I am DELIGHTED to see that West Indian food has FINALLY made it to the main stream supermarkets! Forget the product itself, see the bigger picture. Black people have been part of modern British culture for nearly 70 years and whilst the nation LOVES Asian food it has not quite embraced Caribbean cooking in the same way. The real question for me is "Why has it taken 70 years to get a beloved West Indian classic in a tin and on the shelf of Tesco when there are over 1.9m (I bet... you thought it was more!) Black people in the UK (our numbers are declining don't believe what UKIP tell you!). It's been a long time since I have eaten Ravioli, Chili, Curry and numerous other pasta concoctions out of tins. So I personally see Tesco stocking Jerk Chicken in a tin as an absolute triumph for the Black community. NO it's not going to taste like Jerk George's Jerk Chicken that you get at Carnival! But then again Irish Stew in a can does not taste like the Saturday all day boiling delights created by Mrs O'Doherty and Curry in a Can does not taste like the Tuesday spice fest of the Patel family from my childhood. That's not the point! No one in their right mind expects food in a can to taste homemade!!! That's not it's purpose and NEVER claims to be more than it is. But the revolution has got to start somewhere and Caribbean black people have been left way behind our Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Polish immigrant cousins for long enough! As a community we have to see the bigger picture and embrace the change. As we society becomes more integrated we can all to easily lose our heritage in the beautiful melting pot of embraced diversity. How many 2nd and 3rd generation Caribbean people know how to make Jerk? If we don't get the food of our people out to the masses it will die out as other cultures establish their culinary foothold above us. Caribbean food is healthy and delicious, it deserves to have its profile raised. Supermarkets are starting to recognise this and when they do that means there's money to be made! An opportunity is being created right now for the Caribbean food industry. Move over Chicken Tikka, Jerk was here before you! PS! Hopefully Jerk House products will b available to YOU! in your local supermarket in the near future ­¤żö
