Silverstone Classic Description

Staged at the home of the British Grand Prix, the annual Silverstone Classic is one of the world's biggest classic motor racing festivals. The event has wide family appeal and its central England location together with Silverstone’s long sporting pedigree and state-of-the-art facilities make it the ideal venue for show-goers of all generations. It's a three-day summer festival savouring the very best of historic racing, huge displays of classic cars, a Shopping Village, fun fair and live music from headline acts.

Please note: following all the latest Government advice, we have reached the inevitable conclusion that we will need to cancel the 2020 due to COVID19. Looking ahead to our provisional dates for 2021, the dates for your diary are: 30 July – 1 August. As usual, these will remain provisional until the dates for the British Grand Prix are ratified by the FIA (usually at the start of December) but we hope that this helps with planning for now. We look forward to huge celebrations with you all in 2021.

Another truly significant car coming under the Silverstone Auctions’ hammer at the Classic next month is the iconic Alan Mann prepared Ford Lotus Cortina in which Sir John Whitmore dominated the 1965 European Touring Car Championship.
Sir John also shared the car with his close friend Jack Sears to win the coveted Nürburgring 6 Hour race setting a new lap record in the process. With such an incredible pedigree, it’s expected to generate huge interest and comes with a £200,000+ estimate.

Who better to feature on ‘Mini Monday’ than Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis – the extraordinary genius behind the diminutive game-changing marvel. Alec was born in Turkey to Greek and German parents but moved to the UK as a teenager.
Having earned his spurs working for Humber and Alvis, Issigonis was recruited by BMC to design a new smaller car in the wake of fuel rationing post the Suez Crisis. His brainchild – the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor – was launched in August 1957 and the rest, as they say, is history.
At the Classic two record-breaking races with full-capacity 58-car grids of pre ’66 Minis will celebrate the 60th anniversary of that mega milestone in motoring history. We can’t wait…

Last weekend’s sun-drenched Motorsport Celebration meeting at Thruxton whetted appetites for next month’s Classic – the retro-race line-up included several of the grids coming to Silverstone including Woodcote and Stirling Moss Trophies plus the Historic Touring Car Challenge.
Mustangs and Lotus Cortinas will be renewing their battles at the Classic, too, in Saturday’s crowd-pleasing Trans Atlantic Trophy showdown.

Here’s a tasty treat for F1 fans on a non-GP Sunday: the stunning Shadow DN5 as raced in 1974/5 seasons by Jean-Pierre Jarrier and by Gregor Fisken at last year’s Classic.
There’ll be lots more equally iconic seventies GP cars racing in the two races for the Sir Jackie Stewart Trophy for FIA Masters Historic Racing Formula One at Silverstone come the end of July.

The Maserati Club always puts on a great display of Italian exotica at the Classic. This year, the legendary Trident will be celebrating a number of key anniversaries with a special track parade on Sunday...

How’s this for a bit of incredible kit coming under the Silverstone Auctions hammer at the Classic: a sensational 1986 Metro 6R4 Group B rally car with just seven miles on the clock. It’s #189 of the 200 built and is still coated in factory wax and comes with its original plastic seat covers! What do you think it will fetch?

Tin-top titans tussling at the Classic...
The Historic Touring Car Challenge is sure to be another crowd-pleaser in July. It recreates all the great bumper-to-bumper retro action from the #BTCC and European Touring Car Championships between 1966 and 1990… including the Jaguars, BMWs and Capris as locked in battle here!

What’s not to like about a pair of Frogeyes? Topically, the Austin-Healey Sprite was launched by BMC in Monte Carlo just a few days after Maurice Trintignant had won the 1958 Monaco GP racing a Cooper T45 for Rob Walker.
The headlights were originally designed to be flipped back when not in use (a feature subsequently used by Porsche on the 928) but cost cutting by BMC put an end to that – a decision that gave meant the Sprite had a pair of permanently upright headlights and thus its enduring cute appeal and affectionate ‘frogeye’ tag.

Jackie Stewart will be back behind the wheel of his 1969 British Grand Prix winning Matra Ford at the Classic celebrating the 50th anniversary of that famous victory and raising funds for Race Against Dementia Fellowships via Alzheimer's Research UK. For those of you who weren’t around back in 1969, here’s a short Pathé news report from back in the day…

"Chevron, Ralt, March, Lola, Maurer, Reynard, Toj, AGS… to the wider world such names might not mean a great deal, but to anyone steeped in motor racing they represent a glorious, bygone age, a time when Europe – Britain in particular – was speckled with specialist manufacturers whose primary function was to build racing cars..."

It’s Wheeler Dealer Wednesday! TV star Mike Brewer will be casting his eyes over an intriguing cocktail of cars during his Car Clinics between the races at the Classic and Nish Khambhaita’s 1971 Datsun 510 certainly ticks that box.
This rare model was bought in June 2017 after a long search and, as tribute to his father’s competition days in the tough East African Safari Rally in a similar car during the sixties and seventies, Nish has restored the Datsun in rally trim similar to his dad’s old rally car.
