Drawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years, director Steve Loveridge’s Sundance award winning Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. is a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star.
She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka’s armed Tamil resistance, she hid from the government in the face of a vicious and bloody civil war. When her family fled to the UK, ...she became Maya, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally, the world met her as M.I.A. when she emerged on the global stage, having created a mashup, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics, art school punk, hip-hop beats and the unwavering, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth.
Never one to compromise on her vision, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. provides unparalleled, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes, becoming one of the most recognizable, outspoken and provocative voices in music today.

Youth culture meets identity politics in this part-thriller, part-gay love story set in London in 1977, days before the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations. The hedonistic world of pirate DJs Chris and Caz is shattered when a close friend is killed while cruising in the local park. The black community suspect the National Front, but the police pull Chris in as a suspect.
This beautifully crafted period piece, a bold and stylish debut feature from Isaac Julien, paints a convin...cing picture of late-'70s London. The city is a carefully mapped out social landscape, open to all but offering safety to none, as we are taken to a Dalston barber, east London council estates festooned with Union Jacks, West End offices, soul clubs and city parks.

Irving Berlin was nominated for an Oscar for composing the music and Fred dancing 'Cheek to Cheek' with Ginger, in her famous feather ballgown is a sh...ow-stopping moment.

❤️ the Hyde Park, everything about it, the building, the gas lights, excellent value (inc Leeds Card discount if you have one), cosy, clean, great selection of snacks and drink including some great beers, wonderful vegan flapjack and tiffin from That Old Chestnut, Northern Block ice cream, comfy seats, respectful clientele, friendly staff, kids screenings and a varied and different films, and it looks like the forthcoming renovations are only going to add to that.

User

What a beautiful place! And a great place to see 'It's a Wonderful Life' for the first time last night. The spontaneous applause at the end was a joy!

Well done to all involved in preserving and maintaining this architectural and community gem!

User

This place is the best. A beautiful, atmospheric, cosy and comfortable place to enjoy films, run by staff and volunteers who love the films and look after their audiences. Plus there are dog-friendly screenings which is totally brilliant. Hyde Park Picture House is a gem.

User

This place is a part of my heritage, having been brought up just round the corner. I am so happy that it is being maintained and run so well, and will be making this my first choice when checking out where to see new films. And if you haven't seen "I, Daniel Blake" yet, please do, and take your young people. My 15-year old daughter found it really interesting and valuable.

User

This is a lovely classic picture house. Comfortable seating. What i really love is that it is not a chain! They keep this independent route with the snacks for sale, local small brands. A great night out!

User

One of the most incredible cinematic experiences I've ever had and one I will not be forgetting anytime soon.

I visited this picture house yesterday at 6:15 to watch 'A Ghost Story' (seeing as it's a film that I'd had my eye on for a while) and I'd been meaning to go to this picture house as is it had been recommended to me as 'one of the best classical picture houses in the country'. As a big fan of films I thought I'd go and take a gander and as soon as they handed me the ticket I sort of knew it was going to be a rather good experience. The film itself was a modern masterpiece, and this is a lovely little one screen cinema and I highly recommend it.

User

Lovely cinema run by brilliant enthusiast staff 👍🏻

User

Love love love the Bring Your Own Baby screenings! It's great to have something grown up for me but that I can bring my baby along to.

User

It's partly the nostalgia of an old style, single screen cinema, screening great films past and present, and being so much cheaper than Showcase etc. 'Philosophy and Film' and 'Q&A' screenings also give a great return on just going to see a film.

User

If only all cinemas were so cosy, welcoming and nostalgic. A trip is always a treat.

User

Beautiful cinema with great student prices

User

Beautiful cinema of which I've been to a good number of times now since my first visit about a year ago. Virtually all my visits have been for the creatures of the night specials which have quickly become my favourite cinematic experiences. To be able to enjoy classic films in such historic surroundings really is a pleasure. I only wish the creatures of the night showings were done with even more regularity. Pleasant and friendly staff, always a joy to visit.

User

As a film student it's perfect. Such a great place to go to keep up with the new releases and not break the bank the atmosphere is also amazing, it really feels like the place is worshiping the film it's showing.

User

Amazing experience for my first time to this beautiful monument and old classic style cinema when we were greeted on the door, served with a smile and the architecture was impeccable and even went to see a modern movie (Star Wars) with plenty of seats to choose from. So would highly recommend for you to take a visit and definitely can’t wait to come back again thanks for your hospitality and may it be there in another 100 years time too!

User

Absolutely love coming here! It's not like those big chain cinemas, you get better quality of films here, plus you can buy a glass of wine and a decent ice cream (rather than the expensive junk food they sell at Vue!) Plus they actually let dogs into the cinema at select screenings!

User

Absolutely awesome, first timer here (22 Dec 2017) and was amazed - just like the cinemas of my youth in Ilkley. Well, well done to everybody concerned and i can’t wait for my next visit - the balcony beckons 😍

User

A beautiful cinema building with so much history, showing a great selection of independent and mainstream films at a very reasonable ticket cost. Special events are always run like clockwork and their friendly staff are a credit to them. It just feels so much more special than going to one of the big corporate cinemas.

User

Love this place, it feels like a cinema should and the audiences are generally very respectful of other attendees also It's a a warm and welcoming place, the staff are attentive and friendly with a genuine love for the films they show.

User

Gorgeous little picture house with so many (what look to be) original fittings from the Art Nouveau period

Very friendly staff, good seats in the balcony and excellent sound and vision for the film I saw (Rammstein:Paris).

All round, a far better experience than any multiplex cinema.

Old fashioned? Yes - and proud to be so!
