About Whitelock’S Ale House

Legendary Leeds pub est 1715. Described by John Betjeman as "the very heart of Leeds", now a freehouse & part of The Five Points Brewing Company family.

Whitelock’S Ale House Description

Whitelock's is the oldest pub in Leeds. Originally opened as The Turk's Head in 1715, it was renamed in the 1880s by then owner John Lupton Whitelock as Whitelock's First City Luncheon Bar.

Under new ownership since May 2012, we have preserved the rich history and charm that has always been the cornerstone of Whitelock’s, while infusing it with new life and and our passion for great service, food and drink.

We serve a wide selection of real ale and craft beers – many from Yorkshire breweries – alongside a menu of fresh, home-cooked and locally sourced food available seven days a week.

Hello all, this is Mike and he is one of our wonderful bar team. He is currently raising money for Cancer Research UK and competing in an Ultra MMA competition this weekend! He has been training super hard and we are very proud. It’s a cause close to his heart and many others too, and if anyone would like to donate, it would be very much appreciated! 🙏 https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mi chael-carrington3

It's this wonderful woman's birthday today! Kim has been with us at Whitelock's for 35 years and the pub would absolutely not be the same without her. She has helped make it the institution in Leeds that it is today. So many of you love her and we do too. HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIM! 💖🎉

When in Leeds visiting from Blackpool Whitelocks is always the 1st port of call This watering hole along with the others in the vicinity is a must between retail stress Which helps the wife to open my wallet further. Great place & lovely history

User

Went there for lunch today, wow very generous with the portions , I had the pie my son finished it off it had me beat. Will definitely go back . Lots of ales to choose from so hubby was happy. Staff friendly .

User

The wife and I dropped in here Saturday afternoon after the theatre. Been here before many time for drinks but it was our first time eating here. The food was beautiful, my wife had the beef and ale pie while I had the burger and scotch eggs. The staff are very friendly and helpful, will definitely be eating here again soon.

The best pub in Leeds

User

Superb food in a gorgeous environment served by very friendly staff. The Yorkshire puds with gravy inside were amazing and lovely to have a roaring coal fire too. Fantastic choice of drinks and great value for money.

User

So cute and quirky, fabulous old hidden gem this! Good wine and plenty of beers on tap. Bustling and a great atmosphere with a lovely outside alleyway as a beer garden.

User

Simply a great city centre pub. Great vibe, quick efficient service, good selection of local beers...including my all-time favourite, Mary Jane. So you pay a bit more than a village local...I really don't care. It is well worth it.

User

Oldest pub in Leeds opened in 1715 so older than America! it’s an old pub in a listed building with a traditional atmosphere nice staff some reet characters place bite tight when full! Serve real ale foods good and finally after 300 yrs ladies they have upgraded the toilets ( now posh)

User

Nice staff, love the place, well I’ve been a customer on & off for over 50 years, since the spinning disc days that used to be in the Victoria Quarter across the way.

User

It’s a glorious proper old pub selling excellent beer and decent unpretentious pub food at a decent price - what’s not to like? As far as I could see there was no telly, fruit machine or music, and no evidence that it doubled as a crêche for modern mums and dads who want it both ways. Long may it prosper.

User

It'd been well over 30 years since I last drank in Whitelock's, little had changed but so much was different. Still a cosy, traditional bar with a great range of proper beer, great to be able to drink Old Peculiar on draught, but the menu and toilets now put it firmly in the 21st century.

User

I first went to Whitelocks with my father 65 years ago when I was just 16.

It has changed very little over the years and still maintains it's Olde Worlde charm.

Fine ales and good food served in a nostalgic atmosphere which is unfortunately long gone in most of today's modern establishments.

User

Great places very friendly staff and the food was delicious. We had the steak pie and the vegetarian burger which was one of the best I’ve tasted. The veg were gorgeous. Would recommend

User

Wish it hadn't of been so busy as would have liked to have tried more gins and beers but could barely get through the pub never mind to the bar!

Otherwise a great little old pub hidden away in the middle of town

User

Nice old style pub, good efficient staff. Wholesome meals. One criticism which I should have brought up at the time allowing the chef to put it right but my bread pudding dessert was cold in the middle. I don’t like complaining for two reasons l don’t want to make things difficult for the staff in the kitchen and also I have a theory that people very often complain just to get something knocked off the bill. I will certainly use the pub again.

User

No doubting it's standing in the history of Leeds, but nowadays it's a pretty expensive place to visit. £4 for a pint of Landford when it was only £2.80 as a guest beer in my local. Food also overpriced. Everything around £11 for what is just pub grub. Unused food space at the far end of the bar would be better used for more beer pumps illiminating the usual scrum near the existing pumps where people seem to want to stand and drink for some unknown reason. All a bit overhyped to be honest

User

I have known this pub maybe 35 years and visit whenever I can. However on Saturday at 1pm it was unpleasantly overfull and at £4 a pint expensive. I only discovered however when I got there that Leeds United were at home that day, so probably avoid on match days. Otherwise just as I remember, historic with good beer which it should be at that price.

User

Great pub with loads of ales to choose from. Good food. Loved the ploughman’s lunch. Disappointed we were asked to move tables after been sat there for 30 min because you had a booking of 10 due in over an hour later.

User

Really nice little pub. Only criticism is that after spending considerable money on a round of drinks, I opened a pack of pretzels I had bought but was told to put them away, because understandably, you're not allowed to eat snacks from outside. My problem was that I couldn't relax with my friend because I felt like I was being monitored Like a schoolchild by a member of staff. Shame.
