Leeds University Officers' Training Corps Luotc - Freshers 2020/21

This weekend, YORKS OTR deployed to Whinny Hill OBUA Village in Catterick to conduct operations in built up areas.
Saturday focused on the skills and drills required in such an environment, one which the first year Officer Cadets had never been in before. Lessons on room and stairway clearance, grenade throwing, and the fortification of defensive positions set them up for the upcoming attack.
There was also a visit by the Military Education Committee of Leeds and Sheffield U...niversities, who are the vital link between the UOTC and the universities that the Officer Cadets attend.
Saturday evening, the Officer cadets withdrew to a harbour area, ready for a dawn battlegroup attack on Sunday morning. Then, at 0600, Leeds and Sheffield UOTCs launched a deliberate attack on Whinny Hill village, the scale of which was a first for many Officer Cadets.
JUO Simpson of Leeds UOTC also received the Commanding Officer’s coin for her exemplary effort as Platoon Sergeant.
A thoroughly enjoyable but also challenging end to the the year before Officer Cadets break up for Easter, ready for exams.

Last night, representatives of Barclays UK spoke to Officer Cadets of Leeds UOTC about graduate opportunities for #exforces personnel and the benefits an Army career has in the civilian job market. Both were previous Officer Cadets at Leeds UOTC, and it was great to welcome them back, and hear about their service after University in the Army and RAF.

This week, the Leeds UOTC Mixed Netball team reached the semi finals of the Army Inter Unit Mixed Netball Championships. They won all 3 pool games to win a quarter final place against Sheffield University Officers' Training Corps SUOTC. Leeds then beat Sheffield to secure a place in the semi final against Colchester. 8-8 was the score after normal time and 6 minutes extra time was played. A very tight match to which Colchester won 13-11. A fantastic achievement by all howev...er!

This evening, Reserve units from across the North were represented at Leeds UOTC, enabling Officer Cadets to see the opportunities available in the wider Army after they graduate from university. #studentlifelessordinary

This weekend, Junior Div of Leeds UOTC partook in bayonet training. This was a different experience for the Officer Cadets, teaching them how to engage with an enemy at close quarters. They also completed their Battlefield Casualty Drills (BCD) lessons and conduction an annual fitness assessment. #studentlifelessordinary

Leeds UOTC - Burns Night
Each year, Leeds UOTC hosts a night of Scottish traditions to celebrate Burns Night. Officer Cadets and Staff invite friends and family to join in the festivities, eating Haggis and bonding again before the start of the new semester, all while enjoying the music of bagpipes in the background. The event is another opportunity for all the university students to get out of their uniforms and dress up, some gents even opting to wear kilts.
One Officer Cadet said of the event, “The night was really great! Everyone is like a big family and it’s nice to wind down with like-minded people after exams."

Leeds UOTC are currently on an Adventurous Training Climbing package in Spain. Lead by 2Lt Sullivan, OCdts have had three days climbing in the Costa Blanca and one day abseiling, looking at gear placement, anchors and footwork. OCdts will return with their Rock Climbing Single Pitch Foundation (RSF) qualification. Follow our page for more updates on their trip!
