Motorists are being warned they face massive bills for the once-simple task of changing a headlight bulb.
Drivers of some of the UK’s most popular small cars, including the VW Polo, Suzuki Swift and Honda Jazz, face bills of up to £846 due to the high-tech nature of modern lighting units. And the cost of replacing some units means second-hand cars with dodgy lights are at risk of being written off by insurers, according to consumer motoring magazine What Car? Sealed units A ...new study by the magazine found huge cost differences between cars fitted with standard halogen bulbs and those with the latest LED or High Intensity Discharge (HID) units. While a regular bulb costs as little as £4 to replace, LED and HID units cost between £200 and £800. LED and HID lights are far brighter than conventional halogen bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer but their complexity means they are very expensive and often come as part of a sealed unit, which stops single bulbs being replaced. If a bulb goes in a sealed headlight the entire unit has to be replaced.
Of the 13 vehicles examined, four came with HID bulbs on some or all trim levels and three had LED bulbs. Massive repair bill VW’s Polo is the worst offender. Replacing a traditional halogen bulb costs owners just £18 but owners of the top-end GTI model face a £846 repair bill for the car’s LED sealed headlight unit. The VW Polo GTI’s LED unit costs £846 to replace compared with £18 for a standard bulb Similarly, Suzuki Swift owners with SZ3 or SZT trim levels only have to pay £4 to replace a blown bulb, while those with a high-spec Swift SZ5 will have to pay £684 for a replacement HID unit.
The Suzuki Swift SZ5’s LED headlight costs £684 Even if the headlight unit isn’t sealed, HID bulbs are still far more expensive. The HID bulb for a Vauxhall Corsa Elite costs £317, while a halogen bulb for a lower spec version is just £17. Claire Evans, What Car? consumer editor, said: “The longevity of HID bulbs makes them a viable option on a new car.
However, if you are buying a used car you could be landed with a massive repair bill for a blown bulb that could even render the car a write-off due to it being uneconomical to repair.”

If you’ve ever looked at your car’s outside temperature display while idling in traffic on a nice summer day, you've probably noticed the display can vary quite a bit from reality.
Usually placed in the front fascia, behind the grille, the ambient air sensor will pick up the heat from hot asphalt or concrete. That’s why the temperature sent to your instrument cluster or media screen often changes when you finally get out of rush-hour traffic or to a location where the paveme...nt is cooler.
The sensor's low location puts it close to roadways, which are excellent at absorbing, storing and radiating heat from the sun.
When the sun’s energy is blocked or you can get enough fresh air rushing over the sensor, that’s when you’ll get a more accurate reading of the outside temperature.
The Weather Channel makes it clear that this situation isn’t exclusive to warm climates or seasons, but the sun can make you unaware of black ice-inducing temperatures on roadways.
You should also note, if you just got in your car, you should have a good grasp on what it was like when you were outside moments before.

With some foggy mornings ahead of us this week its important to be prepared and drive according to the conditions. Here are some tips for driving in the fog:
* Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front * Rear lights can give a false sense of security * Drive at a speed which is appropriate for the conditions ... * Reduce your speed if you can't see the road ahead * Remember those stopping distances too

Always drive at a speed that will allow you to stop within the section of road ahead that you can see to be clear. Remember on single track roads to take in to consideration the stopping distance of a vehicle coming in the other direction. #idrivemanual #driving #uk #idrive #ev #drivingtest #drivinghero #stop #drivingschool #drivinginstructor #drivinginstructors #drivinginstructormanchester #leeds #bradford

See people just never learn, I’ve personally seen 2 fatalities on this bypass alone.
This obviously is the bypass between #leeds and #bradford #leeds #a647, some people you just can’t educate and some people learn by watching their friends die.
... Unaware of the whole story and I think they all lived to tell the tale.

Sometimes there’s a limit to how fur, I mean far, you should personalise your car!
This driver struggled to read their instrument display, including speedometer and due to their lowered seat position, the road ahead. Sprucing up your vehicle can never come at the expense of safety.

Allow more time to FULLY de-ice all your vehicle windows before setting off.
Failure to do so is not only illegal, its dangerous & puts other road users at risk.

Fog (rules 234 to 236) Rule 234
Excellent drive, good control and intuition demonstrated in poor driving conditions.
... Before entering fog check your mirrors then slow down. If the word ‘Fog’ is shown on a roadside signal but the road is clear, be prepared for a bank of fog or drifting patchy fog ahead. Even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself in thick fog.
Rule 235 When driving in fog you should use your lights as required (see Rule 226) Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front. Rear lights can give a false sense of security be able to pull up well within the distance you can see clearly. This is particularly important on motorways and dual carriageways, as vehicles are travelling faster use your windscreen wipers and demisters beware of other drivers not using headlights not accelerate to get away from a vehicle which is too close behind you check your mirrors before you slow down. Then use your brakes so that your brake lights warn drivers behind you that you are slowing down stop in the correct position at a junction with limited visibility and listen for traffic. When you are sure it is safe to emerge, do so positively and do not hesitate in a position that puts you directly in the path of approaching vehicles.
Rule 236 You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves. Law RVLR regs 25 & 27

A small difference in speed can have a massive impact on the chances of survival in the event of a collision. Hit a child at 40mph and 80% will die, hit a child at 30mph and 80% will live!

Thank you West Yorkshire Police thank you for helping Bradford. I’d like Bradford Council to please take note and look at changing the layout of the road and possibly refuse planning permission for future businesses within the s confines of the great Horton road / sherbridge belt.
