About Spaniel Aid Uk

To help advise owners of the dangers of advertising their dogs on internet selling sites and to help take into our care dogs whose welfare concerns us

Spaniel Aid Uk Description

We are a group of Cocker and English Springer Spaniel owners and lovers who have become increasingly concerned by the number of these wonderful dogs being offered for sale or even worse, free to a good home, on internet selling sites. Our aim is to advise owners of the dangers of this, help and advise owners who genuinely have to re home their dogs of better alternatives, encourage people to relinquish to rescue and take into our care any dogs whose welfare we are concerned about.

In October 2016, we became a UK Registered Charity here for the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of dogs namely but not exclusively spaniels, who are abandoned, stray or otherwise in need of care and attention. We provide and assist in the provision of rescuing, rehoming and fostering of these dogs and treat and care for them where necessary.

When we see a ‘free to a good home’ dog advertisement, as well as any that are £150 or less, we will email, message or call and offer to help by taking the dog in to be fostered and subsequently adopted. Some people don’t reply, some people can be a little bit rude, but there are some who are simply grateful for the help and advise and it is these that make it all worth while.

If you are still not convinced about fostering please read this from one of our fosterers Lyn ❤️❤️
So Solley is ready for adoption! I have very mixed feelings about it and it got me thinking of dogs that have passed through here and fostering in general. I’ve had them all, the ginger ninja, the guarder, the biters, the shadow chaser, the man hater, the child hater. Some dogs made me smile when they arrived and some when they left.
No doubt about it fostering can be hard, dogs... arrive with issues of varying degrees. Even those rare ones without issues can take time to settle with your own dogs (and sometimes they never do). Some issues you know of in advance, some come as a complete surprise (nb: not all owners are entirely honest).
Household dynamics have to shift & routines change. My husband works from home and is on the phone or video conferencing from 8-6, so if we get a barker I am pretty much confined to the house during the day (except for dog walks). A dog that doesn’t settle easily at night affects the whole family (especially policeman son who works shifts), so nights sleeping on the sofa to keep the peace are commonplace. Helping the new dog settle while ensuring your own don’t feel left out can be a challenge too.
But, sitting here now with Solley resting his head in my lap, I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. He was a stray (probably an escapee from a travellers site) who had been collected from the pound by a fellow fosterer a week earlier. His coat was matted and stained yellow where he had slept in his own urine, he was exceptionally thin, he had callouses on his elbows from concrete floors. He was so frightened of everything, he wouldn’t take a treat from your hand & he would stress wee if you so much as looked at him.
Now Week 3 and he’s a different dog, still a little nervous but no longer “dribbles” when he walks towards you, he is very affectionate, his recall is excellent, he responds to his new name, has learnt some basic commands. And now he needs his forever home and my job’s done !
So, if you have signed up to foster, just do it. Don’t wait for the “right” dog, anyone of them could be your Solley. It’s a wonderful feeling when your dog goes to a new home and you see them finally settled. No, it won’t all be easy but the SAUK team & fosterers are amazing and are always at the end of the phone to help, and if all else fails there’s always Gin........
THANK YOU

We are more than ever being asked to take difficult dogs. Dogs that resource guard or have bitten or that don't get on with other dogs. In order to help these dogs we need more dog free and /or experienced foster homes. Dogs with no issues are easily placed but we pride ourselves on trying to help dogs that others can't or won't. If you think you could foster one of these dogs then please fill in a foster application form and we will give you a call. Current dogs needing t...hese sort of homes are
Alfie male springer aged 5 Nelson male show cocker aged 3 Lucy female cocker aged 2 1/2 Oscar male cocker aged 5 Findlay male springer aged 12 months Amber female working cocker aged 5
One of the main reasons we read about people not wanting to foster is that they would never be able to hand the dog over to a new owner. Well you don't have to :) All our fosterers get first refusal to adopt their foster dog . Call it a perk of the job ;)

DOGS NEEDING HOMES
ROSIE (SA1940)

Other Pets: She has shown no interest in horse, alpaca, cattle, pigs
Bitten : Yes A dog in previous home guarding food
Behaviour issues : Separation anxiety, Nervous
Medical issues: very slight heart murmur
Rosie in three words inquisitive, affectionate and clever. This lovely little show cocker was very much loved but due to circumstances she wasn't getting what she needed to thrive. Rosie has some anxiety issues much of these are related to food, getting over excited about any activity that involves food from opening the fridge to doing the washing up. She gets upset that she might miss a chance to get something to eat and will steal food. She needs a clear set of rules so that she isn't confused, this is already much improved. Rosie has been taught various tricks, walks nicely on lead and would benefit from plenty of exercise to burn off her energy. Sadly the "trick" of not jumping up on everyone has not been taken on-board. She is generally playful towards other dogs but needs to learn some doggy manners to understand when a dog is saying they don't want to play, it does not mean jump up and bark at them some more. Because of this she may well be happy as an only dog (with playmates) or with playful confident dog(s) who will show her how to behave. With all that activity Rosie wants an undisturbed space of her own to relax. Rosie currently has a blanket covered crate, door kept open, as her safe haven that she will take herself to when she needs time to herself or sleep. We know she particularly dislikes being disturbed when sleeping, she might resemble a cuddly soft toy but does not want to be picked up and hugged like one especially at night for this reason any children in the home would need to be at least in teens and no sleeping on the bed. Rosie can be quite the Diva if she is hurt or thinks something might hurt, eg a bramble caught in her fluff she is quite loud, worse if she thinks you are watching! She will sing if left alone but does the same if we are there and she is not getting the food she thinks she should have. Clearly is not used to being left but will settle and if she is already settled won't even notice that we have gone. Although in time she would probably get used to being left at the moment she needs somebody around much more. If you can offer Rosie the chance to be a dog, rather than a cuddly toy, with a calm home, a clear set of boundaries and plenty of play she will be the sweetest, loving, affection dog you could ask for.
Rosie is neutered chipped vaccinated wormed and flead and adoption is subject to meet and greet homecheck and adoption fee. Applications via forms section of website please

DOGS NEEDING HOMES
MURPHY (SA1931)
Age Nearly 8 Years
... Breed: Cocker
Location : Sleaford NG34 Please be aware you will need to travel twice to this location.
Adoption fee: £150
IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR NEW HOME:
Children: Yes teen plus
Other Dogs: Yes
OK as an only dog : No
Cats: Yes
Other Pets: Yes horses
Bitten : No
Behaviour issues : Separation anxiety
Medical issues: Some stiffness in the hips, left knee cap slightly enlarged
Murphy is a really sweet 8yr old working cocker. He’s a very busy little person who loves to be outside always checking all the scents in the garden. He’s fine with all other dogs whether here at home or out on a walk. He’s not phased by the horse or excited by the cat. Murphy isn’t all that interested in toys, he will have a game of tuggy and enjoys scenting games. I think the more time spent with him his fun side will emerge and he may be more interested in toys. Loves to go out for walks and loves water !! He may pull for the first few minutes but then settles. He’s good in the car but travels best in a crate in the boot, he tends to get a bit anxious on the back seat and tries to hide under the passenger seat. His recall is good but he is afraid of fireworks and shooting and will cling to you for reassurance. He can get anxious if walking by a busy road, he just looks a little worried and relaxes as soon as away from that situation. Murphy is ok when we leave him for a few hours with our other dogs and at night he would settle in his crate when we went to bed but after a few hours anxiety would kick in. He didn’t bark or whine just desperately trying to get out of the crate panting and shaking. So now he sleeps in the crate in our bedroom not a peep all night. I feel Murphy would be happiest in a home that wasn’t too busy with another calm dog with clear boundaries set as to what was expected of him. He’s very affectionate loves a good cuddle, he has been known to guard but not food or toys, and always happy to meet new people. He will remind you when it’s food or exercise time sometimes with a woof but more often with a grumbly sound. It has been a pleasure to have this boy in our home and feel sure he will be a fantastic companion for anyone wanting an active friend .

DOGS NEEDING HOMES
CHESTER (SA1941)
Age 2 1/2 Years
... Breed: Cockerpoo
Location : Fife Please be aware you will need to travel twice to this location.
Adoption fee: £250
IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR NEW HOME:
Children: Yes teen plus
Other Dogs: Yes
OK as an only dog : No
Cats: Not tested
Other Pets: Not tested
Bitten : Yes in previous home
Behaviour issues : Guarding, toys, beds etc, Nervous
Medical issues: None
Here is Chester, a fun loving obedient dog who needs a home with experienced owners, one of whom ideally is home most of the day, and a calm but playful dog to help him over come his nervousness and anxiety. Chester came to us with a previous history of biting. We believe this was as a result of his nervousness and inexperienced owners in a busy house of children, therefore a house with teenagers or no children is a must. While he has been in foster we have seen a remarkable change in him from the frightened stressed and anxious dog he was into a fun loving, affectionate and inquisitive boy. He does still have a slight habit of resource guarding, namely our shoes, whilst guarding he may give the odd grumble but nothing further. The best way we have found is just to ignore him and he soon comes looking for you, this will require further work. Chester is an obedient , intelligent dog, a pleasure to walk on the lead, and his recall is 90% good. He loves going for long walks, is a definite water baby, travels well and enjoys attention. He would excell at obedience or agility training. He hates a crate and has slept in the kitchen with our dog in his own bed very happily. Chester will make a super family dog in the right home and we will be sad to see him go.
Chester is neutered chipped vaccinated wormed and flead and adoption is subject to meet and greet homecheck and adoption fee. Applications via forms section of website please

DOGS NEEDING HOMES
OLLY (SA1935)
Age 6 Years
... Breed: Springer
Location : Sudbury Suffolk, Please be aware you will need to travel twice to this location.
Adoption fee: £250
IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR NEW HOME:
Children: Yes teen plus
Other Dogs: Yes
OK as an only dog : Yes
Cats: No
Other Pets: No barks at horses
Bitten : Yes Previous owner bitten when Olly was hit, foster bitten when foster tried to examine his leg
Behaviour issues : None
Medical issues: None
This is Olly he needs a home with experienced owners that will listen to the guidance given by the foster family. When Olly came into foster he became quite stressed and defensive therefore he will need time to adjust to his new home. There are a few things he's not happy with and can nip at your hand or growl, having said this he loves people and being fussed, cuddles on the sofa and bully rubs. Olly will only be rehomed to a family with older teenagers or no children due to his bite history. Olly can live as an only dog or with another dog he can be very vocal and rough when playing so the other dog/s in the house must be used to this as it can be mistaken for aggression, he can be left but not for more than 4 hours and hasn't shown any destructive behaviour, he sleeps downstairs on is bed at night time, good recall he doesn't really go very far and looks back to check your still there, when meeting other dogs on a walk he can snap at them if they come right up into his face but most of the time he greets them with a wagging tail and wants to play, Olly is very food driven and spins and barks with excitement when receiving treats, he will bark when someone is at the door or he hears another dog barking but is learning to settle quicker, he doesn't like raised voices and responds better to treats and a gentle voice, with time, love and understanding Olly will make a wonderful companion
Olly is neutered chipped vaccinated wormed and flead and adoption is subject to meet and greet homecheck and adoption fee. Applications via forms section of website please

DOGS NEEDING HOMES
ELLIE (SA1927)
... Age 4 Years
Breed: Cocker
Location : Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire Please be aware you will need to travel twice to this location.
Adoption fee: £250
IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR NEW HOME:
Children: Yes 5 plus
Other Dogs: Yes
OK as an only dog : No
Cats: Not tested
Other Pets: Not tested
Bitten : No
Behaviour issues : None
Medical issues: None
Ellie is a gorgeous show cocker spaniel who came to us through no fault of her own. Her home family circumstances changed and she was given to SAUK. She initially arrived with her mother who went to another suitable foster home. In the first 3 days Ellie was nervous, timid and followed my husband everywhere. She was scared of my placid 2 spaniels and they gave her a wide birth. She soon settled into our routine and now acknowledges them and enjoys their company but I wouldn’t say she directly plays with either of them despite my puppy’s attempts and offers. Ellie's sole aim in life I think is to gain belly rubs and snuggles. She has no behaviour issues we have seen except she barks at the tv (this may not bother some people but worth a mention) mainly at those pesky meerkat adverts and animals especially cats and dogs. On a few occasions if she won’t settle we ask her get into her crate and she will stay in there for a few minutes till she settles, she does this really well. She will also bark at the door if someone knocks or hears a noise but soon settles. Despite being a precious pampered pooch she loves being out and about, her recall is a little bit hit and miss. She is better when she is with my husband! She could spend ages scenting when out on the plain, loves puddles etc. Ellie is going to make a fantastic pet for someone and I would suggest a family as she loves all the extra fuss kids can bring. She is crate trained and loves it, she takes herself off to the kitchen to the biscuit cupboard to let you know when she wants to settle in for the night. When she sees you in the morning it’s like she hasn’t seen anyone in days. Straight into the bed for cuddles. Ellie was raw fed but we have changed her onto our dogs food which is forthglade trays. She’s not a big fan of toys or treats, loves little biscuits etc but no bones etc. We will miss her dearly as she is a fab girl.
Ellie is neutered chipped vaccinated wormed and flead and adoption is subject to meet and greet homecheck and adoption fee. Applications via forms section of website please

Percy is a sweet natured handsome boy.
Very gentle with my children and he loves playing tug and chasing a ball with my dog.
He definitely needs to be rehomed with a dog for company and for his confidence to grow. He does get nervous meeting new people and out on dog walks, he tries to turn back when he sees other dogs coming toward him but with encouragement he soon realises that everything is fine, his confidence is growing daily. He really is a lovely boy who is starting to shine and now needs to find his forever home.
Percy is not neutered due to his age and will be rehomed with a contract to do so and not with unspayed females. He is chipped vaccinated wormed and flead andadoption is subject to meet and greet homecheck andadoption fee. Applications via forms section of website please

NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN PLEASE :)
DOG FREE FOSTER WITH A VIEW TO ADOPT FOR GWEN
Gwen is a 3 year old show cocker who is looking for a new home. She has Progressive Retinal Atrophy since 10 months old and as a result is going blind. She is not good with other dogs in the home , maybe contributed to by her worsening vision hence we are looking for a dog free foster home. She is also not great with dogs out the home but this is easily managed. She is absolutely fine with huma...ns and deserves her happy ever after in a home on her own where she can be the centre of attention. She is an unknown to cats so we will not be rehoming her with one and a home with older or no children is best please.
Can you be Gwens happy ever after? Please dont let her lack of vision be an issue as we have rehomed many blind dogs and they are just amazing with how they cope :)
Gwen is neutered chipped and is up to date with vaccinations and flea and worm treatments. She is currently in Kelty, Fife Ky4 but we can transport her into foster.
Applications via foster application form on website please and just note that it is for Gwen
Thank you

DOG FREE FOSTER WITH A VIEW TO ADOPT HOME NEEDED PLEASE
ALFIE
Alfie is a 5 year old springer who was in his last home for a couple of months after they took him from a bad environment. He sadly seems to have spent the last few years tied up outside with a rope and fed once a day if that. As a result he is struggling to adapt to a normal indoor home. He paces and scrounges food and can guard toys (easily managed by removing them) This lad really is beautiful and so deser...ves a chance to have a life of a normal dog. He needs dog free and someone who can give him time and patience. He is fine with dogs out and about, submissive even. He is a NO to cats and children teenage plus. He has just been castrated. He needs boundaries and stability to become the dog we know he can be.
If you could foster this boy then please fill in a foster application and put its for Alfie . He is currently in Dorset but we can transport him to his foster home.

Sleep well Jess 💔💔💔. Wonderful words below from her foster parents Martin and Michelle
A very sad day here as today we’ve had to help LTF Jess over the rainbow bridge 🌈.
Following her MRI scan back in November and diagnosis of a degenerative brain disorder we sadly watched her decline over the last couple of months to the point we felt we had to make this horrible decision for her.
... It would have been two years ago next weekend that we picked up a timid beautiful little girl who loved nothing better than a cuddle to help her feel safe and forget her previous life. (probably on a puppy farm)
Her previous owners had taken her to be pts as they didn’t want to pay for a mammary tumour removal operation that’s when Spaniel Aid stepped in and her life started to look up.
She settled into family life here brilliantly and although she was deaf we worked hard together on her recall with arm signals and treats and for a year or so she enjoyed running free and walking mostly off lead with us before we started to notice the changes in her behaviour, which we now understand as the beginning of her decline.
Thank you Nicola, Maxine, Helen, Joanne and everyone at SAUK for giving us such a beautiful little girl to foster and for all of your support over the past couple of months with her.
RIP little Jess, run free and go chase those birdies 🌈💔 — feeling heartbroken
