About The Alternative Technology Centre
Promoting sustainable living for everyone!
The Alternative Technology Centre Description
It all started over a few too many drinks one evening. Polly Webber and 'H' Gregg decided to set up an information and education centre on all aspects of sustainable development.
They put an ad in the local paper asking for interested people to get in touch, and where overwhelmed by the response.
Having decided to not borrow any money for the venture, they went to the landlord of Hebble end mill, which was a very underused premises, and asked him to lend them some units for a year until they got on their feet. He didn't quite agree, but he did offer the units for a peppercorn rent, and asked 'can you start on Monday?! '
And there began a round of making bags out of recycled jeans, and selling them,
building the centre up step by step, with plenty of volunteers and enthusiasm.

Please would people sign this petition. A last attempt to save our hydro power projects.
The ATC building, and the businesses it works alongside, survived the terrible flood water and we will be working with our remarkable community and partners to build a resilient, better and more sustainable valley
The Good News: Jane and Bede Mullen's hydro electric scheme in the Colden Valley is now up and running and producing around 1000 KWh a day. The Bad News: Unfortunately, under the new Feed in Tariff rates announced last week, this sort of scheme will no longer be financially viable. Will it be the last we see installed around here? https://youtu.be/W8uDXbmYxfQ
.... meanwhile we are seeing every community energy scheme we are working on collapse due to the govt's sudden and last minute proposed change to the Feed in Tariff scheme (significant reductions in tariff payments for all technologies, faster degression, quarterly deployment caps, complete wind down of FIT scheme by 2019 at the latest). This comes after the removal of pre-accreditation as of midnight 30th September i.e. this week. Please find the time to help fight this by... doing one or more of the following: 1. Join the campaign at http://keepfits.org/ 2. Write to your MP. You can use REGEN SW’s great lobbying pack http://www.regensw.co.uk/…/…/sw-day-o f-action-lobbying-pack/ 3. Sign this petition to get the FITs reduction issue raised in parliament https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/ 106791 4. Submit evidence to Community Energy England’s response via their survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CEEFITsSur vey

Well we have just heard officially that our application to the Electric Bike Share scheme was successful and so watch this space for news!
Please consider voting for Riverside School to get some solar panels on their roof from the M & S energy share fund. Voting closes on September 30th! https://www.mandsenergyfund.com/project/2 8333/
Last March, 85 homes in Bradford Moor were given "fat vats" by Yorkshire Water to store waste cooking oil, which are then collected and used to create energy.
This week cycle:recycle, our bike project, are taking part in CTC's pilot Bike Revival project. You can: donate a bike, fill in a questionnaire (and get free bike lights for doing so), learn how to fix a puncture, get a free assessment of your bike's condition with ten vouchers towards any work that needs doing), see the amazing array of reconditioned bikes and parts ....
Unfortunately this scheme is now no longer running. The ATC is currently promoting an insulation scheme which is specifically designed for the type of housing in this area, where people have a 'room in the roof'. Up till now, grant schemes have not covered measures of this type but Greendale Housing have been successful in getting funding to carry out the work in two areas of Hebden Bridge. In some cases the work can be carried out free - depending on the amount of carbon sa...ved from the work, and the cost of having the work done. Full details of the scheme can be seen on our website at www.alternativetechnology.org.uk If your property is in an eligible area (as can be seen on the maps below) and you are interested, please contact the ATC on 01422 842121 (Mon - Fri between 10 am and 5 pm) or email us.

The ATC has moved .... to a new, bigger and really exciting place - still in Hebden Bridge though. Give us a week or two to get settled in and then business as usual. In the meantime, if you have any questions, email us at info@alternativetechnology.org.uk or telephone 01422 842121 (the new landline will not be connected till the 8th May and until then use our mobile 07768210005)
Flash himself being the one to launch it ......
We launched the first of our small hydro systems in the upper valley this morning. This little turbine is pumping out just under 500 watts and is the first of its kind in England. Working a treat!
Cycle:recycle are having a jumble sale ALL THIS MONTH. Lots of bargains to be had.
