The Last Factory Ltd Description
The Last Factory
The monument `the fustian Cutters Knife' stands in the centre of Hebden Bridge as a tribute to the history of the textile trade locally. The fast flowing soft water Pennine streams were ideal for the protection of Fustian, a heavy duty material, and for power to the early mills. In turn this gave rise to a large garment manufacturing trade which by the close of the 19th Century employed thousands. Hebden Bridge became known as 'Trouser Town'.
As late as 1970 the town boasted 4 weaving sheds, 3 dye houses and over 25 separate manufactures. Today there is one.
