Some of you will have seen the announcement today that Jeremy Hunt intends to increase medical student numbers by 25%, but that he also plans to fine junior doctors who don't stay in NHS training for 4 years. Take the figures you read in the press with a pinch of salt, as at the moment much is unknown. Below is the BMA's official statement:
'BMA Press release
EMBARGOED: 00:01 Tuesday 04 October 2016
... BMA response to the Health Secretary’s announcement of more medical places in the UK
Responding to the Health secretary’s announcement of more medical places in the UK, Dr Mark Porter, BMA council chair, said:
“Jeremy Hunt has been health secretary for four years, and while it is welcome that he has finally admitted the government has failed to train enough doctors to meet rising demand, this announcement falls far short of what is needed.
“The government’s poor workforce planning has meant that the health service is currently facing huge and predictable staff shortages. We desperately need more doctors, particularly with the government plans for further seven-day services, but it will take a decade for extra places at medical school to produce more doctors. This initiative will not stop the NHS from needing to recruit overseas staff.
“International doctors bring great skill and expertise to the NHS. Without them, our health service would not be able to cope.
“Over the past year, junior doctors across the country have raised concerns about the reality of working in an overstretched NHS and the impact that has on their morale and patient care. We know there are chronic staff shortages and rota gaps across the NHS, with major recruitment problems in areas such as emergency medicine and general practice. The government must tackle the root causes of this workforce crisis and the reasons why so many UK-trained doctors are choosing to leave the NHS rather than forcing doctors – who currently pay tens of thousands of pounds in tuition fees – to stay somewhere they don’t want to be. Demotivated, burnt-out doctors who don’t want to be in their jobs, will not be good for patients.” END'
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns you wish us to pass on.

“Today’s result should not be viewed as a win for the government,”[...]“This ruling will do nothing to address the fact that morale among junior doctors is at an all-time low. Nor will it quell junior doctors’ concerns about the imminent introduction of a flawed contract they have rejected, or the deep sense of anger and mistrust that has built up towards the government over the last year.”

Hello all. Below you will find updated guidance on industrial action specifically aimed at medical students. As far as we are aware the October IA is still going to talk place. We will let you know of any updates as soon as we can, and will liaise with the Dean regarding the medical school's policy on placement and student participation.
