About Mitchells Furniture Auction

Mitchells Furniture Hall holds weekly general household sales, quarterly fine art sales and two sporting goods sales and toy sales a year.

Mitchells Furniture Auction Description

Mitchells have been holding auctions in Cockermouth for over 160 years and we’re still going strong today with Household Auctions every Thursday.

Mitchells started life in 1849 when Robinson Mitchell, the youngest son of a local clog and boot maker, began selling furniture in a weekly sale close to Cockermouth’s Main Street, moving to a larger wooden shed on The Fairfield as the business grew. Fed up with haggling over prices, he announced he would start taking open bids from would-be customers and so the modern method of auctioneering was born which is now used throughout the country.

Mitchells was registered as a limited company in 1873 and has continued to evolve over the last 140 years, introducing Estate Agency and Land Agency divisions. In 2002 it relocated its Livestock and Land Agency businesses to an agricultural park on the outskirts of Cockermouth to allow the firm to expand. This also made way for Sainsbury’s supermarket to be built in the town centre and some of the features of the original livestock auction mart are reflected in the design of the supermarket building.

Our saleroom is without doubt one of the most interesting and atmospheric in the country. The octagonal auction ring – converted from a refurbished cattle market – is surrounded by tiered wooden bench seating which makes it very easy to follow the sale and see what’s going on. It’s an ideal space for selling household goods by auction and is very exciting to watch and take part. The wider saleroom has plenty of space for displaying goods for easy viewing before the sale, making it an enjoyable experience for people to browse through the hundreds of lots for sale each week.

We have been a couple of times for a day out! It’s a lovely old fashioned auction house with most lots going through the ‘Bull Ring’. We like the interaction between the staff who are obviously very dedicated and extremely helpful.

On one of our visits the auctioneer carried out most of his business in a lovely sing song voice.

There are boxes of bargains to be had if you like that kind of thing and always household appliances going for a song. Furniture is also very reasonable and can be collected on Saturday mornings which we found very convenient.

Purchased a wall map to put up in an office. Really pleased with the maps and received great service. Mitchells were even able to help arrange delivery. Many thanks!

I regularly follow the auction listings on the Mitchell’s Facebook website.

Spotted a leather sofa I liked. Viewed sofa on the Wednesday after I’d finished work (they are open until 7pm on the evening before a sale). Placed a maximum reserve bid as I knew I wouldn’t be able to attend.

My reserve bid won at 3pm on the Thursday. The sofa was delivered at 4.30pm the same day!

All Mitchell’s office staff involved were fabulous, so helpful and friendly given that I’d not used the service before. Clearly explained the process which was really simple.

The two delivery chaps were outstanding. Salt of the Earth and great craic. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Both a credit to the Company (please pass on my thanks).

A massive endorsement from me. A great Cumbrian business and one I wholeheartedly recommend.

After clearing out my sons room of toys and Lego I was ready to take them to the tip, then I was advised to take them to the auction. I made over £100 on what I thought was just junk! Great service and a great auction! Thank you!

A vital hub within Cockermouth. The staff are courteous and knowledgeable, always prepared to help with any query regardless of how inane.

The sales vary depending on many factors, the normal household sale brings in dealers and people just looking for a bargain.

The catalogue sale is very high profile and brings in people from all over the country, the lots often go for considerably more than expected.

The other lesser known sale is the sporting goods, which by all accounts has a very good local following.

People visit Mitchell's more as returning friends than customers.
