About Afs Mountaineering

Hi I'm Fabian and I'm a Summer & Winter Mountain Leader & Rock Climbing Instructor. If you want to gain new skills, learn to navigate, climb, get in touch!

Afs Mountaineering Description

I offer guided walks, treks, wilderness camping and backpacking in the mountains of Britain - The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Snowdonia and the expanse of the Scottish Highlands among others.
A qualified Mountain Leader, I've been walking and mountaineering in the British Mountains since 2001.
Camping in the wild - by a river in a remote Scottish glen or on a mountain ridge watching the sunset is one of the activities I offer along with reaching that goal or summit you have always dreamed of!
I am also able to offer accredited National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) Bronze and Silver navigation courses. Whether you've never used a map or compass before or want to build confidence to plan your own routes and get off the beaten track these may be for you.

Change of date and focus! This is a good chance to come out and practice some navigation - including some night navigation. This will be perfect for anyone wanting some peer exped practice considering doing their Mountain Leader Training and/or assessment. Get in touch if interested - there are limited spaces available!

I've not got much planned by way of set events for the autumn, but I'm getting busy planning for the #winter trips in #Scotland , building a new website, and introducing intro to rock climbing courses for next summer! So watch this space in the coming weeks. But I'm still about for private guiding this autumn, or running navigation NNAS courses. #Autumn and winter in the #mountains can be magical to #explore! Plus I'll be around supporting the #DarkSkiesFestival2019 over the February half term weeks on the #NorthYorkMoors So just get in touch 😃

Age isn't important as proven by some solid determination! Sgor Goaith (1118m) and Carn Ban Mor (1052m) in the Cairngorms.

Meall a' Buachaille. At 810m (2,657ft) this hill commands amazing views across the northern corries of the #Cairngorms and the highest, coldest and windiest plateau in Britain. Fantastic effort and determination to reach the #summit in high wind conditions!

On Saturday 13 October 2018 - a group of Real3Peaks Challenge volunteers will take to the slopes of Roseberry Topping on the North York Moors to help keep this popular hill clean. After a busy summer and autumn season, this is an excellent opportunity to give the mountain a 'deep clean' in places where litter and forgotten items collect as the vegetation dies back for winter.
Volunteers for this day are needed! And need to have previous hill walking experience and be prepare...d to be self sufficent at times during the day - hence this is not a 'guided walk'. But, if you or anyone else you know, would be keen to support a group of moor and hill-happy volunteers work in (potentially) in all weathers on the Moors in October, then check out the Facebook event information and get in touch with Real3Peaks Challenge for more information...

The changing of the seasons is always a magical time in the mountains. This time of year it's not uncommon to wake up above the clouds when wild camping and enjoy warm sunshine while it's cold and damp in the valleys and glens!

I've not scheduled in any Bronze or Silver National Navigation Award Scheme courses this autumn... Yet... Tell me - is this something folk still want to do? Autumn can have some stunning days out on the hills and Moors so no need to stop going out exploring! Happy to schedule some in or go on demand. Needs a minimum of three and runs over 2 days (min 12 hours).... Includes training, assessment and the certificate. I run Bronze around Roseberry Topping on the North west corner of the North York Moors National Park. I run Silver in the Howgill Fells between Kirkby Stephen and Sedburgh

Really pleased to be supporting this initiative. Come and join us to help keep our Roseberry Topping clean! This is all about helping maintain our popular outdoor areas. The initiative is covering hill, moor and mountain areas with some of the highest visitor footfall. This is not a guided walk - I'll be there with some bin bags and just helping to coordinate and cover different parts of the hill. So do come and join me and others!... No idea what the weather will be doing so you'll need to be equipped for the day as well as having a map and compass with knowledge of how to use it!

What a brilliant day finishing off a silver NNAS map and compass course. And passed with flying colours 😃 Next stop for Joanne will be her summer ML. Not the heavy rain forecast and even some views. The Howgill Fells are a perfect little mountain range for these skills at Silver. It takes the foundation skills from Bronze, adds to them and builds up to real mountain journeys.
I'll be asking whether folk are interested in courses over the autumn so have a look out. I've not scheduled anything in. But if you like what you see and want to gain these skills get in touch!

Terrific day today running a Silver NNAS course. All about reading the landscape and having a compass bearing hallelujah moment 😃 The weather was warm, dry(ish) with a bit of mizzle but the mist made it all absolutely real! Most of navigation is confidence and trust in the compass. Brought together the fundamental tools to look at strategies #howgillfells #thecalf #cautleyspout

Nothing planned this weekend? Want to brush up on or learn some new mountain navigation skills? Gain some navigation confidence? The weather is looking perfect for compass bearings and developing navigation strategies as it's the kind of weather where you'd need it! Spaces available! Bring your waterproofs! 😃

User

Three brilliant passes at Bronze NNAS today! Even the "what on Earth is this?" conversion to a 1:50K map was literally taken in their stride (pun intended!) Mel and Hiede getting to grips with the different map scales

User

Brilliant day with Mel, Martin and Hiede on a Bronze map & compass course. Honing in on some of the key tools of navigation. The biggest learning point (a revelation in fact!) has been realising that paths on the map may not be there on the ground & ways to deal with that!

User

That's pretty impressive!

User

Struggling with maps and compasses? Come and join us over the next two weekends! We're delivering the 2 day National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze and Silver beginner and intermediate training courses on the @northyorkmoors and #HowgillFells https://t.co/nSrJN2b5Sw

User

The #NorthYorkMoors have some of the darkest skies in England - perfect for #stargazing, #galaxy spotting and seeing the whole #MilkyWay

User

Some spaces left! Given the glorious summer so far get out exploring with more confidence! If you're near or visiting the North York Moors next weekend come and gain new skills!

User

Still spaces left for the follow-on course! Come and learn more detailed map and compass skills in the 'mini mountain range' of the Howgill Fells in the Yorkshire Dales near Sedburgh and the eastern Lake District

I joined AFS Mountaineering on one of their two day NNAS Bronze Award courses. I would wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone who is new to navigation or who just needs a general refresher.

Fabian is knowledgeable and approachable; he instinctively gave support and advice where required and showed genuine enthusiasm to see us progress and gain confidence.

I had a great weekend and wouldn't hesitate to use AFS Mountaineering for future courses and other guided events.
