If you missed the A Rich Seam exhibition you can still see the 10ft mock up of the rock - that will form part of the sculpture - at the Frenchgate Shopping Centre (near Boots on the ground floor). The actual rock would be much bigger than what we can see here; it will be 18ft wide and 8ft tall. There will be 30 niches, each will be home to a bronze head of a local person who either worked or lived in one of our mining villages. Each head will tell their own story using digita...l technology via smart phones and QR codes. What you can't see here in the mock up is the bronze 6ft listening miner that will stand on the reserve side of the sculpture in a carved out shaft. He is listening out for the Rich Seam of Doncaster's Mining Heritage that runs through the rock. Help us raise money to make this design happen at www.doncastersminingstatue.org.uk #doncasterisgreat

Enjoyed being part of this as a student and volunteer. It's important to remember and celebrate our history

Contrary to what Chris has written below, the sculpture is far more complex than just a bunch of heads and, if he'd had a good look around, he would have noticed there is a six foot bronze miner that is an integral part of the design, and that the equipment he will be carrying is authentic, donated by the miners themselves. Art is a very subjective thing, but facts are not: regardless of whether you like the final design or not, I know that the artist has worked very hard with ex-miners and their families to come up with something unique and visually arresting to represent our mining heritage and, through the heads and their stories, a vital way of life will be remembered, commemorated and celebrated for posterity. Knowing how important mining was to our borough, and how close knit those communities once were, I urge all residents to get behind this important and much needed project: we owe the miners a great debt, and this will acknowledge that now and into the future.

A statue to commemorate the mining industry in Doncaster would be an excellent idea. The mining industry kept me in work for a number of years.
