Elsham Gardens And Country Park Description

Elsham Hall dates back to the 1760s and was acquired by the Elwes Family in 1931 from King's College Cambridge having previously belonged to the Astley Corbett family. In 1939 the Hall was requisitioned as an Anti-Aircraft H. Q. during the Second World War but was left badly damaged necessitating the demolition of two of the wings. The present house along with a 19th Century orangery in the grounds is Grade II* listed and a private family home (the Hall is not open to the public).

The Park and Gardens were opened as a Country Park in 1970 by Captain and Mrs Elwes "to promote enjoyment of the countryside and wildlife and an appreciation of the arts and rural crafts". The gardens include a large medieval carp lake and stew pond and a 19th century coach house and stables which are also Grade II listed.

🦉 Twit-twooo ..... look at what we found today ... a sick and poorly owl sat on the grass. Thanks to a lovely local owl rescue lady we had the poorly owl winging itself to the vests in no time 🦉

What a lovely place this is. Lots to do and see. Loved seeing the lambs. Would highly recommend this place.

We visited yesterday and thought it was all lovely.I am puzzled at other reviews saying there is a lack of animals because we saw sheep, goats(one of which was very friendly!),donkeys, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds in aviaries and around the beautiful lakes plus the peacocks and also the fish of course. All very well kept.neat and tidy.We had no children with us but the adventure park looked good and the picnic areas are very pretty so will have to bring the grandchildren next time. The tea room and outside eating area was good with very fairly priced food and drink and a lovely relaxing environment.Staff were pleasant and happy which is always a bonus!

User

This is a very special place I never get tired of coming here, last time was to see the lambs. The park is beautiful and well set out with small animals and birds, lovely flowers and a river , were you can feed huge carp, tearoom and a small museum, go watch the birds in the bird hide, lots of things for children to do, well worth a visit...and does not cost mega bucks to get in. Plenty of car parking space and a gift shop.

This is a gem of a place....beautiful gardens, lakes, and something to delight the eye at every turn! There is a wonderful sense of being welcomed as you walk around the gardens, and after a stressful week, the calm, beauty and sense of peace here is a real pick me up. Highly recommend.

User

Lovely place, good value for money too. Plenty to do, worth another visit soon

Had a fantastic day out here on my first visit (with partner and teenage nephew), we all have an interest in photography and the gardens, art and animals provided plenty of opportunities to use our cameras. We were provided with a map which was very helpful. I believe we spent around 3 hours here and I felt it was well worth the entrance fee, we didn't eat here except a cheeky ice cream each, which we enjoyed in the courtyard and were entertained by a wandering peacock. Will definitely be visiting again x

User

Gorgeous walk around the grounds today , beautifully tended gardens, stunning scenery and the Alpacas , Rabbits and guinea pigs were a definite hit with the children... would highly recommend a visit here xx

User

Fabulous day out with the family, always plenty to do and lots of places to sit and relax to take in the fantastic scenery

User

Beautiful gardens, lovely lake full of Carp to feed and ducks. A children's farm with various species of animal, woodland walks, butterfly trail and cafe. They also hold weddings there too. Well worth a visit!

User

Beautiful day had even in a downpour, plenary to see and do, few more animals and it would be a full day out birds of prey maybe? Lol but in all honesty we had a lovely day and worth the money

User

The gardens are just beautiful and the wildlife too. It was our first visit and the weather was great for us too! It was like Alice in Wonderland for our two young daughters. Definitely worth a visit.

What seriously let's it down is the cafe, it was what we would describe as a normal day, ie: not too busy... We found a table straight away. We only ordered two sandwiches for adults and two children's sandwich bags. We waited 40mins for our food and were offered free drinks for the wait, however we had asked for at least the children's bags to be given to our girls but they said that wasn't possible?. Once the food arrived the children's sandwiches were stuffed with cheese (far too much they couldn't eat it) yet the adults cheese sandwich had less than a sprinkle, it was as if they had ran out, then to top it off we found a hair in our sandwich, we took it back and the girl who makes the food said she can't tie her hair back properly!! We were offered another sandwich but did not want to wait another 40mins! So we politely declined! The staff in the cafe are extremely slow and don't seem to have any idea of how to run a cafe! Albeit with a very small menu of sandwiches and panini's. I appreciate it is freshly made but of one person is struggling then someone else should help.

We were very disappointed at the end of what was a fantastic day.

Will return however, will be armed with a picnic in future! Please please sort the cafe out! It really lets you down.

Many thanks.

My daughter, young grandsons and myself enjoyed a visit yesterday. The snowdrops were amazing and although it was still February, it felt like Spring with the willow catkins & aconites in flower and other bulbs coming through. My grandsons enjoyed the play area and looking at the goats, bunnies, ducks and the birds in the aviary. We just wished there had been some hot meals on offer in the tearoom, other than just paninis or soup.

User

Good day out for all the family but take my advice ... take a packed lunch... service is poor ... long wait for food.Great otherwise.

User

Always a lovely place to visit, lots to see and the kids enjoy the play area after feeding the animals and fish. Nice gardens too.

User

A lovely place, great woodland walk and animals to see and some great photo opportunities if you take your camera.

User

Elsham hall gardens are a lovely day out but for the 3rd time since opening this season we have had terrible service in the Cafe!

Wrong order & 50 minute wait for sandwiches only - you seriously need to employ more staff & get organised with service as this spoils a really great day out.

User

Elsham gardens are absolutely stunning. Me and my friend had a lovely walk and i can completely understand why people would want to get married here. However, we had two 4yo and a 2yo and they werent overly impressed. They loved the park and the big fish but they were far too exhausted from wandering around looking for "animals". I dont know if it was my assumption but after reading reviews online and seeing the "things to do in half term" in the telegraph, me, my friend and the children expected to see more than a couple of peacocks and a few birds. As stated before, absolutely beautiful place but think i'll wait until the kids can appreciate it more and we can make a day of it instead of the children giving up after less than two hours. Thank you 😊 x

User

this place lovely as the views are hasn't changed since we last visited 6 years ago and if i'm honest it wasn't as nice. The pathways are lined with nettles, the school house had pens (mostly blunt pencils) but no paper so the kids were left disappointed, toilets leaking with no toilet roll, the entertainer as advertised was nowhere to be seen, rubbish all over, no sanitiser considering you have lots of animals - the staff members in the shop looked fed up and didn't speak a word even when we was being served :/ I think this place is well over-due a refurb - the only bit that was enjoyable was the playground area

User

Very tired. Toilets are particularly appalling and unhygienic which isn’t great when you have kids. At least the sun was shining.
