Anita Gindha, 22, was 8 and half months pregnant when she was strangled to death at her house in East London, on 19th February 2003.
Anita had fled an “arranged marriage” to build her family on love with her husband. Two years later, when she was just weeks away from giving birth to her second child, she was strangled to death in front of her toddler son.
Palwinder Dhillon, an elderly illegal immigrant living in Walsall, West Midlands who was a former employee of Anita’s hus...band and also a friend of her family was accused of her murder.
Her husband found her when he returned from work with their 19-month-old son crying besides her.
On 21 May 2004, Palwinder Singh Dillon was found guilty of her murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 16 years.

Islamic faith marriages are not valid under English law, the court of appeal has ruled, in a blow to thousands of Muslim women who have no rights when it comes to divorce. The court of appeal has confirmed that Nikah marriages are legally “non-marriages”.
In addition, its important that Muslim couples undergo a civil marriage to make their marriages legal and to give women protection under the law.

A Birmingham man who beat and treated his niece like a slave has been convicted of trying to force her into a marriage against her will in Pakistan.
This is the 4th prosecution and 5th conviction of forced marriage since the law became a criminal offence in 2014. Uncle and Aunt will be sentenced this coming Friday. Safeguarding is the overriding decision when it comes to victim safety, however it’s also important to use the law when necessary to send out a strong message to p...erpetrators and empower many more victims to come forward.
In 2019, the Karma Nirvana helpline received 118 cases where uncle and auntie were key perpetrators, reinforcing point how victims can face multiple perpetrators. As this case highlights, Honour Based Abuse can overlap with other offences like Trafficking and Modern Slavery.
Today, we are in Birmingham with our final roadshow alongside our survivors, Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police. We continue to raise awareness with our partners and instil confidence in challenging honour based abuse.

Karma Nirvana is striving to change the landscape for victims and survivors of #HonourBasedAbuse and #ForcedMarriage. In 2020, we aim to get HBA prioritised nationally.
Our plans with the Child Marriage Bill will continue to ensure parental consent is removed in the UK and any child should not be contemplating marriage. Opportunities for volunteers will begin this year and we will be releasing some details during the year.

Forced marriages and ‘honour crimes’ against women ‘spike during Christmas’.
Data from our national helpline shows the stark contrast with victims of #HonourBasedAbuse and #ForcedMarriage “slipping through the net” before and during Christmas holidays in comparison with the Summer and Easter holidays. Calls have increased by 22% after the Christmas holidays for the past two years - due to professionals mopping up cases missed over the Christmas period.
This year the helpline... supported 72 CHILDREN that were at risk of forced marriage, with the youngest cases relating to a 10 year old.
WHY?
Less public awareness and media activities, many services shutdown early over the Christmas period and as result fewer services are open to victims to seek help.

This year, the Karma Nirvana Helpline has supported 2123 cases of #HonourBasedAbuse & #ForcedMarriage. In comparison, for the whole of 2018 we received 2181 cases. (2019 excludes December data.)
A typical example of a case: We received a call from a college who shared safeguarding concerns for a 18 year old British Asian girl who had fled her family home having suffered HBA from her parents and extended family and was now staying with a friend in the same town. Concerns wer...e raised when it transpired that the girls fathers were friends leaving the victim at increased risk of being found by her family.
KN contacted the police whose immediate response was to collect the victim from the address she was staying at and placing her in emergency accommodation. KN kept the victim updated with what action was being taken and working jointly with the police we ensured the victim was safeguarded appropriately and housed into safe accommodation.

This year, over 25,000 minutes of Emotional Support has been provided to victims and survivors of #HonourBasedAbuse & #ForcedMarriage on the Karma Nirvana Helpline.
Mia made her first contact 9 months ago and has spoken with the helpline team over 50 times to date. Mia was going through court proceedings, so both emotional and practical support was provided by the helpline team. Mia required a lot of emotional support due to her not receiving the adequate support from other ...agencies. She made 12 calls to the helpline that lasted 30 minutes, 6 of which were over 40 minutes.
The helpline team provided the support for Mia to now receive therapeutic support through a local agency, to address her anxiety which has increased due to her experience of Honour Based Abuse. Mia continues to receive support from the helpline but is living a life away from abuse.
