Last week two of our members had a week away, during that week they visited the Avon Valley Railway Official. the reason for their stop here was to see the tkh49 locomotive.
The locomotive karel 4015 of 1947 was sold to UK ownership in 1993 and after a series of sales came to the Avon valley railway where she was operational till 2013. Then overhauled and returned to service where ticket currently lasts her till 2026.
She was a brilliant locomotive to ride behind and all of t...he crew said she was a dream to drive/fire. They allowed us to go on to the footplate to see just what our hutnik will one day be like when she is rebuilt.
We thank the railway and the staff for there hospitality and we hope to see them again. We also hope they will visit us sometime.
Who knows. Maybe one day we will see hutnik and karel together.

carriages not your thing ?
why not join us one one of the last few summer brake van tours, each lasts around 2 hours exploring areas of the site the carriages cannot make.
please note that there is a minimum age of 10 years old and there are no toilets avaliable on this service, tours leave at around 1630.
... there is no charge for the tours but donations are taken, the tours still cost the society money so any donations given will allow us to keep these tours going for future generations.
If you wish to book places, contact details are on the events.
we only have 3 more of these summer evening dates remaining, so dont miss out.

Put the brakevan ride on your bucket list!!!!!!

My Son and I thoroughly enjoyed the brake van trip yesterday. Staff were friendly, and it was good to see at least one operational Janus similar to the one we help look after. Well presented and restored steam loco and the brake vans. A unique location, and railway. I pass nearby every month and never knew how big the site is, and how expansive the railway network still is. As a railway nut it was excellent, shame we don't get to see all of the railway or loco's, and were back at the station just after 18.30,As we are also into photography we took 100's of photo's. There is so much to see of the industrial nature of the works, the blast furnaces and everything around. It was amazing, had it been possible could have spent hours there. Industry as it used to be! Photo's will be posted on our website,AFRPS are welcome to use any of interest. :) Happy to send you a link.

Many thanks for making a special day for my family on the rail tour today.

User

Lovely little preserved industrial line - with some great tours (especially the brake-van tours, as these can go places the coaching stock can't). Brilliant to see a working steelworks in operation too, with their various locos. We were lucky and got to run down near the blast furnaces and watch a loaded torpedo wagon coming out - the sheer heat coming off it was quite something to experience!

Very friendly and knowledgeable volunteers/staff too, as we went all around the huge site.

Will certainly be re-visiting them again soon.

User

I so happy to be helping maintenance the steam loco I have won't to do something like this from when I was a little boy and I get to learn a lot about the loco and even how they run and help when they do steam trip i am so enjoying my time helping out at the appleby frodingham presporvation society i think my dream has came true all with a few weeks they got me help on the steam locos by putting the coil in the fire box when on a steam tour trip round steelworks

A little long at 3hrs 40mins and need to add to advert about donations as I didn't bother taking much cash and would of donated more if I'd of known. Definitely recommend if your into learning the knowledge of the works it was very interesting. Thanks to all who give up there spare time to make this possible x

User

A very interesting and informative tour around the vast steelworks. I can't recommend it highly enough. On a personal note it was great to see two Janus locos similar to the one my grandfather drove on Appleby Frodingham works 50+ years ago.
