting a FRESH blood smear with every haematology submission not only will you increase the accuracy and usefulness of the haematology report but you will also reduce the number of repeat or inconclusive reports produced.
