Our new poppies have arrived! We decided to treat our female staff to the new special edition poppies that commemorate the Women who lost their lives as a direct result of WW1 and the men have the 2018 WW1 Centenary poppies. Lest We Forget

Howarth Funeral Service don't make any charges for funerals of children and never have but we have always had to pass on any other expenses, so how pleased was I to receive a letter from Wakefield MDC this week stating that from now onwards they will waive all charges for funerals of children. Ive just seen a news item on Sky news which stated that the governments Autumn budget will include special payments for children - Well done Wakefield MDC for being a step ahead of the government!

The Emergency defibrillators are now fitted into the cabinets outside our Howarth Funeral Service premises at Denby Dale Road Thornes and Alverthorpe Road. Last time I posted many asked if they could be used on children (hope they never will) be but they can be used after 1 year old. I’m waiting for the date for the training day to I will post again for anyone interested

We have fitted 2 public access defibrillators at our Alverthorpe Road and Thornes Premises. The first defibrillator at 160 Alverthorpe Road was funded by customers at the Scarborough Arms in conjunction with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the other at 125 Denby Dale Road, Thornes was funded by Staff at Howarth Funeral Service. If they are ever needed in a 999 emergency the operator will tell you the access code. Over 100,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest and whilst CPR saves around 9% of lives the use of a defibrillator alongside CPR raises the survival rate to 50%. We are planning a short demonstration, by the Ambulance Service, at our function rooms in Thornes once they are fully operational and will post further for anyone interested in attending the session.

This week Howarth Funeral Service have received a Cuddle Cot as a donation from funds raised by Samantha and Michael, the parents of baby Logan, who passed away three years ago.
Logan's story began on 22nd Oct 2013 when he was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome and a hole in the heart at only 6 days old. He had heart surgery to repair the hole and fit a pacemaker in LGI during February 2014, it wasn't until 31st Oct 2014 that a simple cold turned into bronchopneumonia.
Logan to...ok his last breath on Halloween night. After Logan passed away Samantha set up Logan's Smile Facebook page to raise awareness of DS and Heart defects and to raise money ‘to give something back’. Samantha and Michael have raised £12,515, to date, in Logan’s memory.
They were approached by Angel Wings a year ago and took up the challenge to raise £1600 for a Cuddle Cot. Throughout the year Samantha and Michael raised half of the funds and the rest was donated by Allie Girling, a fellow ‘Angel Mum’ (Amy's Wings Fb page) They did this in the hope to give other families 'time to make memories'.
The Cuddle Cot is a brilliant concept which will give families the opportunity to take their baby home to spend that precious time they have left before the funeral.
It is a wonderful gift and whilst it is unbearable to think about losing a child. It will be very precious to those in need.

There is so much choice for coffins these days, this is one that we have for a funeral this week.

We continue to raise funds for Admiral Nurses (Dementia U.K.) The first Admiral Nurse started in Ossett last year and we now have a second nurse working in Wakefield - we have a long way to go before we catch up with our surrounding towns so please watch out for Ian Howarth's fundraising helping people with dementia. https://www.dementiauk.org/get-support/ad miral-nursing/

We have been actively promoting digital post-mortem for over a year. This week we are assisting a family who have chosen a digital Post Mortem as opposed to a traditional one; this involves a simple scan rather than the Pathologist Scalpel - I'm ready to say good riddance to the medieval practice and welcome to the 21st Century. The Coroner will not offer families this option, so the more people that know about this the better.
