Wakefield Cathedral Description

This hidden architectural gem has its origins in a pre-Conquest church, but the story of the present building starts circa 1150 when parts of the surviving nave north arcade were first built. This was followed in approximately 1220 by the southern arcade, which is made up of alternating round and octagonal columns. Following the probable collapse of a central tower around 1320, both arcades were heightened, giving their present form, and new multi-shaft columns added. The church was re-consecrated by Archbishop William de Melton in 1329.

Christmas with Jethro Tull: Dec 6 Wakefield Cathedral TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!
Tickets have just gone on sale for rock legend Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull who is coming to Wakefield Cathedral this Christmas to help raise funds and fly the flag for the Christian tradition.
... He will be performing The Christmas Jethro Tull concert in Wakefield Cathedral on 6 December.
Said Ian: “Whether your Christmas is a secular affair of gift-giving and family gatherings, or a more worshipful recognition of one of the two biggest days in the Christian calendar, join us for some uplifting Christmas spirit, music, readings and maybe even a prayer or two.”
Ian, a self professed Deist/Pantheist, has a heart for the Christian traditions and aims to support both the Christian religion and the places of worship by performing in some of the country’s cathedrals and churches to help them raise much needed funds.
He said: “The bringing together of people of all backgrounds, cultures and faiths in this way is possible perhaps only under the auspices of modern Christianity, especially in the Anglican church.
“If I can help draw people in to these beautiful and historic buildings to savour just a little of the spirit of Christmas, then it is a worthwhile effort.”
One hundred per cent of all ticket sales will be donated to the cathedral for the upkeep of the building and its musical tradition.
Said Ian: “I try to balance the festive time of year in song with a few of the elements of an old fashioned carol service – all delivered with god humour and good cheer.
“Grace me and hopefully a few special guests with your presence for some of the best known repertoire of Jethro Tull and a few snippets of seasonal traditional church and classical music. "
Christmas Jethro Tull: Wakefield Cathedral - Friday 6 December: 19.30 TICKETS priced from £27.50 https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/christmas- with-jethro-tull-t…

COME AND JOIN US AT ARTWALK WAKEFIELD THIS WEDNESDAY
It’s been a while …but we’re back!
... Come and make your own piece of creative art inspired by our Back Where You Came From exhibition.
Back Where You Came From is an exhibition that tells the story of eight asylum seekers who found themselves in Yorkshire after being made forcibly homeless. The artists were inspired by the Bible stories of Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Jacob and their families’ involuntary migration as told in Genesis, to create monoprints and ceramics
University of Sheffield academic Dr Casey Strine and artist/art therapist Emilie Taylor worked with the asylum seekers and refugees in Sheffield to create this art exhibition which reflects their experiences of seeking sanctuary in the city.
And this Wednesday (ARTWALK WAKEFIELD) Casey Strine will be in the Cathedral running workshops to encourage people to make their own art inspired by the exhibition.
Workshops will run from 4 – 6pm with a break for Evensong and then 7.30-9pm.
The exhibition is part of the cathedral’s plans this year to help people think about identity and what that means in this current political context. It runs until the end of the Week

The interior has been extensively renovated in recent years from the font to the East end. Underfloor heating makes the warm welcome from the volunteers and clergy even warmer. There are regular events such as Tuesday at One - a lunchtime concert every week with free tea and coffee. There are also film shows, concerts and, of course, the usual religious services.

Thanks for the ladies lunch with micheal parr can make suggestion for Danny miller next plz xx

Many thanks to the Events Manager, Roz Cochrane, for organising a very successful tour of the Cathedral on Tuesday 6th March for the Grenoside and District Local History Group. Also thanks to Richard York, our guide, who gave a very informative, light-hearted talk which gave us a glimpse of the past history of the Cathedral and included recent refurbishments. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all our members.

Lovely holiday craft session, both my children really enjoyed it and are already asking when we can go to the next one. Thank you.

Iconic, beautiful and peaceful place. The Cathedral the most iconic building in Wakefield and one of the most in the whole of West Yorkshire.

I went to the Compline on Thursday and it was truly wonderful. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the people so friendly.

Thank you for such a lovely experience.

User

I was there yesterday 30/01/18 singing with the Rock Choir. Such a beautiful venue where we received a warm, friendly welcome and our 45 minute performance was well attended and seemingly appreciated. Wonderful architecture and a great cafe, I hope we are able to return.

User

I received a warm welcome at this beautiful church. The "must see" elements of this church are: the High Altar, the carvings on the choir stalls, and the Chapel of St. Mark.

User

I attended my Daughters Graduation, there could not have been a better venue than the beautiful Cathedral, felt very proud indeed, a fantastic experience

Had a quick walk round the Cathedral, very nice with a calm atmosphere. Loved the skull on the wall, and the ceilings are very nice.

A beautiful Cathedral, staff, friends ,choir, and Clergy are pleasure to meet ,everyone is made welcome. I love to drop in when I can.

User

Went to the 9:15 service yesterday. As always it was a polished and uplifting performance but I was sad to see that there was no attempt to decorate the church given that it was harvest festival. Harvest hymns, but no good gifts around us 😔

User

Enjoyed a quite good lunch concert. Then, we have a very comfortable visit in the church in a lot of places. Not in the midst of crowdy visitors like other famous churches, and can view the lovely windows, pictures etc as slow as possible. I can sit down and pray quietly, did a holy walk prayer in the labyrinth, or play around with some decorating corners or dress as a bishop etc. In some corners I can see knitting gathering and arts workshop. So warm that it is really a place to get close with Jesus and feel the love of God!
