About Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a City farm in Leeds established in 1980. It's a working farm, with a wide variety of animals, that also aims to promote increased awareness of the environment and sustainability.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm Description

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a charity established in 1980 to provide a 'taste of the country' within the city boundaries. It provides educational services to disadvantaged young people and adults and offers environmental education to primary school children.

It is a working farm with a wide variety of animals, amenity and market gardens and a range of natural habitats. Many of the animals can be seen from close quarters and fresh farm eggs can be bought in the Farm Shop. There is a small play area for under 12s and the independently-run Barn Coffee Shop is also located on the Farm.

In addition to the animals, there are several woodland walks including a longer walk into the Scott Hall Copse at the far end of the Farm.

Two more big challenges taken on, this time by a team from Lloyds Banking Group - clearing one of the market garden beds overgrown with thistles just before they seed and barrowing wood chippings up the hill to complete surfacing of the woodland path. On top of that some more fence painting. Thank you so much for your hard work. DJ

The team from Leeds Building Society took on two challenges: the overgrown upper storage area and the old Rabbit Run viewing area. These tasks included bramble and nettle removal, storing retrieved polytunnel sheeting for re-use, and moving a couple of tonnes of soil. Oh, and some fence painting as well. Thank you all DJ

User

A team from the Environment Agency spent the day sorting out our storage area and cold frame yard and removing weeds from the raised bed paving area. Thank you for your hard work. DJ

User

a large team from LBG managed to get through the range of tasks set including: processing a branch removed from a tree near the main entrance, removing cut grass and mowing the orchard, cutting back overgrown trees to the Far Copse entrance, re-surfacing the woodland path, removing nettles from the fence of a viewing field, fence painting and more 'magical' wands. Thank you all. DJ

This team made big inroads into preparing the Farm for visitors to the Summer Fayre the following week. Tasks included fence painting, grass cutting, nettle removal, cut back overhanging vegetation, path clearing and making some 'magical' wands for the Summer Playscheme held every year at the start of the school holidays. thank you for your support. Another hot sunny June day and the team from RBs put in a huge effort to complete trimming back the Cornus and completed surfacing a length of path constructed by our Trainees. Thank you all DJ

User

On a hot sunny day the team from YBS removed vegetation to improve sightlines within the car park, began trimming the Cornus to 'The Avenue' and cleaned chairs to be ready for Meanwood Fest held at the Farm again this year. Thank you DJ

User

Another team from DWP visited the Farm and enthusiastically tackled all the tasks set for them including grass cutting, vegetation removal, plant propagation and feeding animals. Thank you DJ

User

Posting in July, grass cutting seems a distant memory. Nevertheless the team from Lexis Nexis put in their customary hard day of effort. Thank you. DJ

SUMMER FAYRE & DUCK RACE 2018. The winning ducks are First Duck No.88, Second Duck No.29, Third Duck No.221 and all the hampers have been collected by the lucky winners.
May I thank all of you who visited the Farm for making it a successful event - an excellent result considering the competition from another event the same day that also ended with an excellent result.
Thank you, also, to the individuals, companies and organisations who supported this event including, Asda ...Killingbeck, Casa Mia, COOP Chapel Allerton, The Deep, Habitat, Halfords, The Hungry Bear, Hyde Park Picture House, Morrisons Kirkstall, Moustache Barber Shop, Nandos Headingley, Red’s True Barbecue, Sainsbury’s Moor Allerton, and Waitrose.
I would also like to thank all the volunteers, behind the scenes and presenting the activities, without whom this event would not be possible!
I hope we see you all again next year but look out for our next event later this year. DJ

We went yesterday for the first time and had such a lovely day! Lots of animals to see and grounds to explore. Top quality food in the cafe and CHris went above and beyond to make sure the kids had a great day will defo be back!

User

We just spent the morning with our 6y, 3y and 6m old boys! They had an absolutely amazing time

User

Volunteered here today... had a fabulous day hard work but worth it. Food in cafe was gorgeous. Loved every minute.

User

This farm is fantastic for toddlers.

Lots of lovely animals to see, feed and pet. Only £2 entry and we stayed for over 3 hours. Everything close together and the cafe served great food. Good to see local produce in the shop, the farm has a fab community feel to it.

Particularly loved the friendly sheep and the cute piglets!

We highly recommend Urban Farm. We will definitely be coming back.

User

Me and my family go regularly, and gave a yearly membership which is really reasonably priced. There's a beautiful cafe and play area as well, and an extra positive - dogs on a lead are welcome too!

User

I went here today with my granddaughter. There may not be a lot of animals to see but it is a very peaceful and lovely place to visit. Looks great now all the daffodils are out. Its a great place for toddlers to run about safely x will definitely be back often x

User

Had a lovely visit to the farm this week. The whole family enjoyed it and was great value for money. Special shout out to the lovely cafe staff who gave me their recipe for the amazing vegan chocolate chip banana bread. This and the coffee are worth a trip alone! Will be back soon.

User

Great place for our toddler to be free range and explore flora and fauna. We love how close we can get to the baby animals and the playground and cafe are fab too.

User

Fantastic little place. Having passed by many times we finally made time to call in with our 3yr old son. The entry fee was really cheap compared to other similar attractions and after venturing around couldn't believe it when we looked at the time and realised we'd been there for two hours as the time had flown by.

Other than the animals there are lovely gardens, a small play park, and the cafe was superb offering a great range of organic and homemade produce.

Will definitely be back!!

User

Brilliant farm with plenty of animals to see, cafe selling food and areas with nice nature walks. I went today with my 15 month old and he loved it. It was the summer fayre so he even enjoyed getting his face painted. Would definitely recommend to people with children or even adults wanting a nice walk.

User

Brilliant day out today we forgot our sun hat for our son asked if the gift shop sold them and one of the lovely staff gave one to him so kind think the price is worth every penny you should consider rising them will defo return thanks to the lovely gent that gave us the hat never got his name

User

Beautiful place! It's obvious that the animals are incredibly well cared for and the grounds are kept in great condition. The entry prices are great value for money as is the cafe. Definitely recommend and will be visiting again!

User

User

Great place to visit. Will definitely be back soon

User

A rainy Saturday afternoon visit with my little one. For a grand total of £2 we spent about 2 hours wondering about seeing the various animals. It's a cracking little place, to my knowledge there is no cheaper place in Leeds to bring the kids to see the animals. A bag of feed was only 50p and feeding the sheep was the highlight of my little ones visit. The cafe lunch was great, and again reasonable prices. We'll be back again in the summer

User

A great place for a lovely nature walk, not many of those in Leeds! The cafe is lovely a great place to have a relaxing coffee in a lovely environment. A great place to take kids if you want them to engage is some amazing nature play and come face to face with farm animals.

User

Nice little place to take the children to.

Great care when one of our children fell over and cut her knee (although first aider should've been wearing gloves or at least washed his hands first).

Main disappointment is we wanted to purchase a few plants from the shop but couldn't because they don't take cards in the main shop.

User

Not actually a review but a question for people who have been recently - What's the cafe like now? Went last spring and thought that while the food tasted good, the choice was quite narrow and the prices high for what they served. However I believe that the cafe has been redone since then - any recent recent reviews? We're going later this week and would like to eat there if it is decent!

User

Sorry to say this as it is a charity . We saw everything in 10 mins. The park is tiny . We wanted to eat at the cafe it was heaving and their were no menus anywhere . We had to park nearby as the small car park was full . All in all not a great experience. I had a 15 yr old and 3 yr old and neither liked it .
