The Museum first opened its doors to the public on 4 August 1928. In our collection, we have a wonderful photo of people waiting expectantly for the doors to open. We invited visitors to help us recreate that photo on Saturday, the 90th anniversary of the Museum, and hope you like the result!

User

The Museum is 90 tomorrow (Saturday)! Can you help us recreate this photo? Join us at the Museum tomorrow at 10am. The first 90 visitors will be admitted at the 1928 price of 6p!

Lily Cole's "Balls", set in modern Liverpool, follows the struggles of young mothers struggling to care for their babies.

Lily Cole, the Brontë Society’s creative partner for 2018, has created a film to mark Emily Brontë’s bicentenary. On display at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and also at the Foundling Museum, London, "Balls" takes as its starting point Heathcliff, the foundling character central to "Wuthering Heights", and explores links between the Foundling Hospital story and the much-loved novel by Emily Brontë. To accompany the film, we display objects from the Foundling Museum Collection.... In partnership with the Foundling Museum, the film is produced by Fury Films, co-commissioned by Rapid Response Unit and was filmed on location in Liverpool. The script is co-written by Lily Cole and Stacey Gregg.
This very special event on the eve of Emily’s 200th birthday will see Lily Cole present a premiere screening of her short film. She will be discussing the issues and stories explored through her commission alongside Caro Howell, Director of the Foundling Museum.
Tickets £12/£10 concessions and Brontë Society members (£5 for 16-25 year olds). Ticket holders will have the opportunity to visit the Museum after the event to see the installation. Please book in advance at www.bronte.org.uk/whats-on or on 01535 640192. Lily Cole: Balls will be exhibited at the Brontë Parsonage Museum from 30 July until 3 December 2018, and is free with admission to the Museum.

The imposing houses, eerie doubling of names and wandering of unquiet spirits combine within "Wuthering Heights" to create one of the great Gothic texts of the nineteenth century. Emily Brontë’s only published novel continues to cast a looming shadow over Gothic writing up to the present day. On the occasion of her two hundredth birthday, novelists Katherine Clements and Beth Underdown discuss the impact of Wuthering Heights on their own writing, and how their work contribute...s to a continuing Gothic tradition, in this event chaired by author Rosie Garland.
Katherine Clements is a critically acclaimed novelist and the current Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the University of Manchester. Her latest novel, "The Coffin Path" (2018), is a ghost story set on the West Yorkshire moors, described by The Times as ‘a wonderfully sinister novel’.
Beth Underdown’s first novel, "The Witchfinder’s Sister" (2017), won the Historical Writer’s Association Debut Crown Award, and has been selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club. She was born in Rochdale and lectures in creative writing at the University of Manchester.
Rosie Garland is a novelist, poet and performer based in the north of England, and one of the contributors to Making Thunder Roar, our 2018 exhibition on Emily Brontë. Her most recent book, "The Night Brother", was released in 2017.
Tickets £8/£6 concessions and Brontë Society members (£2 for 16-25 year olds). Please book in advance at www.bronte.org.uk/whats-on or on 01535 640192.

These beautiful and arresting tales from some of the stars of modern fiction re-examine a character who lives in infamy as a tortured romantic hero – the unforgettable Heathcliff.
Kate Mosse, who has curated this collection, will be joined by fellow contributors Juno Dawson, Dorothy Koomson and Louise Doughty to read from the anthology and to launch the collection, and officially open the programme of events taking place on the weekend of Emily’s bicentenary.

What a magical place this is! I was disappointed not to see ghosts.... The museum offers a superb, immersive experience with friendly staff, excellent learning and information materials and shop. This is my 5th visit in the space of over 30 years. I returned home, spiritually enriched. Well done, all involved.

User

What a lovely place. The museum staff are so friendly and full of information. I was able to take my time and spent an enjoyable 2 hours seeing everything.

User

We visited the museum today and just loved it! 3 generations of us found it so interesting and we will definitely be back!

We had a fantastic time visiting the Parsonage on Monday. The staff were fantastic and made our little girl really enjoy her experience. A definite Bronte fan in the making, even though she is only 4! As a big fan of the Brontes myself, it was so interesting and inspiring to learn so much more about them and to walk around the place where they wrote their fantastic stories. We also had a lovely picnic on Parson's field and was delighted to find out that the ticket was valid for a year. We will definitely be back!

User

Visited today with my 11 year old daughter and 10 year old son. At the till they made sure I paid the cheapest price for entry. Happy that our ticket gains us free entry for the next year. Mark who was on the door of the parsonage was really friendly and chatted with my son. The kids got their own guides which my son read and learned lots of facts as we were going round. Judith who was speaking about the portrait was fantastic with my son who was asking lots of questions. She was really friendly and very informative. She definitely knew her stuff! Considering it was busy we didn’t have to rush round - we could take our own time. Will definitely be visiting again!!

Very atmospheric . Interesting chat with staff about the sisters which has prompted me to re visit to walk invisible ..have visited twice now and enjoyed it both times

User

This was a pilgrimage for me however I was amazed at how much my husband and son enjoyed our visit. The tour guides were lovely and made things come alive for us.

One ticked off my bucket list , however I will definately return. Would strongly recommend to readers and non readers alike.

This is a place I have wanted to visit since the age of 18 when I studied Wuthering Heights for A level English. I attended with the Codnor Book Club and we were given a talk the Bronte family and what we would be seeing in the museum. Our visit coincided with the display of the original painting of the sisters on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. It was great to see this. We were made welcome and our questions were answered. A memorable visit. Thank you.

User

The museum is very interesting and there are lots of artefacts and interesting memorabilia to see. The modern slant on the Foundlings was a surprisingly moving video. Initially I thought the entrance fee was too high but as it lasts for a year its really good value.

User

Many times we have been back to visit, it’s very atmospheric at the parsonage, a link with the past that brings you closer to the bronte’s, just like howorth itself, will return next year, thanks to all concerned for a wonderful Emily weekend bless her.

I've visited the Parsonage Museum a few times and never tire of it. The staff are so friendly and always happy to answer any questions. I was thrilled to see the finished Wuthering Heights manuscript , which I wrote a line in last summer. And also to see the original pillar portrait which is on loan there. Can't wait to visit again soon

I was visiting the Steam Gala on the 9th of March and after having lunch in the village, I thought i'd have a look around the parsonage. I had visited the house a few years back, but wanted to have another walk around to see all the rooms again.

After paying for my ticket and entering the house I was greeted by a male and female staff member who (after I visited the dining room) I began having a really interesting conversation with, and piqued my interest in the life of the Bronte family during that era. We also had a interesting conversation about the books the girls had written which inspired me to read Jane Eyre at some point (as I have only seen the film). After looking at the well preserved rooms and the interesting objects the trust had uncovered and collected over time, and clothes the family wore, I started talking to a lovely staff member upstairs who told me about the To Walk Invisible recreation of Branwell's room using the props from the miniseries. To end my trip before I returned to the railway gala, I started having a conversation with the female receptionist who was really interested in hearing about my university work and why I found the parsonage so inspiring.

Overall a really lovely visit. I couldn't praise the friendly staff enough who were all very knowledgeable about the Bronte family. Also, on hearing I wanted to go to the 1940's event in the next few months, one female member pointed out where the biggest car park was in the village because the smaller ones get busy, which was lovely of her.

A recommended visit if you are in the area.

I visited the parsonage for the first time yesterday. It gave a fantastic insight into what life was like 200yrs ago. They weren't a poor family by any means but I found it interesting learning about Patrick Brontë and what he did for the poor in his parish and how he believed in educating his daughters. He was a very forward thinking man who created a school for the poor. I really felt like I had stepped back in time 200yrs when visiting the authentic rooms and seeing the artifacts.

User

I love this very special place. The staff are knowledgeable and very helpful. Last year was a celebration of Branwell Bronte. This year Emily's bicentenary is celebrated beautifully. I love the dedicated exhibition and to see one of her gowns and chemise was lovely. The manuscript written, sentence by sentence, over the last year by visitors is a wonderful achievement and I think that Emily would be proud.

Hello! My two daughters and I were happily in the UK in May (from NEW England) and I visited the Bronte Parsonage Museum on the 4th. It was terrific! A gentleman on your staff talked with me and showed me Anne's book The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I bought it and Agnes Grey. Enjoyed them greatly! Those three sisters - amazing writers! I'm definitely wanting to visit again! Thank you!

Fabulous, historic, atmospheric, romantic, informative, knowledgeable staff and worth every penny.

I regularly visit Haworth but my husband was working at the parsonage so I was able to indulge my passion for the Brontë story.

User

A very friendly welcome from your delightful young staff. Living in the village, I wanted to show off one of our treasures to my niece from Northumberland. She had asked if I would take her and I felt very proud to do so, especially as it was the day after the visit by the Duchess of Cornwall. It was very atmospheric and took us back two hundred years to see where the Brontë’s spent their day to day lives. To stand in the rooms where the novels were planned and written and where Emily, Charlotte and Branwell died, was very moving. Thank you, all.
