“There are lots of things I love about my job: the interaction with people, the atmosphere at the hospice, it’s a happy place even if we care for people with complex life-limiting conditions. I like to feel I am needed. As soon as I walk through the door, someone is looking for me as they need something to be fixed, and it’s not only staff, but patients as well. This summer there was a patient who could not go out in the garden as his wheelchair didn’t have any straps and he didn’t feel safe enough. I just added some and he spent all the time sitting outside in the garden. He enjoyed it so much” Steve Newton, Head of Maintenance
It takes more than nurses to make a Hospice.

With our Christmas fair looming, we are in need of items for our Tombola. If you are having a good clear out before Christmas, we are looking for bottles of wine, toiletries, chocolates or any unwanted presents. We are also in need of toys for our Santa's Grotto, which need to be new, with tags or in boxes. These can be brought to the hospice and placed in the basket in reception. Many thanks🎅🎄

"Before attending the day service at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice I imagined that coming to the hospice, I would have met mainly older people, but that’s not the case. The atmosphere at the hospice is really joyful, positive and uplifting.
"They genuinely care and nothing seems too much. I am looking forward to coming here. Sometimes it really helps to talk to other people who perfectly understand what you are going through. But at the hospice they can also help manage my sy...mptoms and I know I have access to a team of expert doctors and nurses. For instance I was able to arrange to receive some prescriptions with the help of one of the doctors based at the hospice which saved me a trip to my surgery" Jo Harker, patient
Patients accessing hospice care have access to an expert medical team including specialist community nurses, staff nurses, doctors, consultants in palliative medicine, social workers, physiotherapists, complementary and occupational therapists.

Both my Mum and my Father in Law were at Wheatfields for the end of their lives within a year of each other. They were treated with so much respect and care from all the staff. Family were also respected when visiting. Within the first few minutes of arriving and being settled into bed, my Mum said she was both happy and comfortable. My Sisters and I agreed upon leaving her that day that if she were to die that night then at least we knew she was in a good place and felt completely safe and happy. She was looked after for about 3 weeks and we couldn't have wished for anywhere better for our lovely Mum. That same week our Daughter started at the Sue Ryder shop in Headingley and has become the shop mascot at the Mascot Races each year at Wetherby. My husband and I now volunteer a day or two each week and find it very rewarding. Wheatfields is a wonderful place for those facing the end of their life or needing respite care. We could never thank them enough for all their care in making both Mum's and my Father in Law's last days happy. God Bless all the staff at Wheatfields.
