This week is Organ Donation week and our teams have been raising awareness of the work that happens each and every day in our hospitals to save lives.
Here in Leeds we transplant livers, kidneys and corneas. We also performed the UK’s first hand transplants.
Patients who agree to donate their organs in one of our hospitals can benefit up to 9 other people by donating their kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, small bowel and corneas.
... Transplant services are really important to us at LTHT and last year 361 life changing transplants were performed in our hospitals.
This week, please share your organ donation wishes with your friends and family.
You can learn more about our Be a Hero campaign and sign the Organ Donation Register on our website www.leedsth.nhs.uk/be-a-hero.

We love to celebrate the successes of our ward teams, and today we want to say a big well done to four teams who have recently reached milestones in patient safety.
Well done to J45 for going 200 days without a 2222 call (calling out a Crash Team in the event of a cardiac arrest), J21 for going 400 days without a pressure ulcer, J27 for achieving 20 days without a fall, and J89 for going 300 days (almost 400!) without a 2222 call and 329 days without a pressure ulcer.
Congratulations to all of our teams for these fantastic achievements, they really do reflect the continued hard work of our staff and their commitment to providing safe care for our patients.

Come and find out about the history of our chapel on the St James's Hospital site.
The workhouse chapel was built between 1858-61 and will be open to the public as part of the Civic Trust walk round of the Beckett Street cemetery where many occupants of the workhouse now lie.
The current St James's site already housed the Moral & Industrial Training School (opened 1848). The grade 2 listed chapel was constructed at the same time as the workhouse, 1858-61 and was designed by ...the same architects.
The extreme poverty in which the workhouse inmates lived was not matched by their chapel, which is very attractive. It is built of red brick with stone dressings in a cruciform shape. It displays carved capitals with flowers, birds and animals, the font is carved in stone, the pulpit has red and white marble shafts and an angel supports the book rest
A plaque can be seen commemorating the nurses who died between 1914-18 during the first world war and in the influenza epidemic
Opening Times Saturday 8 September: 1000-1200 Sunday 16 September: 1100-1300

Here is a great video of one of our patients, little Freddie McDonald and his brother Louie meeting two Leeds United players. Freddie received a liver transplant at Leeds Children's Hospital in June 2015 followed by a new heart valve during more major surgery.
They brothers are celebrating the new charity partnership between Children's Heart Surgery Fund and Leeds United which was announced earlier this month. The charity helps fund equipment, staff posts, resources and training for those who work on the heart wards; and support CHD patients and their families.

As part of Organ Donation week, the parents of 12-year-old Hoshi Naylor who sadly died following a road accident have told how they drew comfort from knowing that she helped others when they agreed for her organs to be donated.
Hoshi became a lifesaver following her death in January, when her kidneys, pancreas, liver and heart were donated to four people in need of a transplant.
Her mum Emma described how they received a letter from another girl who received Hoshi’s heart. Sh...e said: “Knowing another family did not have to go through what we did is wonderful to hear. Knowing that their daughter is running around and just being a kid again is fantastic.”
This Organ Donation week, talk to your family about your wishes. For more information visit: http://www.leedsth.nhs.uk/be-a-hero/ or https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/

Each and every day our teams based in the Emergency Departments (EDs) at St James's and the LGI care for and treat hundreds of people from across Leeds and the wider region.
To reflect the amazing work which takes place in these high-pressure environments, the LTHT ED team have produced this fantastic video. The four minute film, based around the theme of 'four hours' gives a brief insight into just some of the cases they see on a 24/7 basis and how they are working together to improve their processes and ensure the very best patient care.
We're sure you'll agree, it's fascinating to see how many different professionals and specialities go into a fully functioning ED.

As part of the NHS’s 70th birthday celebrations, there will be a dedicated ‘NHS70 theatre’ at the Health and Care Innovation Expo in Manchester on 5 and 6 September 2018.
Expo is the biggest NHS-led event in the calendar and includes more than 200 hours of speakers, workshops and sessions exploring the latest developments and innovations across health and social care.
Lisa Beaumont and Lobke Marsden from the play team at Leeds Children's Hospital will also be giving a worksho...p on play therapy.
Over the two days, delegates visiting the ‘NHS70 theatre’ will get to meet, and hear from, many of the inspirational people who played a key role in marking the birthday – from retired staff who worked in the NHS on the day it launched to patients who have shared their personal stories of how the NHS saved or changed their lives.
We’ll also hear from leading innovators who will offer a ‘tomorrow’s world view’ of what the NHS will look like when it reaches 100.
People visiting the theatre will be able to view exhibitions from the University of Manchester’s ‘NHS at 70: The Story of our Lives’ project and NHS England’s work with Inspiring the Future, an initiative which encourages NHS staff to give school talks.
It’s easy to register to attend Expo, simply follow the link below:
