School Of Creative Arts

About School Of Creative Arts

Creative Arts at Leeds City College provides specialist training and education in creative qualifications in further education.

School Of Creative Arts Description

We provide full-time arts education to over 1, 000 students every year. We offer arts courses from Level 1 through to BA Honours Degrees. If you are successful in gaining a place on one of our specialist courses we will work with you to develop your creative skills and prepare you for the next big step – either to university, drama school, art college or the world of work.

The school is divided into two departments:

The Digital & Visual Arts Department offers specialist practical full-time study across art and design, games design and development, graphic design, app development and photography.

The Media & Performance Production Department offers full-time study across acting, film and tv, dance, journalism, musical theatre and performance as well as backstage arts courses in technical theatre and theatrical costume, hair and make up.

Facilities at our two delivery campuses – Park Lane and Technology – include a working theatre, dance studios, rehearsal spaces, print and animation workshops, photography and film studios and an entire floor dedicated to games design and development. We utilise Macs as well as PCs and students develop skills in a range of industry standard software including Adobe Suite, 3D Max, Maya and Unreal.

Our staff team is made up of highly qualified professionals with a depth of experience in the working worlds of theatre, dance, fine art, graphics, web design, television, radio and media. They will push you hard because they are aware that progression to work and to higher education within the creative arts is only appropriate for those students who are willing to go ‘the extra mile’.

The majority of our successful Level 3 students progress to university whilst others have gone on to work for design companies, in backstage production, TV production, and as performing artists across a range of disciplines.

Meet Jess Ward. Jess studied Dance with the School of Creative Arts, later attending Salford University where she graduated with a First Class BA Honours in Dance. Jess has worked with Hawk Dance Theatre, as well as Company Chameleon, she's also performed in front of 4,000+ spectators at the First Direct Arena.
We're looking forward to welcoming Jess back to the School of Creative Arts early next year to lead a workshop with our dancers and give an insight into life after college in the dance industry.

For all who study in Visual Arts, you'll probably know of Akeelah. Akeelah is not only an integral part of our team at Leeds City College, but also a full-time practising artist.
Akeelah has recently been working on a project at Union 105 with East Street Arts called The Ultiverse, with the concept to create tactile and immersive installations through the use of light and sound.
You're able to check out Akeelah's work at The Tetley on Friday 5 October as part of Light Night Leeds.

Head of Visual & Digital Arts, Kevin O’Hare, remains an active participant in the field of art. For over 10 years, Kevin has been pursuing a project he calls Plastic Games, inspired by Connect4.
He has a scrapbook of Connect4 prints that he has created and carries with him everywhere and plays the game with strangers and friends. If he wins the game, he keeps the artwork and if the other player wins, they get to keep it.
Kevin will be exhibiting some of his work at the Brunswick in Leeds on the week commencing 4 September from 2pm.

We’re launching a new biannual publication, BLANK, which encompasses the full spectrum of creative disciplines, from visual and performing arts, to film and computer game design.
The first issue is open for submissions around the theme of ‘DIY’, and invites both creative projects and written responses.
Selected submissions will supplement the exhibition programme at our new gallery at Quarry Hill Campus which will open in September 2019.

We're absolutely delighted to be involved in the Leeds Piano Trial as part of Leeds International Piano Competition! Both teachers and students collaborated on the design inspired by Barbara Hepworth and the Yorkshire Dales to create this imaginative art work which is now situated in the Merrion Centre until 15th September.

First things first, we hope you’ve all enjoyed your summer break! We've had a pretty busy summer ourselves... Deer Shed Festival in July, where we hosted lots of creative workshops (and topped up our tan whilst listening to their great line up!). We're currently taking part in the Leeds International Piano Trail, where art teachers alongside students created a magnificent artwork on a piano inspired by Barbara Hepworth and the Yorkshire Dales, which is now situated in the Mer...rion Centre - take a look if you're passing by! Lastly, for the second year running, Explosive our urban dance crew will be taking to the main stage at the Leeds West Indian Carnival towards the end of the month.
Anyway that's enough about us, here's some key enrolment information for those of you joining us in September!
