I've had a couple of enquiries about block bookings, which are a great idea if you want regular appointments to help with recurrent issues, or if you're including Sports Therapy as part of your event preparations.
Here's the deal. Pay for 5 sessions up front, get an extra session free.
Β£100 buys 6 x 30 minutes... Β£150 buys 6 x 60 minutes
Any referral discounts you earn along the way can be applied to future single bookings.
πŸ“† All appointments paid for in this way can be booked "as and when", but must be arranged within a year of the first session.
❌ Refunds are not available for unused sessions after this time period.

πŸŽ‰ Happy New Year everybody!
As always, the new year brings resolutions and grand plans, often involving health and fitness.
Remember - if you want to make a long-lasting change, consistency beats intensity every single time.
... Make sensible food choices. Start with an enjoyable, manageable amount of exercise. If you're returning to exercise after a long lay-off, do less than you think you should. Trust me on this.
Fad diets and Olympic training programmes will not get you where you want to be. They will get you hurt and make you feel guilty when they prove impossible to maintain. Who wants that for a whole year?!

Received this message today from a patient of mine who competes in Strongman. His successful rehab was down to his own hard work and dedication. On the way to finishing second overall, he came joint first in the Log Lift event, and I'll share the video as soon as I figure out how!
"Hi Gareth, I would like to thank you for your professional help in rehabilitating my left shoulder. I comped in Wigan yesterday and the shoulder held up marvellously, I came in 2nd and missed out on top spot by a point. Feeling sore all over today πŸ˜‚once again many thanks."

This is incredible strength and control. To the many patients with knee problems that I have prescribed single leg balances, squats and hops - here's some inspiration! Also a great example of the similarities between rehabilitation, risk reduction and strength and conditioning in sport.

User

This is a post for anyone taking part in the Hull 10K or Hull Half-Marathon on the 10th of June.
I will be providing discounted appointments on bookings from 21st of May until 17th of June (inclusive). Just provide evidence of your race entry to be eligible for Β£5 off a 30 minute session, or Β£10 off an hour session.

The Lancet is one of the world's most well-known and respected medical journals. The BBC has written up a useful, short summary of their recent publication on back pain. Give it a read!
Personally for me, it was heartening to see this information being spread so widely by the BBC.
A few words on my approach to back pain:
... 🚨 Rule out warning signs for more serious issues (several of these are listed in the article)
πŸ’‘ Determine which movements, positions and behaviours aggravate the patient's pain, and which movements, positions and behaviours ease the pain. Discuss other lifestyle factors relating to back pain.
πŸ‘ Reassurance. Our spines, and the connective tissues around them, are strong and robust. The vast majority of mechanical back pain is caused by small sprains which heal quickly, similar to rolling an ankle or bending a finger back. Just as we recover from these minor injuries, we can recover from back injuries.
πŸ‘ Where appropriate, I sometimes use manual therapy. Often patients with back pain feel limited in their movements by increased muscle activity (i.e. something feels tight when they move, so they stop moving!) and manual therapy can help to temporarily reduce feelings of pain, tightness and immobility, allowing us to move on to the most important aspect of back pain improvement. In my view, this plays a similar role to drug therapies prescribed by GPs - reduce pain to enable movement.
πŸ’ͺβ›³πŸŽΎπŸƒπŸŠ Advice on movement. Bed rest has been shown to be ineffective for improving back pain in the long term. Movement, in many different forms, is vastly superior. The strategies, exercises or modifications we make here are highly individual, and agreed with the patient.

Quick tip: when swinging a kettlebell, think
"High at the bottom, low at the top"
As it passes between your legs, the handle should be between your thighs, above your knees - the higher the better . ... On the way up, it should rise only as high as momentum carries it, somewhere between the hips and shoulder depending on the weight of the kettlebell and speed of the movement. Performing a shoulder raise to bring the kettlebell overhead is completely unnecessary for achieving the goal of this exercise - explosive hip extension.
Performing swings in this way keeps the weight closer to your own centre of mass, and allows the main stress to be applied to the hamstrings and glutes, rather than the lower back.

I've been getting fortnightly massages for a long time now and the difference in how my body feels is crazy, the amount of niggling injuries I get has drastically reduced. If it's not part of your overall training program you really are missing out. Don't wait for an injury to start seeing him.

User

Has helped me overcome several injuries relating to my physical disability quicker than other therapists in the past and at my convenience (fitting around work, uni and my training) and even though we are friends always incredibly professional.
