Appleby Castle Grounds will open to the public on Friday 19th April for the 2019 season.
The opening times for April and May will be 10.30 - 4.00 Monday to Friday and 10am - 4.30 at the weekend.
... The cost of viewing the castle grounds will be;
Adults £6 per person. Couples £10 per couple.
Children under 12 £3 per child.
Families £15 per family of two adults and up to three children.

Appleby Castle are delighted to announce that the World Owl Trust is coming to Appleby Castle. As an introduction of what's to come, this Christmas time we are hosting an evening with the owls. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.

The Evidence Bedroom is located at the Eastern side of the castle with a tremendous view overlooking the Pennines and the river below. The room is dominated by a 17th century four poster bed that was carved in the English Lake District Stay in the Evidence Bedroom on New Years Eve. At 6pm a buffet banquet begins, with Jazz from the Gershwin gang, bag pipes played throughout the castle, a jester, fireworks and a disco until 2pm. What a treat!!! Lovely hotel to stay. Beautiful bedrooms and so clean and well decorated, so much history and character. I really do recommend to stay there. Staff so friendly.

We went for a deluxe afternoon tea which was fabulous and had a pleasant walk around the grounds. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and will definitely be back - well done all

We stayed there last week overnight on our way up to Glasgow. Our first family holiday with our 6 month old baby boy. They were so helpful and made us feel welcome. They are fully prepared for babies. High chair and cot provided. The chef was great. He came and had a chat with us before super. What a historic place to stay. The tour of the castle well worth a listen to. It’s certainly unique and well worth a visit. Thank you so much for looking after us.

We stayed for one night and was made to feel welcome we was in the servants quarters our room was quircky the breakfast was very nice. The castle was fabulous and we also had a guided tour which was interesting. I would recommend anyone to go and have a stop over. Thank you for everything ��

My daughter’s wedding at the castle yesterday. Wow, what a wonderful venue. Many guests arrived Friday for evening meal and accommodation, it was ideal with a hot buffet and such friendly staff in a relaxed atmosphere.

Saturday started with a lovely choice of breakfast and an excellent and relaxing day as the remainder of guests arrived. The ceremony was brilliant and the staff did us proud with an amazing ‘Wedding Breakfast’ at 5 o’clock PM followed by an amazing party with a wonderful supper of sandwiches at 10 o’clock for the party goers.

Left today after a most memorable event in wonderful surroundings. Sally, the owner and Peter the manager where available throughout to deal with all queries and I cannot fault the whole occasion. Value for money at it’s utmost. I would highly recommend this location for an event of a lifetime or simply a relaxing break amongst beautiful countryside.

Most beautiful place I have ever stayed in my life. Everyone should treat themself to a magical stay at this unforgettable castle full of history and beauty.

We met 2 butlers during our stay who did everything possible to make us happy! Beautiful castle & grounds.

Abit disappointed about the hot tub not been available as was looking forward to that never the less we spent this time doing other activities and roamed the village, which again was beautiful.

We were a party of 4 for afternoon tea and my parents are both disabled. We couldn't of asked for better service. We were also joined by the lady of the castle Sally Nightingale such a lovely out going lady made my husband and dad very welcome joining them on a walk in her home . Would recommend everyone to visit if u r in the area.

Amazing Wedding Venue



We had our wedding at Appleby Castle in August and it was incredible, a truly special place. I must start by saying I've 20 years experience in the wedding Industry and we viewed so many places before deciding on Appleby. The Castle is spectacular, a perfect mix of elegance, quirk and majesty, you can see and feel the history around every corner. We got married in the Grand Hall upstairs which is stunning, the tables were long oak trestle tables and the chairs huge glamorous almost royal style, it felt like a medieval banquet. The dinning room would be lovely for a smaller wedding and we had our night Doo in the Hall downstairs which was perfect for a party. They also have an amazing Tavern just off the Hall downstairs, with coats of armour on the wall and props that ended up being used in our photo booth!



They have great Accommodation onsite to for around 40 people, 3 lovely cottages that are 5 star luxury and the rooms in the castle are steeped in History, some with 400 year old tapestries, they really are so grand. Also they have lovely grounds, a great courtyard and gardens which made a stunning backdrop for our photos



They've Invested heavily recently and it will only get better and mor popular, especially as Appleby is a lovely little village with 2 great hotels within walking distance and an awesome pub we had dinner in the night before. The castle also recommended our florist ( The Flower Basket ) who are based in the village and we're fantastic, we strongly recommend



The Best thing about Appleby Castle is they were so relaxed, too many venues these days are so regimented and you feel a bit on a process line! Not with Appleby, you were in control and nothing was too much trouble, we could design it how we wanted and we changed our mind many times



So want to say a huge thank you to the staff, Peter and Sally and all the hotel and bar staff who made our day so special and also special thanks to Ashley who was the castles wedding coordinator, who not only did an unbelievable job of the wedding hair but also really helped with all the planning and room decoration and is a lovely creative person. Finally, We'd also strongly recommend their catering partner, Rowleys, their food was spectacular and the 'host the roast' was one of the highlights of the day



Literally every guest said it was the best wedding they'd been too, you can't better higher praise than that

Absolutely amazing castle. We stayed here for a night after getting married and had such a fantastic experience. James the butler was extremely accommodating, we had a private dining room for dinner, food was excellent, huge portions, we felt like royals! The tour the following morning was great, the guide clearly loved his job! Was lovely meeting the owner too. Would highly recommend visiting here, we will be back again soon!

A stunning castle in the heart of Cumbria, which works hard to retain all its original charm and history. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, with butler service, suits of armour and fantastic paintings as far as the eye can see. The rooms are grand, classy and comfortable, with all the amenities you would require. On the evening we visited, the people of Appleby held a lantern parade from the town up to the castle and there was entertainment in the grounds, the atmosphere was magical. I can't recommend the Appleby Castle highly enough and can't wait to return.

A great Hotel, a wonderfully historic castle that could be used for Film and TV as well as a great wedding and coroporate event venue. Well done Sally for restoring this place to its former glories. We loved our stay here and would recommend highly. Paul Davies

This was an amazing experience - the first night was in a room in the servants quarters and this was not so good as there was no view so we moved to a better room with a lively view of the river Eden and the penines. Breakfast was very good and the only criticism I have is that the staff did not offer any information about the surrounding area and recommend places to visit which would have been gladly received as we had not stayed in this area before so had no local knowledge. I would recommend this experience but I would be careful as to which room you stay in as this makes a massive difference to the quality of your stay

A great Hotel, a wonderfully historic castle that could be used for Film and TV as well as a great wedding and coroporate event venue. Well done Sally for restoring this place to its former glories. We loved our stay here and would recommend highly. Paul Davies

This was an amazing experience - the first night was in a room in the servants quarters and this was not so good as there was no view so we moved to a better room with a lively view of the river Eden and the penines. Breakfast was very good and the only criticism I have is that the staff did not offer any information about the surrounding area and recommend places to visit which would have been gladly received as we had not stayed in this area before so had no local knowledge. I would recommend this experience but I would be careful as to which room you stay in as this makes a massive difference to the quality of your stay
