About Clifford'S Tower

Clifford's Tower

Clifford'S Tower Description

It’s the stunning view you get of the historic city of York that makes Clifford’s Tower one of the most popular attractions in Yorkshire.

Set on a tall mound in the heart of Old York, this imposing tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror.
There’s plenty to discover here. In its time, the tower has served as a prison and a royal mint, as well as the place where Henry VIII had the bodies of his of his enemies put on public display. To complete your family day out in York, why not take the guided tour of the nearby York Cold War Bunker.

Happy Yorkshire Day! Make sure you take the Declaration of Integrity, to establish your loyalty to 'God's Own Country' 🌞☕
Did you know one of the reasons for the date, is because it's also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, had campaigned?

User

No matter the weather, we're open every day of the Summer Holidays from 10-6, so why not pop up to say hello?

The long Summer days are nice after the cold Winter, but sometimes we can't help but wish the sun would set a little earlier, if only so we could have this view more! 😍

User

Clifford's Tower has welcomed some new residents! We have nesting pigeons who have wisely used our spiral stairs as their home for now - it wouldn't do them any good to get accidentally trapped in the Chapel! 🐣🐦🐥

User

It's the start of the Summer Holidays! Clifford's Tower is open every day from 10am to 6pm, and what better way to tire the kids out than racing them up 55 steps? 🏰🤫

On this day in 1537, Robert Aske was hung from chains on a scaffold which had been erected outside Clifford's Tower. He headed the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, which led to his execution by order of Henry VIII.

User

User

Very lovely place, beautiful view I've always wanted to visit York it was my first time there with my friends and we love it,all the beautiful buildings, shambles is lovely too and we are planning to go and visit again,York is well recommended to me and no regrets good choice lovely hotel room too...

User

You wouldn't need more than half an hour here and it doesn't justify the entry fee unless you are concessions. Good views of York from the top though.

User

Well it is easy to get to and find parking, but if you are looking for a large castle you will not find it. All that is left it Clifford's Tower. The tower with the best over look and only like one floor high. If you want to know what happened to the rest of the castle you can visit or just look it up.

User

We are English Heritage members so knew what to expect when visited yesterday. We enjoyed the tower and the views and found all the staff very helpful and friendly. This is not a large place which won't take long to visit but is worth it.

User

Very nice and preserved fort. A bit difficult to climb the steps to reach the entrance, 54 steps, but the view of the city is great. A piece of the city's history. Worth for the money spent.

User

It is an interesting place to visit and the views of York are great on a clear and sunny day. The price is reasonable for ruined castle and there are many steep stairs to climb up to the castle/tower and inside the tower. The model of how the tower used to be is well made and informative.

User

Great price, breathtaking views, friendly staff, easy to find and park.

If only I hadn't turned into a wuss when I got to the top! Suddenly the barriers appeared far too short for someone of my height (6') and there were deathly lumps of stone that were desperate to trip me up! I walked around the top once (mainly looking at my feet) and got down......legs of jelly!

Not for wusses like me!

User

Beautiful view! It's a small tower and I spent not more than 15 minutes but it offers a nice view of the city. The stairs that lead to the top are narrow and steep so that was kinda scary but fun

User

This place should have a steel pole erected in the middle of it with some tasty looking pole dancers swinging around on it. At least that would be worth throwing your money away on for all of 5 minutes of viewing!

User

The tower is rich in history and worth a visit, the views from the top were amazing but the entry fee was ridiculous, £5 and we were done in less than 15 mins, definitely not worth it

User

The tower is rich in history and worth a visit, the view from the top is great. Would encourage membership as this is a small site and there are much better very close.

User

It has a nice view of the city but the price is too high for what It has to offer, it´s definitely worth it to see this tower from the outside but paying for it might not be so rewarding as expected.

User

£5 still to much, ok rich in history but it's hollow with genuinely nothing to see other than a gift shop to take more money from you,

On the other hand it needs money to be maintained but not really any positives on this one apart it has the looks on top of that mound.

User

No free car park for members, the one next door is very expensive on the plus side you can use ringo if you don't have change not the best castle in Yorkshire by far. Only spent half an hour there, would've been disappointed if I had to pay the entrance fee for 5 people and the guide book is £3.50!!!. It's only worth a visit if you are planning on tagging it with other activities in York 😔

User

I have given it 2 stars coz basically this place should be free....NO price board at the bottom of all them steps so you have to go right up to decide if you wanna pay the £10 entry fee....there is also no signage to warn people how high and quite narrow it is at the top...I imagine some people have struggled once they are halfway up but it's all one way so you have to keep going....great views of York but should be free

User

This should have been an interesting visit after having just spent 3hours in the York Castle Museum. However it was not. You have to climb a very steep flight of steps to get to the entrance and funnily enough there is no signage or information at the bottom of these to let you know what is on offer. £10 later my husband and I were thoroughly ripped off by an uninspiring ruin that took 5 minutes to walk round. Some views from the top of the wall, but that was it. My advice, admire from the bottom and read about its history elsewhere.

User

Not impressed with the price for what you get and the car park next to it was absolutely disgraceful (£2.50 per hour). It ended up costing us £19 which completely infuriated me as the car park is in a disgusting state. There should be a set all day price of maybe £10 for example. It was a good job that the centre of York was absolutely stunning. I would give York city centre a 5 star but the Clifford tower and car park a definite 1 star. Will not be in a rush to go to them two places again.

User

I believe the entry fee is too high, considering this monument is not particularly big and doesn't take very long to look around. However the usual information boards inside are very informative and interesting. Some additional railings would have been welcome and staircases could be made safer

User

First of all, I want to say this score is not for the view there which my friend and me even didn’t see. When we arrived at the castle, we didn’t know that there was a path upwards. So we risked the danger of slipping down the hill from the other side of the path to climb on. When we hanged around on the hill, we saw some children on it too. But when we saw the gate, we didn’t have time to realize what was happening but being yelled by the guard at the gate today. He was so rude and mad that he told us to “ go downstairs “ with a very loud sound again and again which made us really embarrassed and confused. You can’t imagine how tragedy it was. That was a really terrible experience because we went there to study a different time and culture but couldn’t even enter without realizing what was happening!! I must say that we apologize for not doing enough research before climbing the hill. Anyway, hope someone can see this and tell that man to be polite to people please.
