Today we're sharing original music by Wakefield singer/songwriter Ali Bullivent which was commissioned by the Museum.
The resulting lyrical song cycle is inspired by a short story by Sid Chaplin, 'The Thin Seam' (1950), which follows the life of a miner from Durham who chooses to return to working in the pit rather than continue his scholarship education and risk becoming alienated from his community.

We were thrilled to host a performance of ‘Remember Where you Came From’ by Yew Tree Theatre and Alan Wood last week; it was a powerful re-telling of coal mining history through song and theatre. Some of the very talented young people involved talked to us about what they had enjoyed about taking part in the performance and why it is so important for young people to know about their mining heritage:”

Today we've given a supportive send off to 4 cyclists from Pedal 4 Progress who are cycling from the National Coal Mining Museum for England here in Wakefield all the way to the National Coal Mining Museum of Germany in Bochum, Near Dortmund.
This year sees the end to deep coal mining in Germany so the trip comes at a poignant time.
They're taking with them a miners' lamp presented by the NUM and books presented by the Oaks Disaster Memorial Fund to donate to the German Minin...g Museum and to show solidarity between the UK coal mining community and German miners.
Pedal 4 Progress are cycling to raise funds for the Morning Star newspaper and it has been lovely to have supporters of the coal mining community here on site today.

Wonderful day learning about mining history. Loved the underground tour, so interesting and Dave Scott our guide (an ex miner) was very knowledgeable, inclusive and great with the kids. He answered all our questions and chatted to my very nervous son as we travelled down in the lift. Can't believe I've not been before but I will be back! Thanks 👍

User

We've just had another great day out at the National Coal Mining Museum! We visited the beach, went on the train (twice, for free!!) Said 'hello' to the pit ponies, ate our picnic, enjoyed the nature trail, played in the play area and enjoyed our time with friends and all for the cost of £5 to park. This place is right on our doorstep and it's a brilliant place for children and adults, we decided before our visit that we weren't going to do any of the indoor activities with the weather being so nice, but if the weather is bad you could still enjoy lots inside. Well worth a visit.

User

We visited today and did the underground tour. A must. I always knew that working in the mines would be a terrible job, but didn’t realise just how it must have been. Our guide Dave was very good, informative and entertaining as there were some small children on our tour. There is lots to see and do as well as the tour. Play area and stables. We finished our day out with a late lunch in the cafe.

User

We visited on Tuesday 31st July. This was our first ever visit and we loved it. We did the underground tour with Dave, who was very entertaining and knowledgeable. Having former miners hosting the tours is a great idea, as you get to hear about their own experiences too. This is a top Yorkshire day out. Thanks for a great day.

User

Visited here today with my boyfriend and we loved it! We went on the underground tour and it was taken by Neil! He has such a great way of explaining how everything worked and such a good sense of humour that worked for both kids and adults, it was amazing seeing what the working conditions were like back in the days and it’s great to actually have tour guides that have experienced it and have such passion in their job, will definitely recommend.

User

On behalf of my Auntie who took her niece to the Beach.

What a great time we had. Fantastic facilities, lovely clean toilets and the unlimited free train rides whichis a great experience for all. At £5 a car and all the facilities I felt it’s unbelievable value for money. A cheap and fun packed day for all

User

Myself and my 5 year old son, went twice this week firstly on Thursday to the beach and playground. Then re visited today to take a tour of the pit. Everything was excellent. The tour was brilliant and really interesting. My son was unsure at first but our guide Martin was fantastic and really put my son at ease. We loved it. Great work guys it's great to showcase the workings of a once thriving industry

User

My second visit, brought my 2 granddaughters and my twin boys. We only lasted 10 minutes down the mine before my youngest granddaughter needed a wee. The 5 of us had to come back to the surface, this wasn't an issue for me but I'm really sorry for holding up the other people in our tour. I have promised the 3 older children we will come back in a few weeks. Wonderful and witty staff too

User

Me and my kids had a fantastic day today, it was lovely seeing the pit ponies and Finn “the giant” and the horse on the field. But the best part of the day was going down the pits, my kids thoroughly enjoyed that, I have to say our guide leader Richard “Rich Tea” was amazing he had so much knowledge & experience to share with adults & children. I would definitely recommend the underground tour, it’s a little fun adventure with interesting information xx

User

Loved it , went with my dad and little boy . My dad worked down the pit for 35 years and it was great to see him sharing memories with his grandson on the tour . The staff are friendly and the food in the cafe was excellent too

User

Its brilliant for the kids fab park , beach , train rides , museum, ... kids have had a fab day .. whats really good is not many places you do not have to pay only charge is for the car park and that goes towards the running of the place . ... plus the staff are so helpful and-go over and above board to give you information and help 5 stars is well deserved

User

I went with my father-in-law as a belated fathers day gift. He is retired now but held senior positions down various pits as an engineer across a career spanning 35yrs. He knows his stuff. We both absolutely loved it. The tour was great the guide was really knowledgeable and engaging adding his own bits of humour in the mix.

I would recommend this to anyone young or old it's a great day for kids as there is loads to do as well as the underground tour.

Give it a go - I can't imagine that you wouldn't enjoy it

User

I went there as part of a huge party of almost 300 people for my works Company Day. Excellent! Although we were in the conference room for half of the day. We did all get to do the Pit Tour if we so wished. Our guide Martin was great. Really knowledgeable engaging and fun. Colleague that didn't go down't pit went on't nature trail and through the museum on the surface. A great day had by all I think and will be returning with my children very soon.

User

Had an amazing day out yesterday, it was the first time we visited the museum and the tour of the pit was so much more than we expected, the guy leading was an absolute legend (Steve) the kids were so interested he made it a brilliant experience, highly recommend going,we will be returning in the near future!

User

Had a wonderful day here today with my 4&1 year old. The staff were amazing and very helpful (special thank you to the member of train staff who found my son's hat and brought it to us). All the activities were great fun and at the bargain price of £5 for the 3 of us on everything all day .

User

Great place to take the kids. Plenty to do and a mean bacon sarnie. Friendly staff and a great outdoor play area and giant sand pit- all for price of £5 parking all day. Nature walk worth a go too.

User

First visit here today with my two children aged 6 and 3. What a fabulous day we have had. Kids loved the adventure playground and the 'beach' - a full days worth of activities all for the price of £5! Found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and great with the kids - we will definately be back for another visit!

User

Amazing experience. Visited for the first time yesterday and the kids are still talking about it and can't wait to re-visit. The pit tour was amazing and our tour guide was brilliant with the kids and adults too. Lots to do on site to fill a whole day. Our only regret was not arriving earlier as we ran out of time and hadn't seen/done everything.

Recommending to everyone young and old

User

Absolutely amazing. The tour guide Martin was a true Yorkshire diamond. The interaction with the mini miners was superb and made the trip underground a pleasure, interesting and frequently humorous.. You are taken sequentially through a mine’s time line and the kids are occasionally allowed to take an alternative route via little passageways, which they all thought was great!! This is right on my doorstep and I can't believe I've left it this long to visit. Five stars all the way
